The best of the worst Lego Ideas

Ladies and gentlemen; proof positive you could literally slap a brick on a plate and have it accepted by ideas:

There is a brick in a military-green color that makes me thing to the use of non-Lego parts. The base plate also does not seem to have "Lego" on the studs... (though that it is difficult to see)

That is definitely a Tyco plate, at least I think they are the only ones who made plates in half-brick thickness. Based on the apparent age of the bricks, that olive green brick is probably also Tyco.

Any time there is something funny in the description that's a warning sign that the project is a troll. Ther are a few others:

  • Any description that gets too candid into the motivation of the creator is suspect, as someone who was really excited about positing a project likely wouldn't also judge themselves while setting it up.
  • Any description/updates with humor that is secondary to the concept of the project (Mostly any statements made by the creator that make them seem incapable to some degree) is usually not serious.

There might be others, too.

Are you serious? A sense of humor indicates trolling to you?

A sense of humor is a wonderful thing, and a sense of humor that can transcend speech and be interpreted through non-vocalized literature is an incredibly wonderful thing.

I don't understand your three points up there at all.

Here are some. There are a lot more decent projects than I thought. Some of these might be troll projects, but it's hard to tell.

"Shadow Car" (Simple build) :

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/155905

"Cellphone/Tablet Holder" (Simple build, poor color layout):

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/155635

"Micro Buggy" (Simple build, possibly troll project):

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/155051

"Indiana Jones:The Temple Of Doom Board Game" (Simple build, poor color layout, likely a troll project):

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/154689

"Futuristic Alligator" (Simple build, possibly troll project):

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/154605

"Fisher Man And His Boat" (Simple build):

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/154539

For most troll projects the creator is likely posting it to make fun of something, usually LEGO Ideas related.

Most projects on LEGO Ideas that are actually bad tend not to be as exciting to make fun of as the ones that people create specifically as jokes.

What I find intriguing is that all those projects have comments and likes from exactly the same folks - even the comments are mostly the same. Are these folks just going around liking every submission?

@Nathan734, The Tower of Mordor, Barad-Dur, has not ever been a LEGO set. You're thinking of Orthanc.

I don't think you know what humor is or what trolling is. I think you are only on this thread to actively belittle other's creations, and are attempting to make yourself feel better by convincing yourself they're joke projects that are meant to be laughed at. They are not. Somebody spent time and effort to make an IDEA. It may not be the best creation, in fact it may be quite sub-par, but it is the Idea.

I'm personally done talking about this, but you're welcome to respond and have the "last word", I just won't reply. In fact, I'll try to never visit this thread again. It upsets me.

And what is the objective of that? Do they get some sort of a reward for commenting?

I think there's some kind of clutch power points system you get where if you comment, submit a model, support a model, add someone as your friend etc. You get certain amounts of clutch power. I don't know what it does, there is a leader board for it though.

^ and it's like that thing where people go around Youtube etc "subscribe to my channel". If I (no, not me) support & comment on everyone else's stuff, then it'll come back around and I'll get to 10000 with this substandard project of mine

This one is wierd. The builder claims this car is inspired by the BMW I8, but it looks like a reproduction of the Slammer Raptor Drome Racers set.

Ideas project:

Slammer Raptor set:

How did that even get approved?

Surprise surprise, the render isn't his either.

That's what I want to know.  Their Moderators need to do a better job.

I had that set as a kid. My gosh, people blatantly ripping of Lego's own designs!

I wanted to reply to this article, since I totally agree, and just saw some hilariously bad set ideas today

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/dc28ade5-a80d-4ae1-b048-36cbd23315fb

First up, this small spaceship a person made, and while not exactly "set worthy" I will give the builder credit for sticking to one color, and actually making a non-digital build.

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/f57f334b-ebfa-46a1-8c06-79a7c3eca17e

An electronics store would work nicely in a Lego city setting, but whoever built this clearly did it in five minutes, also are there only TWO iMacs inside there?

https://ideas.lego.com/projects/b7537a67-527e-4c58-a810-5e5cb3a4f2f4

The quality of the mechs that get uploaded to Lego Ideas is astonishing. This "Cyklop Stormwalker" supposedly from a book series (as the creator writes "If you read it then you know what I'm talking about."), has non-posable legs, non-firing weapons, and a cockpit that has "a bunch of chairs"

OK, I'm happy to see that kids are coming up with creative ideas for Lego sets, but for goodness sake, was this kid even trying? This build was literally thrown together in less than seven minutes, and aside from an Exo Force version of the farmer, I don't see Shaun, Gym Puppy, or any other characters from Shaun the Sheep!

What are you talking about? Shaun and 'a chicken' are displayed in the fifth photo! I also like the second comment in the list, "Nice work! It is abstract."

To be fair, it's a good build for someone with an imagination. However, it's not the point of LEGO Ideas; if you want to share your models, there are various galleries across the LEGO website to do so (I believe). I also appreciate that the theme would make a good, displayable LEGO set, but it's been done (and very well too!). TLG even replied to that one, saying that another toy company owns the license so producing sets is not possible (Hence it has been 'archived', and doesn't show up on searches.) What happened to a bit of market research?

And of course, why was it allowed through in the first place? If LEGO picked up on the older project as being 'invalid' due to licensing issues, and archived it mid-campaign, why haven't all other, newer projects on the same theme been archived too? Has the license become available since then? Seems unlikely.

I would so love one of these, like that Apple store, reach 10k as the result of internet trolling. How hasn't this happened yet?

Wasn't the Cuusoo/Ideas Minecraft original proposal very basic? For some projects it is more the idea than how it is made

Well, it's called LEGO Ideas for a reason.

Yeah, it's not like there had already been 12 other Apple store projects on Ideas (& none of them as shitty as this one).

And proof that it's not just about the idea, they got votes ranging from 200 to 10k. Yes, one reached 10k.

But as much as I would love to say that the build matters, sadly it's more about pimping the idea than the build or the idea itself.
..which is why I'm really wondering how Ideas hasn't gotten its Bricky McBrickFace time yet.

What I really hate about Ideas, is licensed themes are constantly being approved while non-licensed ideas, like the ones by JK brickworks and Pete Reid, get shoved under the rug.
