"And the extract of rat liver is also working as a possible replacement for the Oleon wine! Both produce fine phlogiston when burning" "And the Royal Society has invited me to Arlinsport. This is so exciting. I need to build something bigger out of this!" And so he created the first Eslandolean airship, the "Spirit of Eslandola", which spent some time hovering above his house. (The cat was needed for balance purposes) In fact, it was just hovering and Alberto realized that he just could not tell the thing where to go. He was completely depending on the winds. No way he could make it to Arlinsport with the "Spirit of Eslandola". He would have to take a (normal) ship. "How shall I name my creation?" he pondered. It is lifted by two cotton balls and it hovers above the ground. "I shall name this invention a Ballhover" He had also added a new element (a Phlogiston-Catcher) to ensure that none of the created phlogiston would be missed. After having parked the ballhover, Alberto returned to his basement laboratory to complete his letter to the Royal Society. Alberto would debate with the monkey later to find ideas how to make a ballhover dirigible. C&C welcome. (and the pictures are much larger on flickr) Builder's comments: As for the photography, the reflections on these hemispheres are terrible... And the whole thing is utterly fragile and broke down and crashed several times .... (for those who want to try for themselves). Some Medicine/Philosophy (skull), Alchemy/Metallurgy (gold crystal) , Nature (frog), vials, potions and so on. The lamps (if they are lamps and not glasses with formaldehyde) on the wall are effective. I wish the cabinet was at least a little bit taller, if only to fit a few small drawers underneath the books. IC: Your endeavors in getting things to lift of the ground are amusing, although I see no practical use for it. It surely can not lift ships that are too large to carry, I presume. Could this invention of yours be used for harvesting very tall trees? As it gains weight she comes back down again, if I understand your concept? Science is a means of gaining insight into the world we live in - in the first place. But rest assured, I already have some ideas... You may have heard that Thaddeus Lupus has recently carried out similar experiments and has conducted a manned flight, sadly ending in the sea but thankfully without casualties. Thanks to the generous support of Lady Norrington, Mr Janszen and myself have been continuing our own experiments on the beach here at Port Raleigh. We believe that Major Howard may have devised a most ingenious solution to the problem of steering the ballhover, which we are now trialling. In fact we rather prefer the term 'Phlogisphere' suggested by Thaddeus Lupus. I look forward to hearing more developments on this fascinating project as your experiments continue, and I will keep you informed of my own work. What you tell me about Mr. Lupus is fascinating news indeed. I am surprised to hear that their machinery was able to reach the sea. So far, my Ballhover has just been hovering (until all of the Oleon wine had been burnt. Then the Ballhover landed.) Why would somebody call this a "Phlogisphere"? 'tis such a modern word. Prithee, may I urge you to kindly go through the extra trouble of adhering to the term "Ballhover"? Ballhover or not ballhover, that is the question. 'tis not nobler in the mind to drag a different term into existence. In any case - good luck for your work!
