Yet Another Death Star Room

Recommended Posts

Updated pictures for lots of added details.  The room is a lot more polished and finalized now.

Greetings,

After months of designing, planning, building... thwarting rebel attacks (girl friend), redesigning, etc... my Death Star room has finally become operational. Much of the design is based on Emperor Chills' original masterpiece, which if you aren't familiar with, can be found here. After seeing his I was determined to make my own version, and Chills was glad to help me design it. I can't overstate how helpful he was, and just how awesome his original is. Here is my version!

My primary goal was two fold: to make a room to display my UCS collection, and to serve as a home theater where I could enjoy all aspects of Star wars. Here it is from the back of the room.

The room measures roughly 12x18, which isn't huge, so I had to make every inch count. I spent nearly as much time designing as I did building to make it all work.

There are several sources of lighting: the Death Star lights provide a nice eerie glow and each side can be operated independently. There are also two banks of LED ceiling lights that are dimmable.

The light panels I custom made and cut by hand. Chills later pointed out that I foolishly overlooked the fact that I could have used a hole cut saw. Oh well :)

The built in cabinetry have LED lights that illuminate nicely and are dimmable.  You can see the hanger control station in the back where the electronics are housed. Where is TK421??

The wall elements/panels I cut from 1/2 MDF and I did my best to make them to scale.  I've added a considerable number of wall elements to fill in the entirety of the room.

I used charcoal colored acoustic foam for the vent-like inserts on the wall panels and framed them.

I won't go into great detail on the audio side of things since this is a Lego forum, but if you're curious I used Martin Logan speakers.

A few more pictures on Flickr.

The room is pretty much finished now.  I imagine I'll continue to add and change minor "greebles" as one would a Falcon, but I'm happy with it now overall.  The only problem being, at the rate people continue to build amazing things space is becoming an issue and MOCs are going to be facing some stiff competition for shelf space :)

All you need is all seven Episodes on Blu Ray; a Clone Wars complete box set, and a gaming console of your choice full of Star Wars games.

And a copy of Spaceballs... Then this battle station will be fully operational!

Holy Moses, that looks incredible. How long was did this project take you?

About four months. Sometimes with little activity, sometimes with tons. The panels and wall elements took the longest :)

Thank you! I even enjoy Attack of the Clones now!

Great job!

You can do it :) The hardest part is just figuring out the measurements and drawing them. Even without lighting the white acrylic still looks good

Your efforts have produced a very impressive man-cave!

Just out of curiosity: how long are the long 'slots' in the light panels, and what diameter of hole saw should be used to recreate them?

I'll have to upload the OT 'Despecialised' editions to enjoy the original theatrical films in blu ray quality for you!

The room looks fantastic!

The cut outs are 3 inches wide, with 2 inches in between. The long slots are 16 inches.

Very nice! I wish I had all those UCS sets.

Han always shoots first in this establishment ;)

Most impressive. I think the time and hard work paid off, this room looks super polished, and I commend you on the quality of your work. It is definitely a worthy space to display those UCS sets.

Absolutely fantastic... As I build my first home cinema myself some years ago I could certainly appreciate all the details you put into this... Looks really great! What kind of audio/video equipment are you using?

Twin SVS subs and Martin Logan mains, center and surrounds. The current A/V is an Integra from back in 2008, but I will be upgrading to an Anthem MRX 710 at some point, or possibly a Marantz SR7009 since they're practically giving them away. The screen is a Carada.
