This has been up on Flickr for a few weeks now but I thought I'd share it here anyway, telling those interested a bit more about the build.

The T-70 X-Wing is one of my favorite vehicles from The Force Awakens and even of the whole Star Wars universe. As the LEGO set was no more than your average stud shooting playset I quickly decided to build my own version of the starfighter.

Originally I didn't really like Poe Dameron's repainted version very much but since I didn't have that many grey parts available for experimenting due to my Millennium Falcon project I still went with this colour scheme for the first design and really grew to like it.

For the build design I wanted to borrow a few small elements from Mike Psiaki's fantastic T-65 X-Wing and combine them with my own style and that of the newer design for the fighter itself.

I really wanted to make sure that the fighter wasn't just in scale with minifigs but also incorporated all the important features and details of the real thing. This meant that the wings had to open and close smoothly and the landing gear had to fold into the hull nicely in order to not disturb the overall sleekness of the ship.

Black One T-70 X-Wing (1) by Kit Bricksto, on Flickr

Once I had finished the Black Leader version of the X-Wing I realized that it didn't take that many special parts to complete it and that I'd probably manage to build a blue and grey one too. Although I had to change some parts on this version I still think that the second one looks equally good.

This isn't the greatest picture of the grey X-Wing, sorry. Look at it more as a teaser..

Anyway, I'd love to hear your opinions on my interpretation of the T-70! Constructive criticism is always very welcome, too.

Hey I like it very much! Even though the new X Wing is getting a lot of attention lately, your design is still very unique because of well shapef front slope of the nose/hull that closes up with the canopy.

Makes it maybe a bit too shubby, but I see the difficulty one can have in this scale with that (The version from Lego looks more sleek with the flat design, but its simply less accurate). The canopy itself looks a bit misplaced as well because it 4 stud long on the front end instead of 2 studs (so it would go smoothly into the tiled center slope).

Wings look very good too. Only thing I personally dont like as a design choice are those 1 x 2 Tiles with 1 center stud as part of the laser cannons.

But yeah, well done overall!

Good job Kit! I somewhat had the same feeling about poes colorscheme at first glance, now I definitely like it a lot. Regarding your models, the black wokrs perfectly to hide some 'studdyness' and gaps created by those wedge plates on the sides of the hull - these aspects disturb me a little on the grey version. Therefore I like your Poe's fighter much more on the whole. Anyway, I really like the shaping you did on it - excellently close to the original and or course way better than official model :)

I love this one! May be my favourite. although the cockpit piece does stand out a bit for being too wide at the end. Maybe you could consider a brickbuilt one.

Great design! I love the simplicity of the model. Great shape! I like the blue and gray version the most.

^ maybe you are? :D I don't know but it looks quite alright in comparison to e.g, your profile pic. Maybe it's a bit bulkier but the length seems alright.

Thank you, glad you like it! :) My model has the right proportions length-wise. The problem once again is the minifig. In order to fit a pilot the whole fuselage has to be a bit wider than it should be. That's what makes it seem a bit stubby.

Yes, indeed, well spotted. I was hesitant to post pictures of the grey version at first for those exact reasons. The whole nose area just worked a lot better on the black version as it eliminated almost all of the shadows.

I did consider it but it didn't really work out to look better than this one, so I stuck with it for the time being..

Nice, but am I the only one here who think that the nose is a little bit too short for a X-Wing?

You are not the only one but as krisandkris 12 said the length is accurate. I measured it and compared it with the measurements of the original and they are within a studs tolerance. However, my design is a bit too wide to fit a minifig inside and the whole nose should actually also slope upwards ever so slightly, which I ignored in order to preserve structural stability for the model.

I really like the size and shape of your fighter, but my only suggestion is to modify the cockpit area so the windshield lays horizontally, I know it wouldn't be as accurate but something looks odd because of it, however that is just my opinion, yet its an amazing build, keep them coming.

Thanks for your comment! However, I won't change the angle of the cockpit as it is such an important feature of the model and the playset shows us how bad it looks having the cockpit straight.

As many of you over on Flickr asked for instructions I have decided to release the LDD file. If you use the file to build your own X-Wing please be honest about it and don't present it as your own work. Thanks! :) Also, I'd love to see pictures of your X-Wings! Modifications are very welcome and I might have to steal the best ones.

So, here is the file: T-70 X-Wing wings seperate.lxf Have fun building! EDIT: As several people seem to have had problems opening the file I uploaded to EB but sending it via E-Mail seems to work, just send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the file as soon as I can. :)

Note: I split the model up into modules that I'd recommend building seperatly first as assembling the wings can be quite tricky and I found this to be the easiest way. If you have any further questions just ask me here and I will get to you as soon as possible.

(Obviously I wasn't able to incorporate the windshield part in it. There are also a few small parts missing from the guns as LDD deleted them every time I saved the file but you should be able to figure those out yourselves. :) )

Very nice! THE best T-70 MOC I've seen so far! Definitely gonna give this build a go! On Flickr, I saw your Falcon images, and I would love to see that one complete! Keep up the good work man!!

I like it! I'm not a super fan of X-Wings, they're cool but i've never been overly intrigued, but I do like yours a lot!

Glad you like it. Make sure to tag me if you post pictures of your version. I'd love to see it. :)

Also, I will hopefully complete the Falcon soon.

I wasn't really that obsessed with them either and I still don't excessively love the T-65 fighters from the OT but the new ones just appeal to me. Oh and thanks for your nice comment. Always nice to hear that someone who isn't too obsessed likes something purely as a build! :)

Oh buddy, this is amazing! I really like the T-70, and yours is definitely the best one I've seen, even better than the original set haha
thank you very much for this! I need to get to building one
Unfortunately .lxf file isn't working for me :/ LDD says unable to open file
Could you send a pdf or an imgur or something? I suck at reverse engineering and I'd really love to build one with bley and trans red instead of orange :P
Also, does the opening, closing mechanism work or was it cut out?

Thanks man!

I can't seem to find a way to upload the file with the new version of Eurobricks.. I uploaded it to the German forum "Imperium der Steine" too though.. Here's the link: http://www.imperiumdersteine.de/index.php?/topic/44611-black-leaders-t-70-x-wing/?p=770647

If that doesn't work either send me your email address via PM and I'll send it you that way..

That depends on what you mean by "work". The wings do fold obviously but I am using a Psiaki-inspired mechanism that connects two of the wings and you therefore only have to open the wings on one side and all four will open but there is no knob or gear to turn that snaps them open like in the playsets.

Loving it - thanks Kit, and thanks also for sharing the LDD file via another forum (I could not upload my LDD for my CW UCS Y-Wing, it seems limited on file extensions and also size).

Great job Kit!

I really want to try to build it for myself, but it seems that I can't open your file. Can you send me the LDD file?

Thanks!

Sure thing! Just send me your email adress via PM and I'll send you the file. I don't know what's wrong with the Eurobricks file sharing tool but you're not the first person who wasn't able to download the file.. I hope to find a way of fixing that issue for myself sometime soon.

I have found that you have to use an outside set like bricksafe to host files and then just link back here.

You need to have made ten posts, I believe, before you can PM.
