The Empire of Oleon: Sign-up and Discussion

Recommended Posts

DLL gave a great write up here. Every nation has trade, it is just geared a different way.

As for looking down on traders, historically this is exactly what happened at the end of the Medieval period, traders became wealthy enough to challenge the aristocracy, and eventually the kings find this out and start granting titles to merchants and the rich rather than the hereditary bloodlines. This, during the renaissance is sometimes referred to the new nationalism. It is one of the reasons why the major kings came to power, starting with John 1 of Portugal, who overthrew the limitations of the aristocracy by building a professional army with the money of the trading houses that backed him. Aragon and Castile somewhat followed suit, and eventually France. England's monarchy was able to build strength, but eventually checked by the Parliament, which of course, started as the aristocracy only. The "new nationalist" countries, with their stronger monarchs ended up dominating Europe, and still exist for the most part today.

Anyway, Olean could definitely be a few steps behind the other powers of the Peninsula -- their Aristocracy still holds a lot of power, and looks at the threat that a rich merchant may bring to their power, as they have seen it already happen in Eslandola.

Reserve officer Matthias

is a member of family of migrants. He came to Oleon when he was 14 years old. To that time the troups of orleon were recruiting new soldiers. Matthias´s Father took his chance to get shot of one eater of the family and enlisted his son. With no knowledge of the language and less about the culture Matthias started his basic training. The mates first didn´t like Matthias but he was a strong believer and godlyer than all other recruits, nevertheless he could show his skills in the battletraining and so he got the respect of his mates. After a few years he was appointed to be an officer for the Kingdom of Faith. Six more years later his time in the army was over. Of course he serves Orleon still as a reserve officer, ready to fight when the kingdoms want him to. In the meantime his mother and father dies and he is the owner of a little cottage and a little land to farm on. He actuell has no reason to leave his property and search for adventures. He thoungt about becoming a trader or have a farm far away on more fertile soil, but as long as the hayleft is save from the rats and the railings hold of the wild pics from his fields he will stay home.

Thank you so much! So does the character have to be part of the bluecoat army or no?

Absolutely not! You can be anything from a priest or missionary to a trader or adventurer to a humble bread baking colonist or an artisan, or an extravagant aristocrat, or even a pickpocket stowaway. Of course you can also be a member of Oleon's famous Navy, as many have already done. It's all up to you! :classic:

This is my sigfig. Her name is Elizabeth, and this is her story. Born to a farmer and his wife, she grew up in the country. She despised this, so she stole some money and ran away. Elizabeth found herself in the Empire of Oleon. Using her money, she stayed at Jeramiah's Tavern and Inn. Once she ran out money, he generously gave her a job. They fell in love. But Jeramiah grew ill. On his deathbed, he gave her everything he owned, including the inn. Elizabeth now operates Elizabeth's Tavern and Inn, which is now a thriving business. Many highranking bluecoats have stayed at her inn.

It doesn't show the picture I attached, would someone please help me?

I suggest getting a Flickr account (free, just make a free a Yahoo account for it) and uploading your image to Flickr and then deeplinking to the image. Euro bricks is not an image hosting website, so you'll need to upload it through an external source. A much less complicated process that doesn't involve making any new accounts is simply using "tinypic" to host the image.

You'll need the image to be medium to small sized. Flickr let's you choose your size, which is its biggest advantage. Medium for a square is about 500-500 pixels (or a bit bigger) tinypic just hosts pictures. It doesn't let you change the picture's size. You'd need to do that on your own computer before uploading it.

Once you've hosted the picture, you can take the picture's url and post it here, surrounded by the following code:

[img] [/img]

like so: [img] www.example.com [/img]

That will do it for you.

This is my fifth post.

Well, try to retry :)

But anyway, you should get a flickr account or a brickshelf account because attachments are very very very limited :)

Also a big welcome to you!

As Maxim wrote, do get one of those two accounts. And (hint) you can find many MANY great MOCs around there.

Ok guys (powers that be), I want to place my rather large city on the island of lebellan. I see two other cities already exist, I hope this won't cause any trouble for future game plans. If it does, please advise me. I am waiting for a approval before I proceed.

You will have to get an Oleon leader to confer for sure, but another city on the most populous island in the Sea of Storms should not be a problem.

Captain John Luke Bacard

Bacard is the captain of the Oleon vessel The Excalibur. He is a very respected member of the Oleon Navy. While he is very cunning in battle, Bacard's real talent lies in exploration. He is known as one of, if not THE, greatest explorer of his time.

Bacard quickly rose through the ranks of the Oleon Navy due to his skill and of course luck. He was the First Officer aboard a small exploration vessel that came under attack of pirates. The Captain of that ship was killed in the battle. Bacard assumed command of the ship, and due to his cunning and guile, managed to out Fox the pirates. When they were chasing them, Bacard led them over a reef that only his small vessel managed to barely make it over. The Pirate ship got stuck on the reef. While the pirates were scrambling to get their ship unstuck, Bacard turned his vessel around and fired! The Pirates were destroyed. This mastery of the seas, got Bacard promoted to Captain. The Oleon Navy has since been wanting to promote Bacard to the rank of Admiral, but Bacard has managed to avoid this promotion. He is happier exploring the seas, commanding his ship, than he would be commanding a fleet.

The Excalibur (smaller brig)

The Excalibur is not a large warship. It is meant more for exploration, than for war. It only has 2 guns, but behind the cunning of Captain Bacard, is not a ship to be taken lightly. The ship has an active crew of 6.

Good intro, Captain Pirate Man. The last pic of the ship looks like a perfect sunrise/sunset view. And do I spy some modified Castle Gatehouses at the front of the fort? That's a great set (I should know...I have a bunch of them) and a nice idea. Looking forward to seeing more.

Yes those are gatehouse raid sets, as a matter of fact 4 of them make up parts of the castle that pic was taken in front of.

I have nearly gotten approval from Oleon command to establish a new city in Lebellan. Which is where these pictures were taken. So look out for more pics and info reguarding that fort/castle and the city that surronds it. As well as the lovely characters that call that city home.

I would like to introduce my character, Erwin Clarke.

Erwin was not born in the Empire of Oleon, but in the far off lands of the middle kingdoms. Despite his family's tradition of becoming shoemakers, Erwin instead decided to become an independent merchant, trading in the warm seas to the north. Eventually he bought his own ship and sailed it as the Outsider. However, it was now that disaster struck. The Outsider was attacked by a Corlander merchant raider. The attack not only destroyed the ship and its valuable cargo, but also killed his best friend.

Erwin only survived by clinging to a plank blasted from the Outsider's prow. He was picked up by a Oleander vessel and decided to join their navy so that he could avenge his friend and bring the fight to Corlanders. His first post was at Eldorado Fortress, where he served under the famous Governor Broadside. His heroic actions during the Battle of Forbidden Island saw him promoted to the rank of Officer and given the command over a small ship.

He was assigned to escort merchant ships, a role in which he excelled due to his previous experience as a merchant himself. He seeks to further progress through the ranks of the Oleon navy, so that he can further punish Corrington.

Typically, trading is not a favorite Oleander pastime (I sort of get the impression that most Oleanders would look down on traders, as being "new rich" sort of; also because they belong to the working class, not the leisure class), but there can certainly be exceptions!

Perhaps they view the "merchant class" as parasites on society similar to the view of the Babylonians? As in....trade and bartering must occur, but use and manipulation of "market systems" and "speculation for profit" would be considered rude or dishonorable activities...

Allow me to introduce Captain Anthony Genaro, a loyal officer in the Oleon Navy.

23742252509_e0416dca29.jpg

Captain Antony Genaro by Capt. Genaro, on Flickr

The second son of a middle class merchant, Genaro spent most of his childhood at his father's shop where he would help his older brother and occasionally sneak away to watch ships in the city's bustling harbor. Since the eldest son stood to inherit the family's business, Genaro had no future in the family business. Thus, at the age of eight, Genaro's father placed him under the care of Captain Juan de San Martin of the Oleon Navy. Under Captain San Martin, Genaro was placed in a berth with fellow young gentlemen and began his career at sea. Genaro was rated Lieutenant at the age of 18 and served on several ships of the line. During Juniper War, then Lieutenant Genaro spent most of his time on ships of the line as they blockaded and besieged Corrington's ports. During one such siege, Genaro's ship strayed near a coastal battery which quickly open fired, causing massive damage and multiple fires to break out. With the ship's captain dead, Genaro took command and succeeded in saving the ship. His heroic action (plus intercession by San Martin, an admiral by this time) lead to Genaro's quick promotion to Captain.

Being a junior Captain, Genaro was put ashore when peace broke out. During his time ashore, he served as an aid to several officers in the admiralty, eventually gaining enough favor to be offered a ship. Young, bold, and adventurous, Genaro's future is as limitless as the horizon.
