Quick Glance
Life in Oleon centers around traditional values. Oleanders are generally pious people, loyal to their Monarch, and take pride in their vast cultural heritage. Owning land defines one’s standing in the social hierarchy, and the rural nobility - which you can be a part of - has ever since been regarded Oleon's elite.
Following her claim for superiority, Oleon today has the largest warships, fields a powerful army, and has already established a moderate colonial presence, which she is eager to expand.
Oleon accepts new members, especially craftsmen, artists, agriculturalists, seamen, and entrepreneurs of all kinds, as long as they are loyal to the Monarch.

A DETAILED LOOK at the EMPIRE OF OLEON

Leadership

King Philip I and Queen Beatrice (NPC)

Spoiler

Full Name and Title: Philip I, Roi d’Oleon et Guelph, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal et Militaire de l’Étoile d’Ardros, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal de Saint-Arltrees

The Royal Great Coat-of-Arms:

31444489511_550ca66701_o.png

After the sudden passing of his elder brother - the late King Stéphan II - Philip was crowned in April 616.
Whereas the late Monarch was a great admirer of the occult, driven by all things mythical, which allowed the Order of the Faith to spread its influence into almost every niche of Oleander society, Philip follows in the footsteps of his father Stéphan I. Noble and almost idealistic, with a broad education, and – growing up in the Royal Palaces of Granoleon – naturally provided with a passion for the arts, he now has to prove that he can prevail on the political stage as the absolute Monarch that he will need to be. With his beloved wife Queen Beatrice by his side he rules over the empire in a crucial time. He tasks himself with nothing less than challenging the mighty Order of the Faith, and reducing the influence of its destructive elements, especially that of the Clerics of Hades, to rebuild Oleon's reputation as the predominating cultural beacon it once was adored for.

Lord Chancellor Calida (NPC)

26322768332_cf96c3c081_z.jpg

Spoiler

Full Name and Title: Lucier Henri Calida, Duc de Courtia et Pair d’Oleon, Chancelier d’Oleon, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal et Militaire de l’Étoile d’Ardros, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal de Saint-Arltrees, Amiral

Coat-of-Arms:

30718671354_6e5cd12665_o.png

Lucier Henri Calida was born into the House of Courtia - already one of the most influential Oleander noble families - and he soon saw the potential the Faith offered him for his political ambitions. He rose to power as a clergyman, but his organizational talents were soon discovered by the Royal Court. He was appointed Adviser to the King, and excelled in various tasks, foremost the introduction of a naval focus to Oleon, and the consequent buildup of La Royale prior to the Juniper War.
Today he is not only Chancelier d'Oleon – the highest administrative position in Oleon – he is also Supreme High Priest of the Clerics of Zeus, making him de facto leader of the Order of the Faith, which has blossomed under his regime. Under King Stéphan II he controlled the High Council and was First Adviser to the King, answering only to him. And as the King shared his beliefs, his authority was unchallenged. Some even say Stéphan II was a mere puppet, and that Calida was Oleon's true regent.
Now, with Philip I as King, his universal authority might be challenged for the first time. Nobody can tell how Calida is likely to react to this, since his agenda remains unclear to everyone. He is feared by many, and often described as a devious schemer who will do anything to tighten the Order's grasp on Oleon. Others see in him a savior and believe him to be the only guarantor for upholding the Empire's domestic order.
One thing is for sure, though, he is more likely to prepare for a war with Corrington than to read mass in a temple.

Structure of State

Oleon is an absolute Monarchy. The King has always been the central authority, ruling over the land with a wise and strong hand since the days of King Arltrees.
Oleon is the King – and the King is Oleon.

26381834371_ba0d2b48a7_o.png

26425772006_7b476964f6_o.png

Wise Monarchs govern for the well-being of their loyal subjects, taking paternal care of them. That is the natural order of all things under the sun. So there is no need for 'representation', for 'parliaments' even, or other unsacred institutions in Oleon.
But wise Monarchs also listen to advice. That is the reason why the High Council supports the King in his rule, and advises him with expertise in all matters of state. The various branches of Oleon's administration then answer to the High Council and his chairman, the Lord Chancellor of Oleon, who traditionally is the first and most important adviser to His Majesty.

Members of the High Council

Pierre Lavalette Genaro, Duc de Vele et Pair d’Oleon, Intendant Général des Finances, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal de Saint-Arltrees

Pierre Lavalette Genaro is the current Duke of Vele - a booming coastal region East of Granoleon - and General Intendant of Finances at His Majesty’s Royal Court. Using his formidable fiscal talent and economic expertise, the Duke of Vele has consolidated the royal treasury, and reformed Oleon’s taxation system. By many, he is regarded as the Royal Court’s rising star. Some even go as far as saying Genaro’s influence on His Majesty has already surpassed that of Lord Chancellor Calida.

Berart Mazan, Duc de Boussac, Secrétaire d’État des Colonies, Grand Officier de l’Ordre Royal de Saint-Arltrees

Spoiler

Coat-of-Arms:

The Lion of Boussac is one of the most important advisors to His Majesty, and as Secretary of State of the Colonies responsible for Oleon’s fate beyond the line. Traditionalists grumble that the task of protecting the nation from her hereditary northern enemy and controlling Oleon’s overseas expansion shouldn’t go hand in hand. But the Lion of Boussac is an able man, and where better to keep Oleon’s foes at bay than in the waters of New Terra.

Guiscard Emery de Beauregard, Duc de Corban, Secrétaire d’État de la Marine, Commandeur de l’Ordre Royal et Militaire de l’Étoile d’Ardros, Commandeur de l’Ordre Royal de Saint-Arltrees, Grand-Amiral d’Oleon

Coat-of-Arms:

31523144086_f7b4fbd4bd_o.png

Growing up in chateau Sans-Nuage-sur-Maine - located in the hills just outside the harbor-city of Quilbignon - the young Lord almost naturally acquired a taste for saltwater, and soon was sent to pursue a career in His Majesty’s Royal Navy. Towards the end of the Forty-Nine Years War he was promoted to Grand Admiral of Oleon, and although unsuccessful in preventing Corrington from taking the Isle of Tam, he - under the direction of the Lord Chancellor - managed the rebuild of La Royale, which ultimately gained the upper hand over her Corrish counterpart in the following Juniper War. Today the Secretary’s attention shifts towards the eastern seas as the race for New Terra is speeding up. Oleon’s fate depends on La Royale - and on the salt in the Secretary’s veins.

Guérin Godefry de Tourment - nicknamed Le Doublonoi - Duc d’Eranos, Connétable d’Oleon, Grand’Croix de l’Ordre Royal et Militaire de l’Étoile d’Ardros, Maréchal d’Oleon

Spoiler

Coat-of-Arms:

31523145086_6e75a1a73d_o.png

Ever since official records first appeared, there has been a de Tourment holding the ‘Southern Key’ and shielding Oleon from the perils of Halos. Traditionally, the de Tourments also hold the title and position of Connétable d’Oleon, providing able commanders for Oleon’s armies who have proven their loyalty in every single conflict in Oleander history. But the house is not only a source of military genius for the Crown. Over the last decades they have also grown rich as prime suppliers of the Royal Army - a development that isn’t to the liking of all at the Royal Court.

The Order of the Faith

The Order of the Faith is a secretive band of highly influential clerics that is heavily involved in Oleander politics.
As little is known fact about the Order and its agenda and ways, there are plenty of rumors out on the streets. Some see the Order's influence as a danger to the Monarchy, some even go as far as saying the Order already holds the true power over Oleon, with the Monarch acting only as a puppet. Others counter, pointing out that Oleon is free of dissidents, highlighting the Orders alleged importance for Oleon's inner stability and military might.
Wherever the truth lies, fact is that disagreeing with the Order is a good way to get into serious trouble!

The Order of the Faith can be read about in greater detail here.

The Land

Oleon is the largest country on the peninsula, and its land is naturally an important economic factor. Wealth is usually measured in land holdings, and hereditary grants pass on from father to son for generations.
In the interior, the rural nobility traditionally resides in prestigious chateaus, and peasants live in little hamlets, and work for their lords as they have for ages. There are few large cities in the interior, but towards the coast things are beginning to change as innovations are developed. Passing from a rural hamlet with the lord's impressive manor towering over it, to a bustling port town is like going from one world to another. A multitude of coastal hubs have begun to spring up.
With oceans bordering Oleon on either side, these towns have become quite numerous, and have contributed to a new emphasis on seafaring. The Order of the Faith has encouraged this emphasis, but is still eager to preserve the traditional social ways by keeping its mystical hold on the people. With its support, Oleon's navy has boomed. Her merchant fleet is growing by the day, and the Royal Navy is famous for large battleships and highly efficient gun crews, securing Oleon’s influence on the waves.

A fine example of an increasingly important city is Breshaun on Le Bellan. Founded not long ago, it has turned into a sparkling and ambitious regional centre.

Society and Culture

Traditionally, a typical Oleander's life centers around the values of – traditions. Considering themselves the most culturally advanced people, Oleanders take great pride in their rich heritage of arts and literature. They are generally pious people, living in accordance with the divine rules of the Gods. But temples are visited more for social reasons than out of religious zeal.

25843701044_d4649cd291_z.jpg

It is true that the Order of the Faith holds its sway over the people, but that doesn't refrain Oleanders from enjoying life. And especially the aristocracy is known throughout Halos for celebrating the most glittering balls and festivities.
Oleon's cities are well organized and planned, their silhouettes often dominated by impressive temples erected in honor of the Gods. The architectural style is mostly a mix of renaissance and baroque western European, dominant among secular buildings – especially among the many aristocratic and royal chateaus and palaces that are in constant competition to outshine each other – and classic Mediterranean influences, which are preferred for religious buildings.
L'Aile du Pontis (The Pontis Wing) of the Royal Palace in Granoleon is a great example for the supremacy of Oleander architects and craftsmen.

The Military

Oleanders are known to be fierce warriors if necessary. Military might is of paramount significance, as land is the defining social factor in society. Honor and bravery are values that every Oleander holds in high esteem, sacrificial soldiering on the fields of battle is every Oleander's duty, to die for the nation is considered the highest honor.

The Army

dsc01899.jpg

Ever since the days of King Arltrees the color blue is prominent in the uniforms and flags of the royal military.
The standard military uniform always includes a blue coat, often but not always accompanied by white cross belts. A fleur-de-lys is not uncommon on the uniforms and flags either.
As presented above, the standard military flag is a white cross on a blue background with a crown over crossed cannons, but there are numerous deviations from these standards. In every case, however, the color blue must be present!

(some conventional flags)

As a result of a history of warfare, mostly with Corrington, many cities and ports are fortified with large walls and impressive fortresses to protect the citizens in case of an invasion.

The Navy

Oleon's Royal Navy – or La Royale as she is affectionately called by the people – is among the finest and largest in all of the known world.
Heavily expanded after the Forty-Nine Years War at the instigation of the Order of the Faith, La Royale managed to have the edge over Corrington's navy during the following Juniper War, but has since then been locked in a stalemate with her biggest rival.
Oleon's master shipwrights are considered leading in the construction of heavy warships, and the emphasis on constant training and education has lead Oleander gun crews to become the most efficient in the known world.

Here you can see a fine example of Oleander ship building, the glorious HRS Pride of Oleon.

Ranking System

If you create your sigfig you are - of course - free to give it any rank you wish. So if you want - for example - a Captain to sail your ship through the waters of New Terra - create a Captain. If you want a Major fighting off Oleon's enemies on the fields of battle - create a Major. However, we would ask you not to start out too high up in rank right away. There are certain official ranks that can be earned, and they bring in-game benefits and lots of prestige - not to mention the awe of your foes.

So fight for your own and Oleon's glory and rise through the ranks - do you have what it takes?

Army Ranks:

  • Maréchal (Marshal)
  • Général d'Armée (Army General)
  • Général de Division (Division General)
  • Général de Régiment (Regiment General)
  • Colonel (Colonel)
  • Lieutenant Colonel (Lieutenant Colonel)

Naval Ranks:

  • Grand-Amiral d'Oleon (Grand Admiral of Oleon)
  • Amiral (Admiral)
  • Vice-Amiral (Vice Admiral)
  • Contre-Amiral (Rear Admiral)
  • Chef d'Escadre (Commodore)
  • Capitaine de Vaisseau (Ship-of-the-Line Captain)

Rank Requirements and Benefits:

Promotions can be earned through military contributions, means through repeated and active participation in war campaigns, fleet actions, through acts of bravery, and - as a base requirement - you need to loyally follow orders.

For promotions to High Command - Général de Régiment respectively Contre-Amiral and higher - a noble title of at least Marquis is required - to make sure only the best of the best command Oleon's finest.

'But where's the beef?' - you may ask. Well, excelling in military actions is a profound way to boost your social standing in Oleon. It will lead to some shiny medals and ribbons, can contribute to your house's growing reputation, and might eventually get you His Majesty's attention - which can open doors you didn't even believe existed. And - who knows - maybe one day you'll end up commanding the unit you were once fighting alongside with - or determine the fate of a whole royal fleet in the vast waters of New Terra.

Diplomacy

Oleon has a hostile history with Corrington, and during the last war the two factions proved to be an even match.
Officially there is no direct trade with Corrington, but various goods do make there way around via Eslandola and smugglers of all sorts.
Pirates are tolerated as long as they don't operate within Oleon claimed waters, piracy is a crime and offenders will be brought to justice when they are caught.

(Note: Relationships are judged on a 1 to 5 scale; Very Friendly, Friendly, Indifferent, Unfriendly, Hostile)

Oleon's relationship with...
Sea-Rats: Indifferent
Eslandola: Friendly
Corrington: Unfriendly

Membership

To sign up, post a picture of your signature figure, preferably accompanied by Oleon's formal flag colors. You are welcome to include a bit of a description as well.
Your signature figure, or sigfig, will represent your character throughout your MOCs within Brethren of the Brick Seas.
(That does not mean that your sigfig has to be in every MOC you make)
Although this is the “Bluecoat” faction, that does not mean that everyone should have a bluecoat soldier as sigfig.

Within BoBS there are many possibilities. Build your own story – for example, your sigfig could start out as a carpenter that decides to work on a ship. Via battle experiences he ends up getting his own ship, eventually becoming a privateer in His Majesty's service, etc.

Colonial Possessions

If you'd like to establish a settlement, please contact one of the members of the Oleon leadership team. In general, we would like a minimum of one settlement for each island. If you have an idea for a new settlement to establish at one of our new colonial processions, let us know!

The Royal Office of the Colonies would like limit settlements on islands that already have settlements. We feel that a fewer settlements per island is a better strategy militarily and economically than many small ones on all islands. However, if you don't ask to start a settlement, you won't know if you can.

Also, consider working with the established colonies to be how you'd like. Who knows, if there's no mayor, you may be appointed. Mayors are typically appointed for significantly contributing to a settlement or making a generous contribution to the empire.

Settlement: Breshaun
Settlement: Eltina

Île de Zeus

Nickname: The Shrouded Isle
Geographical Features: Odd currents and wind patterns have almost permanently shrouded this island in a constant fog which rolls in and out multiple times a day. The island is heavily wooded, and 75ft at its highest point. There is a good water supply.
Rumors: There is a powerful artifact on this island, one which Zeus dropped himself. This causes the clouds to be attracted to the island. It seems hard to see on this island, and may be hard to see ships approaching as well.

25842724636_19863ec445_c.jpg

Settlement: Astrapi

Île de Tyche

Nickname: The Trap
Geographical Features: A small island, no more than 30 miles long, it is shaped as an upside down and backwards “L” the inner bay seems to have become a final resting spot of at least three explorer’s vessels and crews. This is caused by a unique wave pattern that comes crushing in towards the center of the “L”. The island itself has a higher elevation than “New Terraversa” which it sits only seven miles form. It has rocky cliffs, but none of the swamps that its neighbors have.
Rumors: It is rumored that a great Pirate Lord has made this island his home, and within it is a great Gold mine.

Settlement: Cecropia

Pharos

Nickname: The Tadpole
Geographical Features: Maybe 10 miles at its longest, and under a mile wide at points, the tadpole is the smallest major island in the region. Like the Smoker, it sits up on bluffs, and old Volcano falling back into the water through erosion. There is little soil for producing much more than rudimentary crops. However, the cliffs and its small size make it nearly impenetrable from sea. A true stronghold, with few resources.
Rumors: None

Settlement: Acropolis

Stéphanique

Nickname: The Old Man's Beard, The Woeful Miser
Geographical Features: The Island's bright white beaches cut by light grey limestone rock lend the island its first nickname. A well-weathered mountain makes up the middle of the Island, on the western slopes of which tropical forests grow. The Eastern coast is quite rocky, and there exists a natural harbour. Quarries may do well here.
Rumors: The earliest report stated that this Island held a vast supply of gold. The adventurer who reported this claim retired early with great sums of wealth, but no further claims have arisen. The original claim was never substantiated, and the adventurer cannot be located for comment.

Settlement: Windfall Island
Settlement: Lavalette

Île Sous le Vent

Nickname: The Island of Clay
Geographical Features: Less humid than many islands in the seas of Prio, this Island's soil is comprised of hard clay. The surrounding sea is deep, and the beaches are sandy, with a few clay cliffs. This island lacks any tall peaks, but hosts a small forested area to the southwest. The north experiences large gusts of cooler wind. Mediterranean growing conditions exist here, and it has suitable grassland for grazing animals.
Rumors: Grapes may grow well here.

Île d'Or

Nickname: The Crown
Geographical Features: This island's coasts are white sand, and the surrounding sea is deep, but a small ridge of coral does exist to the west. The natives of this island dive for pearls in the reef ridge, where they also cast nets for fish. The Island's soil is rocky, and not great for crop growing.
Rumors: It is rumoured that there may be gold on this island. It is also suspected that the natives of this island are related to those from the glimmering archipelago.

A task that the regiment will surely live up to!

The exact distribution of Oleon's troops in New Terra is secret to the public eye for obvious reasons. Be assured though, His Majesty takes the safety of his loyal subjects very seriously.

A new Company of royal soldiers will be send by the King for every island that is rightfully claimed by Oleon.
Additionally, new troops can be raised according to the following chart.

Quick Start Guide

Going through all of the topics and forms can be overwhelming. This tutorial was created in an effort to get Oleon Citizens to understand the steps involved getting the most out of their builds for BoBS. There are multiple levels of commitment, Joining, Freebuilds, Economic Game System, and Monthly Raiding and Commerce Action. BoBS has currency, so consider the amount you're spending.

Joining the Empire of Oleon in Brethren of the Brick Seas

Share a picture of your main character along with his back story in this topic! Remember, BoBS is story driven. :pir-wink:

Freebuilds

Posting freebuilds in BoBS is a two step process once you've posted your MOC in the BoBS Forum.

You may then post your land-based MOC in the appropriate settlement topic, with links provided in an above post. If you are not sure or don't care where your building goes, let the Oleon Leadership Team know, so that we can place it at a location inline with our plans for growth. Your free build will then benefit the settlement by increasing its settlement level and trade value.

Economic Game System (EGS)

To participate in the Economic Game System with Properties, there is the EGS topic.

  • Fill out the appropriate form for each building. When placing properties in one of the above settlements, you are not placing the property on NPC territory. We do not have modifiers (yet). Breshaun is located in Le Bellan A8. And Eltina is located in Le Bellan G17.
(Your first small license besides Forts and Mines is free)
  • In your posting for the settlement, mention that your property is licensed.

Monthly Raiding and Commerce Action (MRCA or sometimes called YMCA)

Participation in the MCRA is an exciting venture! And the thrill of waiting for the outcome will take your breath away! Want to join?
In short, here's how (all required paperwork can be found here) Note, your first Class 2 or smaller vessel is free.:

  • Build a ship MOC, and post it,
  • Register it in the Freebuild-Thread, and additionally register it via the FB-Form,
  • License your ship (you have a free license available to start right away!) using the Ship License Form,
  • Fill out the MCRA Form, OR (better and preferred)...
  • Send the Leadership Team a PM to gain access to the official 'Royal Escorts' chat to benefit from our experience and the King's protection,
  • In any case: pray to Poseidon!

If you still have questions, feel free to ask in this topic, in the BoBS intro topic, or PM one of the leaders.

Captain Winfrit Townsend Esq., Bravest of the Brave

Born of a merchant sea captain, Winfrit went to sea for the first time at age eleven. By eighteen he was skippering vessels of the various trading companies in Oleon. After generating a substantial fortune, Winfrit purchased a ship of his own. He then took up privateering to generate fame to go along with his rising rank in society.

Levelheadedness and bravery in battle have been the hallmarks of Captain Townsend's career. Looking towards the horizon, Winfrit is optimistic of what lies beyond.

Hugo d' Offren, petty officer at his majesty royal navy

Coming from an old but poor aristocratic bloodline of Oleon. His father was the famous general Hermol d' Offren, whose huge painting still adjourns their nearly dilapidated cottage back home. Hermol was among king's most capable generals when one acute disagreement with a wealthier aristocrat threw him out of favor rather quickly.

At present, the family's farm and a partial kinship to the now imposing Oleon hero Frédéric Coutart, on his mother side, is all what keeps family afloat. Oh, these and a dashing act of courage from young Hugo when he commandeered a fire ship destined to hit "Glory of Oleon" and guided it back to a Corrington's squadron. Ah, war...war never changes... Now our hero, eager to clean his family name and with another hidden agenta deep in his heart, is anxiously awaiting for his next assignment on a ship destined to the unknown east.

I can say already that I probably won't be the most active of members, but I do want to give this a try :classic: .

Henri Antoine La Valette, de la Rocheforte

Henri de la Rocheforte comes from an old and powerful aristocratic family who rule the la Rocheforte region. Being an old family, they own a lot of land and their income is largely generated by farming and taxes paid to the family. Proud and pious Oleonders all, the family has an impressive military history, serving King, Gods and Country on numerous occasions. Despite carrying a deep grudge against Corrington, Henri focuses his efforts on trading and gathering wealth instead of combat. However, if push comes to shove, Henri will stand his ground and fight. Like many nobles in Oleon, Henri too was schooled in war at the finest universities.

Srg Montagne

Not much is know about Montagne and his past or family. Raised in one dreadful and forgotten orphanage in one of the smaller inland towns, he escaped at age of 11 and came to one of the bigger costalcities in Oleon. A boy without any family, name or money, he took to stealing. Food at first but after a while, gold and other valuable items.

And soon he found himself doing small crimes for the secret "underground" in Oleon until at age of 15 he was caught with a few others of his gangmembers.

Sentenced to a lifetime of prison or given the choice of militaryservice for the evergrowing need of men fighting in the war.

He was placed and trained in a squad consisting of misfits like himself, men with nothing to lose, "Nameless group" doing the Oleon army dirty and dangerous missions, secret and no no talk about because it would had been too much for the Proud Oleon people.

He was good, he rose in rank and became one of the leaders in the squad. After the war the remaining "Nameless" soliders were placed away in different cities military fortifications in Oleon, under the observation of the Order. They where too dangerous to go free but Montagne didn´t care too much about it because he didn´t have anything outside of the army nor did the others. So now he just drinks, plays cards and amuse himself with the women at the taverns, on the expense of the crown.

Now with the beginning of an new era and a new world to explore. So now has the crown decided that every man and solider should take part in exploring the new found lands and claim them for the proud Oleon.

So the calling goes once again for Samir Montagne to rise up and enrol the duty of his Majestys army but this time as a navy solider and "bodyguard" for the explorers and others. Now he sails out, only time will tell what the future holds.

Private Quinn Wills

Born to a relatively wealthy merchant family, Quinn never felt the job suited him. Despite his father's protests, he got enlisted himself on of the frigates of the Oleon Navy, seeking adventure and fortune as he sailed away from his homeland.

This looks interesting and I'm tempted to join here, seeing as I have a good amount of blue-coats (and redcoats soon, if all goes well). I'll try to join soon, if possible. :classic:

So Oleon is basically a France/Spain cross? I could enjoy that. My character is definitely going to be a secret heretic.

None of the Brethren of the Brick Seas factions are meant to be very similar to a particular country. Any likeness is purely coincidental.

In the culture discription is written: "Oleanders are not interested in trading". What effects does that has? Can I have despite of that be a trader under the flag of orleon and start with a "free ship license" to trade?

Well, if you really want to be a trader, join Eslandola :) if you are a Faithloving person who trades when he has no worshipping to do, go for Oleon.

Please don't pick a faction because that is your favourite colour, but pick a faction because you are attracted to their discription :)

I don't think you should take that too literal. No decent (modern) nation can thrive without traders. I read that as the Oleanders' priority is war, then trade. Besides, in other parts of the introduction Oleon is said to be hiring traders and there is talk of trade, so I'm sure a trader is a viable character option. My character is more interested in trade, too, because I don't have the parts I need to build gigantic warships  .
Quick Glance: Oleanders have the largest ships, have their cities protected by large forts, and have a moderate colonial presence. Faith in the Deities and in their priest guide the everyday rule and colonization. Oleon is eager to accept new members, especially traders, craftsmen, naval officers, seamen, agriculturalists, priests, and entrepreneurs who share their faith.

Diplomacy: Oleon has a hostile history with Corrington, and during the last war the two factions proved to be an even match. Officially there is no direct trade with Corrington, but various goods do make there way around via Eslandola and smugglers of all sorts.

Typically, trading is not a favorite Oleander pastime (I sort of get the impression that most Oleanders would look down on traders, as being "new rich" sort of; also because they belong to the working class, not the leisure class), but there can certainly be exceptions!

An easy way to, say, "circumvent" this situation in my book, is to get one of your loyal subjects to work in one of your enterprises and do the trading for you.

I struggle to see how Oleon could even EXIST without at least having a substantial amount of domestic trade - that is, within its own borders and among its own people. Even so, history tells us isolationism rarely worked out well - even if we aren't pursuing reality. If you have numerous coastal ports there should be quite a bit of trade between those ports. Otherwise, why would they even exist except for fishing? Every single port cannot possibly be a big naval base. Goods and citizens of Oleon would be moving quite a bit within Oleon (and the same for the other factions) regardless of outside trade. Likewise it seems snobbish for anyone to look down on trade (as a part of commerce) when most people would have been at the very least somewhat dependent on it, even if it was land-based. Generalizations may work as quick descriptions but I think any advanced sea-going society from that time would have included a little of everything.

All the factions have traders. Even the Sea Rats can conduct trade of sorts... (although, their former of trade is more akin to smuggling, I'd say, as they trade in often stolen or illicit goods.)

Each faction has a distinct flavor and culture, however, and one should try to consider that while constructing one's character.

A trader from Oleon will likely worship Poseidon as his patron deity (or the lesser god Hermes, if that's your thing) and would certainly clash with the aristocracy, or else be a partner of one of the Aristocratic lords, or, even, a trader sanctioned by the Order of the Faith. An Oleon trader may be critical of the gods, or devout, and will likely have members of his crew on both sides, depending on discretion and dramatic considerations. And, of course, an Oleonder trader would best remember that the Order can commandeer his vessel should they need it... The Oleoders can be critical of traders, fearful of the new ideas they may spread, but again, traders sanctioned by the Order will certainly demand respect, and the clergy of Poseidon definitely supports trade, as Poseidon claims dominion over and offers protection to those who ply the seas for profit. Furthermore, an Oleonder trader benefits from the military might of their nation, and are more likely to receive military protection than a less powerful nation. Additionally, Oleonder traders have plenty of land to trade with, as Oleon is famous for its land owning culture.

An Eslandola trader benefits from the whole culture revolving primarily around his craft, and receives privilege and respect for plying the seas for legitimate coin. He may be a member of an established company, or forge his own ways.

A trader in Corrington benefits from the forward thinking and orderly culture. A Corrington trader makes use of the best navigational tools and charts, and ships his wares on time. Likewise, a Corrington trader is likely to captain his crew with military precision, and perhaps peruse the latest scientific journals in his downtime. Their wares are heavily taxed, but they love their Queen, and acknowledge the taxes go to benefit their highly developed infrastructure. It helps keep the ships arriving on time, and allows for efficient trade.

And, lastly, a Sea Rat trader can come in many types... but most are your Smugglers of lore. Your Han Solos and Mal Reynalds. These rebellious scoundrels specialize in getting goods from point A to point B with as few imperial entanglements as possible! Whether they have a heart of gold, or a heart longing solely for gold, they get the job done, or else get in trouble with their employers. They smuggle and launder the Ill begotten loot of the Pirates who call Bastion their home, as well as their legitimate craftspeople, in trade for the goods necessary for survival... those that cannot merely be taken from other merchant vessels by piracy, that is. Also, the Sea Rats can trade in inherently illicit goods, where certain goods are outlawed (where there's a tobacco embargo, you'll find Sea Rat Tobacco. Where there's a liquor Prohibition, you'll find Sea Rat Bootleggers. Where there are Sumptuary laws, you'll find Sea Rat dye.) Also, they trade Parrots pretty legitimately. These are the rough and tumble smugglers and traders, bound to no country or company, just trying to make their way in the world.

Good explanation, it's like I saw it as well  .

E.g: My character Henri Antoine La Valette, de la Rocheforte is from an ancient aristocratic family who owns a castle and a big swathe of land in northern Oleon. The primary generator of wealth for this family is tax revenue and income from their farmlands and wood cut from their forests. However, with the discovery of new lands in the east, they want to expand: gain more land in the New World, but also add a new stream of income to their revenue: trading. Also, the La Valette, de la Rocheforte family has a strong military tradition like most Oleander aristocratic families, so my character too has a military background and combat experience. So, in the end, I have a trader character who also complies with the general culture of Oleon :classic: .
