The Empire of Corrington: Sign-up and Discussion

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the kind welcome, Bregir. Yeah, it was always going to be Corrington for me - the last time I checked my blood was red, not blue or green or black. Too bad it took me so long to join up but I finally overcame my big aggravating technical hurdle and I'm ready to go. We seem pretty well represented by now, and ought to be a match for those insufferable Oleanders. Is it just me, or is trash talk the official language of all those *other* factions? Hehe, here I am engaging in trash talk by NOT engaging in trash talk... surely a sign of our superior advanced forward scientific magnificent progressive society. I tip my tricorn hat to you, my fellow Corries, and bow in obeisance to our lovely Queen Anetta!

Our advanced tone of interaction is surely a proof of our superior and highly advanced culture, which far outmatches other inferior nations! ;)

Are we going to have a private chat for Corrington's MRCA? Also any way I can get a discount on a caravel license if I don't have any other ship?

Is it a very large ship? Perhaps it could be licensed under the free (class two) license now, an then when it is fully outfitted or crewed later, (and you have the money)you could update to a larger, more fitting license?

If leadership will allow it and you can write up some story to explain it, that might be a solution.

A more interesting solution could be to borrow the money from your fellow corlanders. I would personally be willing to lend you my full 45 dubloons at very reasonable interest against security in the vessel, other personal belongings, and future income. If you have two free builds and an intro yourself, you are already at 90 dubloons, more than halfway. So two more (Or preferable spreading the risk across more of our teammates) and you have the 175 dubloons for the license!

Then we have only to hope the ship does not flounder at sea, and that it brings home a healthy profit! ;)

Anybody else of our glorious teammates willing to lend Mike some gold?

Hmm, now I'm getting ideas of setting up a bank and an insurance company, when I have made the capital to do so... :P

Hahaha if I am correct, that will already be the case with the Bank of Eslandola in the future :)

Bank of Eslandola

Take out a loan!!!

Stock Markets of Corrington

Make wagers if that next joint stock company will actually succeed in taming a faraway land…

We Corlanders believe in competition and the free market. Ever since our great scientist "Smith Adamson" wrote his epic work "Wealth of Corrington" we have known it to be true that state monopolies (especially those of other states) should be broken by private initiative. Only this can we maximise the wealth of our great nation! ;)

If the good sailor can convince the powers-that-be, aka the gamemasters, that it is okay and allowed, I want to propose that I will `buy` our fellow Corlander his `free ship license`, in exchange for the 35 doubloons I have currently earned (ship and intro).

That way, he is a step closer to getting his big ship, and I will be able to invest that again in a small class vessel I have my eye on in the next month, and insurance on my sponsorship, should the capital be needed.

As the free license is up to 150 dubloons worth, maybe you should try to get another freebuild in, and offer him 45 instead? That seems more fair. pirate_wink.gif

However, this leaves the question of how to handle the fact, that a builder is always entitled to a free license. As I see it, as long as your ship is sailing on his license (assuming you make the trade) he will not be eligible for a free license.

Another option could be to only pay the difference between the free license (for instance valued at 100, as that is the most common value) and the caravel license. Then it would only take 75 Dubloons, which could be scrounged together by his own money and my loan. This, of course requires that the crown will discount the free license on the caravel license.

And if all goes wrong, I have a piece of junk - erhm, I mean a vessel of the type "junk" (I imagine it as a class 2 t) - that I might be willing to negotiate for. (I think it turned out better than my xebec).

But as I see it, it is all up to mr. Aidan Coyle and the Crown. (And obviously whether other Corlanders are willing to lend out money.)

Ah right, I forgot the always free part. Never mind the offer.

Mike, if you need the gold, I`ll lend it to you then for a share of the profits as intrest :-)

Ah, I now see two options:

Either we lend Aidan Coyle the money to buy this ship for himself against a fixed interest, (I was thinking something like 5-10% a month) OR we go together a group of Corlanders and charter the ship together, thus splitting profits (with some premium for the captain, of course) and risk!

Oh, the endless opportunities! pirate_laugh2.gif

First off thanks for the response. The ship is one "mid-section" shorter than the Imperial Flagship but is slightly taller and wider than the flagship. Similarly it has a dedicated lower deck for 8 cannons, 4 to each side. As Aiden is penniless at the moment, it would be sort of out of character for him to own property so I was going to do free builds of him exploring once his ship is repaired. I kind of figured the folks at the Royal Society of Navigation and Discovery (and perhaps even the queen since the ship will be painted her favorite colors) would sponsor his voyage to discover new land once they became aware of his ship. Aiden would expect that his sponsors be given a percentage of the profits.

*A letter arrives by courier to Aiden Coyle, bearing the seal of the Montoya family*

To Captain Aiden Coyle, esq.

Your plans for an expedition to the New World has come to my attention, as has your struggles in ensuring the necessary funding.

As a natural philosopher, I have a particular interest in the culture, flora, and fauna of these yet undiscovered regions, and wish to support efforts in further exploration.

Therefore, I hereby present you an offer to support your expedition.

I am willing to invest 45 golden dubloons (appr. one quarter of the license) in your expedition, against a 20 % share of profits and the promise that you will bring me any interesting specimens and artifacts you should encounter. (Preferably alive and well!)

This offer is contingent on acceptance by the Crown, as well as full funding of your venture.

I shall very much be looking forward to your response or counteroffer.

Best regards

Don Isaac Montoya

Natural Philosopher.

I failed to mention in my sign-up post (previous page) that I want to claim the heraldry of the 2013 Dragon Knights as the Dee family crest and also as the symbol of the craftsman's guild operated by the family - as long as no one objects. (I just saw Gideon's post of the same type and it reminded me that I'd forgot to include that bit.) Of course I'm open to anyone using those torsos in particular for members of the aforementioned guild. I wanted a unique look and since I have enough of those minifigs (deep into triple digits!) to equip a sizeable shipyard (or something) I thought a guild with uniforms would be a good way to use them. Thoughts?

I see no issue with this, although it would be nice to know what sort of craftsman's guild we are talking about. (If it is the guild for left-hand front-wheel spoke manufacturing for the royal carriage, it might be a bit narrow for such a widely available heraldry... pirate_wink.gif )

Further, a picture would probably have been a nice addition, to know what heraldy exactly you are referring to. pirate_blush.gif

I don't have a specific enterprise in mind for the guild - that would be too limiting. I would apply it to what I call "heavy industry" for the time - shipbuilding, iron-working, etc. There are lots of options and I don't want to restrict what other people can build. I hope to illustrate this fully when I get my character intro up.

EDIT: I'm mostly interested in the use of the Dragon Knight torsos; the shields aren't a big concern to me but I will use a few of them for decorative purposes. You can see one of the torsos in question on the lower left minifig in my sign-up on the previous page.

No issue with me, I kind of 'unofficially' adopted the long gone green dragon crest as my house design

@Captain Dee Vlad doesn't really use heraldry (his family has fallen out of favour), but his family's ancient coat of arms resembles the 2013 dragons. I'll be unlikely to use more than the shield though. Perhaps we could hint at familial ties?

Well I just found this:

70413 The Brick Bounty = Brig

4184 Black Pearl = War Brig / Heavy Sloop?

4195 Queen Anne's Revenge = Heavy Sloop

6243 Brickbeard's Bounty = Birg

10210 Imperial Flagship = Heavy Sloop

6250 Cross Bone Clipper = Cutter / Sloop

6280/6291 Armada Flagship = Brigatine

6289/6290 Red Beard Runner = Snow

6256 Islander Catamaran = Catamaran

6268 Renegade Runner = Armed Sloop / cutter

6271 Imperial Flagship = Small Schooner / Snow / Large Sloop (depending on how rigged)

6277 Imperial Trading Post = Small Sloop

6286 Skull's Eye Schooner = Heavy Sloop / War Schooner

6274 Caribbean Clipper = Large Sloop

6285/10040 Black Seas Barracuda = Brig"

Accordingly, my ship is actually a schooner class....pirate_sceptic.gif

Well, Phred, if you want my goods you'll need to capture a ship or try the black market or something...

...because the Dee family doesn't sell outside Corrington! Nothing against friendly, peaceful trade, but some things just aren't sold directly into opposing hands.

Do you like broccoli? Spinach? Brussel sprouts? I'll sell you all you want!!

@Mike: Use your creative license pirate_wink.gif

Have you looked at Maxim's ship index? Then you can compare your ship to the others, to see where it fits in size-wise. Then pick the class depending on size and characteristics (trade, fast, armed, etc.), regardless of whether your ship is a Schooner, caravel, carrack, cutter, etc.

Maybe you have a WIP shot of the ship, so we can give you some pointers on ship class?

@Dee: Are you selling our broccoli!? pirate_oh.gif

That is actually Scarst's plan. He has already worked out risk charts, he just needs the capital to insure vessels.

Free licenses cannot be bought from another player because then the player could just claim another. As for the discount question, this wouldn't work in the game mechanics to keep everything balanced. However, as asked later in the thread, you could always use the free license, and then re-license it to a bigger ship later, although I kind of agree that that MOC is more than a class 3, and is probably a slightly better armed Class 5 F. (Not necessarily a schooner, since it is square rigged -- and the best "real life" labeling is probably a caravel.)

IT is perfectly fine for an organization, trade partnership, company, fellowship, etc... to own a ship, but it will be registered in one of those members names as the "lead owner" or "Executive Officer" of the trust that holds the ownership. In game terms, that person gets all of the loot, and will have to distribute it via the simple payments webform. Which also means they could hold on to it and not pay out if they wanted. As for the situation at hand, if this was a Class 5 F ship, it may be worth the investment of the 8 parties needed to hit the 350DBs, because it has a large cargo value and can visit 4 ports. It will probably need escort however. That is a fat target early in the game.

Although... I am not sure how many Sea Rats will be out raiding -- but the current rules (which many are kept hidden to keep the mystery) call for the "populating" of each zone with a certain amount of pirates. So again, protection will be needed.

Nice looking ship, Mike! It does appear to be quite large, though! pirate_oh.gif

Looking it up on Wikipedia, I think the closest type would be Carrack (since it carries lateens on the mizzen, and has those high fore- and aftcastles.) pirate_blush.gif

Hmm, it seems Coyle and Co. is off to find further financing! Perhaps it could be registered as a class 4 T2 instead? The 300 is more reachable, and it packs a bit more of a punch. Of course, it lacks cargo capacity and speed of the 5 F... Hmm, I will confer with mr. Coyle.

And I completely agree - hopefully the crown will assist with one of the royal vessels to escort it!

And should someone decide to appropriate an excessive share of the proceeds, I suppose he could be taken to court? pirate_wink.gif

That is actually Scarst's plan. He has already worked out risk charts, he just needs the capital to insure vessels.

It speaks volumes of your basic rules when things like this becomes possible! It is really cool how people can build upon the system. pir_laugh2.gif

Perhaps he should seek funding in the stock markets of Corrington (like Mike is basically doing)? Others might be interested in sharing the profits and risks! pirate_tong.gif
