Mister Phes

Your Dream Pirate Sub-Theme

Recommended Posts

I made that suggestion about the ninjas overlaying as well as the oriental indians and chinese from the johnny thunder series with the southern africa idea but no one seemed interested in either suggestion. Read from the beginning of the thread and you'll see it mentioned, going beyond the Caribbean gives us loads of crossovers

with Welsh baggage handlers :-P

Hey, Just becuase Scotland is more known for rebelling than the Welsh doesn't make picking on the Welsh fair.

Back to the actual topic, Merchants would be the best, but all would be great. I especially think that blacksmiths and other tradesmen would be cool to have. Also big harbors that are not strictly imperial theme to them, like ITP without all the imperial men, more plains clothes.

One of the problems with the lego minifigs as they stand for me is how civilian figures and pirate figures can be too similar in appearance given the simple lack of a uniform to define them as imperials. Blacksmiths as you said can be regarded as a specialist and with a good design they could be destinguished as colonists and not pirates. Personally I've tried advocating missionaries in a type of Jesuit or Dominican designed clothing. Farmers couldn't be too hard to depict with the use of agricultural implements too.

Don't stress about the Welsh crack, I have to make refference of Wales and Scotland to try convince most members of this forum that English and British are not sinonymous and it takes some bloody work to do!

Imagine if Lego introduced slavers as a "bad guy" subtheme, complete with a slave ship, an African village, and an auction block, and maybe a plantation house. The Imperials would try to crack down on the illicit human trafficking (as the British did). Pirates could of course take over the slave ships and recruit the captives as crew for high seas adventures!

I don't like slavery but it's a major part of the pirate era and I think these sets would have good play potential.

What a pity "Political Correctness" was invented... There was a slave trade in the Caribbean so no need to relocate to Africa.

Slaves are bad though.

On the subject of disturbing non-military pirate subthemes, it also occurred to me that a whaling/fishing subtheme would also have a lot of potential (big ships, port town bars, fishing boats) but could be bloody.

Aye, whaling would be great! Just imagine those whales. :pir-classic:

What else? Well, maybe colonists of some kind. Or explorers - with a main character based on people like James Cook etc.

Not too sure if this is a sub-theme or a continuation of the theme, but here it goes. Lego has shown that they are willing to sell bigger models for the Star Wars themes, why not some big ships and ports for the pirate theme.

The first set could be a large port made with two 48x48 plates. It would have a merchant ship yard, small merchant ship, civilian buildings, a pub, the governors house, and a military presence. This set would include 1 governor, 1 bar maid, 2-3 pirates, 2-3 merchants, and 3-4 Imperial Marines (New Minifigs). It could sell for around $200US

The second set would be a Ship-of-the-Line with 20-40 cannons (wishful thinking). It would have a crew of 4-5 sailors, 1 captain, and 2-3 Imperial Marines. It would also include a longboat with maybe a pirate or three. This set would be around $100-150US

The third set would be a medium size pirate ship with a small land piece for the pirates to bury their treasure. They could include 1 Imperial Marine walking the plank. This set would be priced around $80US

The fourth set would be a small merchant ship with a small dock that could be attached to the first set. It would include 3-4 merchants and a Harbor Master (new minifig). This set would be $50US

The fifth set would be a small seaside inn that could attach to the first set. It would include an inn keeper and maiden with maybe an Imperial Marine and pirate figure. Price, $30US

There would also be an Imperial Marine Battle Pack with 3 Marines, 1 Sailor, and 1 Officer for $15US. And one Seaside figure set with 2 pirates, 2 merchants, and a maiden for the same $15US.

Lastly there would be a $10US set that includes a longboat, a merchant, and a marine.

The following year they would add a big coastal fort, bigger pirate ship, bigger merchant ship, more civilian buildings that would connect to the original port, and a whale. I love dreaming...
