WhiteFang Posted October 20, 2015 Hello everyone, Among the many LEGO pictorial reviews which I have done for year 2015, most of them are from the LEGO Ninjago theme. Today, I am glad to share my review of the most epic majestic LEGO Ninjago set ever released since year 2011. This is the grand opportunity for me to be able to review this set and it is only made possible through the support of TLG and Eurobricks. Actually this review should be completed earlier but it was faced with unexpected delay. I did not want to rush into doing so, and compromise the quality especially when this is a mammoth looking building set. So it is not possible for me to finish it within such a short notice. I hope this review will not be a disappointment for the long wait. Upon hearing the news release, I was looking forward to build and review this set. It feels great to embark on this project and thrills me as a reviewer to do this. Nonetheless, I hope I can provide and share good insightful views of this 70751 Temple of Airjitzu which I deemed as the must-have ultimate building set of the LEGO Ninjago Theme. LEGO Ninjago is an action based theme happening in a fictitious Ninjago City where there is good versus evil. By now, you would have realised that this home grown original design concept by TLG is very receptive among children and Ninjago has gone even stronger right after the Ghost Army sequel. Well, there is little or few opportunity to be able to see such an impressive set. The last LEGO Ninjago set which blow my mind, was the 70728 Battle for Ninjago City. I love the set very much even though I have not watched the recent cartoon series and I really can't relate how accurate it can be, but it is definitely going to be a very fun and intense building process. The 70751 Temple of Airjitzu can be classified as either a D2C (Direct 2 Consumer) or UCS (Ultimate Collector Series) equivalent. It also means this set is designed for builders above 14 years old. The building process and techniques involved are much complex than regular LEGO system sets. This will also mean more sophisticated detail on the building structure as well. I have previously mentioned that the 70728 Battle for Ninjago City is one of the biggest LEGO playset in the Ninjago theme among their releases so far. Well, the 70751 Temple of Airjitzu broke the record and took the honour. It contains 2028 pieces, a significant increase of 802 pieces from the 70728 Battle for Ninjago City. This is the most incredible legendary set ever, encompassing brand new outstanding assortment of minifigures and oriental design features within the Temple of Arijitzu. Endless and timeless fun playing for me, accompanied with excellent surrounding oriental design buildings. This is the equivalent of the 10193 Medieval Market Village. However, the price for the 70751 Temple of Airjitzu is double of the price of 10193 Medieval Market Village based on US retail price. The price increase could be due to difference of 427 pieces count and an additional five minifigures between the both sets. I will elaborate further in this review and you decide whether the hefty price tag is worth the purchase. The content of the sealed box The sealed box comes with 14 mint packs and among them, 13 mint packs is numbered and grouped from one to thirteen, a light-tan baseplate a disappointing yet expected sticker sheet and a thick instruction manual in perfect bind to guide the user to build up the set. The instruction manuals are packaged in a sealed plastic together with the sticker sheet. Do note that there is no paper cardboard at the back to support the manuals. Thankfully, the manuals are straighten without any visible bending when I opened the box. The thick instruction manual are made up of high quality printing material. The manual contains not just the instructions but also include informative on the background concept of the design, the set designers' interview and the detailed description of the LEGO Ninjago characters. If you wish to find out more on the set designers' interview, you may also see the as well. Trust me, the video is worth to watch. After the set has been built, these are the remaining generous spare parts which is spread across the packs. You can view the spare parts for packet 1 including an orange brick separator, packet 2, packet 3, packet 4, packet 5, packet 6, packet 7, packet 8, packet 10, packet 11, packet 12 and packet 13. As you may have noticed, there are plentiful of useful spare parts like the additional katanas which are great for equipping your minifigures. The 13 awesome LEGO special minifigures in the World of Ninjago In the next few sections, I will be focusing more on the minifigures aspect. In this 70751 Temple of Airjitzu, you will get a massive total of thirteen minifigures. This set now holds the record of the largest amount of minifigures being made available to any single LEGO Ninjago set till this date. I am surprised to find that this building set does not contain any antagonist despite of the large minifigures count. This is also the only set where you are able to obtain all six Ninjas at one instance, including Nya who has transformed from a samurai to a ninja. The other six minifigures include Sensei Wu and other minor characters which have appeared in the Ninjago cartoon and making its appearance for the first time. The last minifigure to mention is actually the grey statue of Sensei Yang and this will add all up to thirteen minifigures. Most importantly, I believe some of these minifigures come with brand new design outfits even though these are repeated characters. To note, these minifigures are spread across different allocated packs. Front view of Lloyd, Kai, Zane, Cole, Jay and Nya This is the only set ever to be able to get all six Ninja at one go including Nya as the new Water Ninja. In the photo above (from left to right), the featured minifigures are Lloyd, Kai, Zane, Cole, Jay and Nya. Although these six minifigures have appeared in other 2015 LEGO Ninjago sets, but you may choose not to buy them if you just wish to acquire the main characters accompanied with an UCS set. Then, this costly purchase will be your best bet. These ninja characters are wearing their new black outfit which coincide with the latest Ninjago cartoon series featuring the Ghost Army. The minifigures' design are extremely detailed. The torso designs are able to outline and distinguish the different elements accordingly. Upon removing their ninja hoods, you can view the serious no-nonsense facial appearance, with the exception of Nya. These minifigures come with detailed back printing and only Zane has a doubled-faced printing. Front view of Statue of Sensei Yang and Sensei Wu The next minifigure feature will be touching on the Statue of Sensei Yang and Sensei Wu. Little was known of Sensei Yang history and it was briefly mentioned by Misako that he was the creator of the technique of Airjitzu. It is a similar technique to Spinjitzu but in Airjitzu context, it involves the ninja tapping into their internal elemental energies while spinning rapidly, creating a tornado vortex with surrounding energy that will allow them to levitate over land. In the present, Sensei Yang is a spirit trapped in the Temple of Haunted Hill which is the same appearance as Temple of Airjitzu. Just that it's not as eerie and creepy as compared to the cartoon series. The statue is generic looking and it can be used and represent other Sensei. On the other hand, Sensei Wu has an unique minifigure design with his tan and gold outfit. However, Sensei Wu has appeared in many numerous appearance and these are some of the other design variants. Upon removing the white long beard, you can see Sensei Wu front appearance in a much cleaner look. Back printing is only available for Sensei Wu in this photo. I am glad Sensei Wu is accompanied together with the six ninja as a mentor to guide them to win the battle against evil. Front view of Dareth, Misako, Claire, Jesper and Postman The last minifigures feature is the most surprising element and that is something which I look forward to. The earlier two sections touched on the main characters and these main characters have appeared numerous times in many earlier and current LEGO Ninjago sets. The difference lie on their minifigures' design variants. To me, it does not affect much as I enjoyed collecting ninja and samurai in large quantities and regard them as generic minifigures being associated with a particular clan or specialisation. I don't have to force myself to view them as individual Ninjago characters. These five minifigures are just simply amazing. In the photo above (from left to right), the featured minifigures are Dareth, Misako, Claire, Jesper and Postman. These minifigures have never appeared before with the exception of Dareth in the 5002144 Dareth vs. Nindroid. Even Dareth have appeared once, this current Dareth minifigure is given a brand new design outfit. Therefore, I can safely say that these five minifigures are all one of its kind. From my understanding in the cartoon series, there are no actual appearances of Claire and Jasper (daughter and father). As depict by the TLG designers, Claire seems to be a tourist and Jasper is a fisherman manning the Smuggler's Market. Misako is an archaeologist, as well as Lloyd's mother, Garmadon's wife, Wu's sister-in-law, and the First Spinjitzu Master's daughter-in-law. Dareth is a laid-back, self-proclaimed kung-fu master who owns a small dojo and teaches a small group of students. The Postman works very hard in the Ninjago world to ensure mails are properly delivered. I appreciate these small little touches by the TLG designers which adds the civilian elements into the setting. These minifigures contain back printing and upon removing their hairpieces, only Misako has an alternate facial appearance. The most incredible LEGO Ninjago D2C set ever released The entire building content for Packet 1 The completed built for Packet 1 The completed built for the first packet shows the half completed structure of the Smuggler's Market. The nicest part of this built is how the interior is forming up by looking it from the top. This packet contain many useful parts especially those food accessories and white chicken. Those are really useful and handy for enhancing the playing interaction among minifigures. The 1x2 flat tile is actually stickered and it is used to represent some sort of trading playing cards. Please note that I have made a building mistake for the above two images due to the wrong baseplate used for the Smuggler's Market. I have rectified the built accordingly. Apologies for not able to post the photos The entire building content for Packet 2 The completed built for the Smuggler's Market The completed built for both packet 1 and 2 showed the entire stand-alone structure of the Smuggler's Market. These are some of the useful parts and minifigures accessories which I felt is of use to design your own MOCs. The building is well designed with beautiful black curved oriental-style roof through the use of black garage doors. The roof is well articulated and balanced from the aerial perspective. The close up view of the front beneath the roof reveal nice pearl gold mixed ornaments. The close up view of the entrance is equally attractive together with the miniature stone statues. The interior of the Smuggler's Market is well packed with food supplies and commodities. It even contain a washing basin as well. The Smuggler's Market also contain hidden treasure chests as their private trading stash, similar to a Black Market. The placement of the hidden treasure chests are well placed beneath the roof. The hidden treasure chests contain numerous ninja armaments and weapons such as katanas and shurikens. As you can see the work-in-progress built for the Blacksmith's Workshop is gaining up. The building colour scheme combination of blue and brown also complement one another. The completed built for Blacksmith's Workshop The completed built for both packet 3 and 4 showed the entire stand-alone structure of the Blacksmith's Workshop. The exterior of the building is lovely especially with the wooden pillars at the corners. Viewing it from the top, the roof is well sited and with the attic being visible from the outside. The fallen leaves on the roof are some additional nice touch as depict by those autumn looking trees. The main entrance and the signage are stickered. The interior is equally amazing with detailed features by including an anvil, hammer and other assorted tool elements. From the side view, it also reveal the presence of rat lurking near the attic. Side view of Blacksmith's workshop Back view of the completed Blacksmith’s workshop The entire building content for Packet 5 Front view of the work-in-progress temple The remaining packets will be used to build up the temple. As you can see, the fifth packet built the strong foundation of this temple by laying the concrete rock base. Behind the rocks formation, it reveals the colourful bricks that are part of the strange looking mechanism which will be elaborated in the next section as part of the Shadow Theatre feature. The entire building content for Packet 6 The completed built for Packet 6 The sixth packet focuses on building the steps to the temple as well as the Shadow Theatre. The Shadow Theatre is an interesting experience for the minifigures to experience where puppets are shone behind light across the sheet. As you turn to the side of the temple, the white plastic sheet or canvas is a beautiful outline of mountain scenery similar to a painting. You turn to the other side and rotate the acting mechanism to trigger the spinning illuminated light animated effect. This can be made possible through the aid of these elements including the light-brick. The rotating mechanism is triggered by the technic rotor. behind the rock formation and the static raw display will begin to spin and subsequently activate the light brick by shining onto it directly. Hopefully you are able to understand the basic mechanics of this fun playability feature. The entire building content for Packet 7 The completed built for Packet 7 In the seventh packet, we are focusing on the second floor of the temple. The building experience included the forming of fine oriental elements with excellent combination of red and brown to distinguish the pagoda-like structure. The sliding doors are printed and the small windows are also printed as well. These are some of the fine new elements which are surprisingly beautiful and I don't mind keeping more of those parts for building up oriental MOCs. The entire building content for Packet 8 The completed built for Packet 8 The eighth packet is used to build onto the second level of the temple and integrate the base of the new third level as well. Furthermore, we combine the temple foundation to continue building the structure upwards. The shape of the building is forming and it looks real good and exciting especially since we are four more packets away from completing the temple structure. The entire building content for Packet 9 The completed built for Packet 9 The third level is almost complete. The ninth packet is putting the exterior by placing these beautiful small windows together. The interior showed the proper training room with weapons in-place. The second level also showed the wide reception area within the temple. You can see the work-in-progress of the temple from the back view. The entire building content for Packet 10 The completed built for Packet 10 The entire building content for Packet 11 The content from the tenth and eleventh packet built and expand on the third level which include Sensei Wu's study room for reading and painting. The interior details is fantastic and the placement of the accessories such as books and painting are wonderful. There are many useful parts which can be used for minifigures accessories. Above the third level, you can spot the attic of the temple. There is a wooden storage which contain Cole's personal stuff which clearly printed and labeled as 'HANDS OFF'. Well, I managed to convince Cole to show us the content of the wooden storage and I wonder who does it belongs to. The entire building content for Packet 12 The entire building content for Temple The red pagoda-like oriental temple is finally complete. It was an intense building experience and it filled with many fine oriental features which include the sliding doors, red pillars, stickered chinese wordings for the signage which can be seen in here and over here which are positive values such as balance, justice and reputation. The roof design is splendid. I am at loss for words because it is extremely detailed on the shape and curving technique. The temple building is very tall and I managed to split into halves for easy storage. I have also included some activities pictures for the interior which can happened in the temple including the Shadow Theatre after the different view images of the temple. We are now left with the these few icons. The oriental dragon bridge is done up very nicely with the red long handle at the side of the bridge plus the stone dragons to decorate at both ends. The ninja glider is something which we are familiar with if you are an avid ninja fan. The similar design of the glider appeared in 1187 Glider back in year 1999. There are some slight differences when you flip it to the back view of both gliders. Last but not least, we have the fireworks launcher. I believe Dareth can convert this as a multiple launch cannon for offensive purpose. Front view of the completed built of Temple of Airjitzu This is the final moment which we have been waiting for. These buildings not only can stand beautiful on its own. You combine all three stand-alone buildings and integrate them into a triangular setting with the bridge and statue as the centre icon connection for this village to be established. With the entire setting being put together, it does look like a bustling small town. Please do not mind those strangling Ghost Army. Those are some bits of fun which I have added in. There is a few more surprises which I have done in this set and I hope you will like it. I love oriental building designs and personally, I feel that this design is a new level of achievement by TLG. It is the crown jewel and pinnacle of what endless possibilities that TLG can actually come up with in terms of building structure based on oriental culture. I am very impressed by the solid built of this design. This building is massively huge and tall. You definitely ought to get this set if you can and don't miss it other than the hefty price tag. This is truly an amazing LEGO D2C UCS play set ever. I even manage to integrate it and show how my classic ninja and samurai can provide an alternate playing scene. I am really glad this set was designed and released. I am looking forward to find a suitable to display this piece of magnificent LEGO set. Summary review Playability: 9/10 (Plentiful of playability features and fun action integration including the Shadow Theatre.) Design: 10/10 (Outstanding design work on the building aspect. Top notch and full marks from me.) Price: 7/10 (Price is on the high side and it may deter others from buying it early.) Overall: 8.7/10 (Get this set and don't miss it, even for non-Ninjago fans if your budget permits.) I gave it a "5" based on my Review Score Card. What about yours? Aanchir Posted October 23, 2015 (edited) Nice review! One error — you've attached the wedge plates on the upper roofline backwards. I love the instruction manual. It's nice and sturdy, and the "behind-the-scenes" features in the beginning are the kind of thing that always fascinates me, even though having to include that section in three languages adds about 20 extra pages to the manual. The main way I think it could have been improved would be adding a key visual towards the end like in some of this year's other sets, because I always love those, but that's hardly a deal-breaker. The choice not to include any villains in this set might have been to help keep it relevant for longer than just this year. Ninjago tends to have different villains from year to year, but the main characters (Sensei Wu and the six Ninja) stay consistent aside from costume changes. The minifigure selection in this set is quite excellent, with all six ninja, a new costume for Wu, and the first set appearance of Misako and the Postman. It is a shame, though, that the ninja's hair pieces are not included. All of them are readily available in other sets except for Zane's, since his hair changed this year from tan (Brick Yellow) to silver, which it does not currently appear in. It's a bit unusual in a peacetime set that the Ninja are stuck wearing their full uniforms, when Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty just this year included hair for the three ninja it came with. The trading cards are a great likeness of the Sensei Wu and Cole trading cards from back in 2011! The City of Stiix set also includes a tile resembling the Jay trading card from 2011. Great little references for Ninjago fans who have been following the theme since the beginning! Likewise, the glider is a great reference for those of us old enough to remember the original Ninja sets from the 90s. The fireworks cart is a brilliant play feature, and a very creative way to work a launcher effect into a peacetime set. It, the sliding doors, the rice-paper windows, shadow theater and other features help make the setting feel unmistakeably Asian. The baguettes in the Smuggler's Market are a fairly odd inclusion for an Asian setting, but they can be explained as imports. Obviously, the world of Ninjago in the TV show is a mish-mash of Eastern and Western cultures, so baguettes would not seem too out-of-place there, but AFOLs who don't follow the show might prefer a bit more explanation than that. Besides adding play value, the shadow theater also helps keep the space underneath the pagoda's raised base from going to waste! The tree construction next to the blacksmith is really awesome, and the use of the star elements as fallen autumn leaves is quite clever. I also love the stair construction outside the temple. The set's overall color palette is rustic but still very vibrant. Really, there are only a few real flaws to this set design-wise. First, the dragon statues are facing towards the bridge when realistically, they should be facing away from it (since statues like that are meant to guard the bridge from evil). My brother turned them around when we built the set yesterday. Second, the pagoda structure is not quite architecturally sound since the corner columns of the second floor are wider than those of the first and third floors, but that's something I can more easily dismiss as artistic license. My brother and I had a great time building this set! The overall set makes a fantastic display piece, and has some good play value as well! It's a great likeness of the location from the show (though that almost goes without saying, as the show's subjects tend to be based on the sets rather than the other way around). In my eyes, it's easily worth its price. I'd happily recommend it to other Ninjago fans and to LEGO fans in general, although people who don't follow Ninjago might understandably want to first focus their attention on less recent D2C sets that are liable to retire sooner. I look forward to seeing how Sensei Yang's temple is used in future seasons of the show (as hinted in both this set's instruction manual and the Ninjago panel from San Diego Comic-Con). I can easily see Nya traveling to the temple to learn Airjitzu. And now that the ninja have some ghostbusting skills, maybe they will be able to exorcize the temple and use it as a headquarters! So many minifigs, even if you are not a fan of the series - this one set gives you all the heroes just add the baddies of your choice. It was funny for me to read it today, because I have just finished building mine! So, I completely agree with you about the beauty of the set, the nice details and accessories, all the things to look at! It was a really nice building experience! I am not into Ninjago, but I have to admit that the Final bounty and those brick built dragons really appeal to me. So, that temple too! It's really a very beautiful display set, with some nice play features too! I really enjoyed buidling it. Some times, you don't knwo what you do, you don't see why you do what the instruction shows. And at the end, you understand! And I like when the designers bring us with special way. I found that there are some details that are not really perfect, like the black roof of the blacksmith shop, with hole near the star leaf. Another exemple, the way the sand green walls were made just under the uper roof, not perfet. But finally, all those small "imperfections" make this set a great pleasur to look at, giving it a real "man made" village, not perfet, but with a lot of humanity. It's hard to explain, I hope that you will understand. It's a very huge masterpiece, and you don't know where to look at : the bridge, the statue, the olver green grass (so great in this color!), the leaves on roof, the golden ring fo details, the way the roof of the temple is made. The real bad point are the stickers. With this price tag, we could have printed pieces instead. After finished to build it I spent some times today looking at it, making me feeling zen and wanting to be a minigif to leave here! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm probably gonna pass on this one though, cause the center of my Ninjago-display is the "Battle for Ninjago-City" and i feel the Temple is gonna steal its thunder! More importantly, it even attracts non-Ninjago fans as well. I believed this set has outdone itself and the best thing about this set is all about the built. Nice review! One error — you've attached the wedge plates on the upper roofline backwards. And, it is indeed a stupid mistake of mine. Thanks for pointing that out. It happened when I had to divide the whole building into 3 separate weekends on a continual basis. By the way, thank you for your lots of insightful thoughts on this set. It's very interesting to your hear your in depth views. It is a shame, though, that the ninja's hair pieces are not included. All of them are readily available in other sets except for Zane's, since his hair changed this year from tan (Brick Yellow) to silver, which it does not currently appear in. It's a bit unusual in a peacetime set that the Ninja are stuck wearing their full uniforms, when Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty just this year included hair for the three ninja it came with. The additional hairpieces for the ninja will be nice. I am not aware that the 70738 included hairpiece. I will love to get that set soon, especially when I miss the earlier variant. The trading cards are a great likeness of the Sensei Wu and Cole trading cards from back in 2011! The City of Stiix set also includes a tile resembling the Jay trading card from 2011. Great little references for Ninjago fans who have been following the theme since the beginning! Likewise, the glider is a great reference for those of us old enough to remember the original Ninja sets from the 90s. Excellent reference on the trading cards! Great to have you point those out. 6ix Posted October 24, 2015 As soon as I saw the press release for this set, I knew I wanted to have it. It look sooo amazing and beautiful! This set, along with the F40 announced around the same time, made me really return to the hobby. Up until then I just bought a few Architect sets (the NYC ones) and some Ideas sets (BttF and GB) just to display. But building this huge Temple of Airjitzu was a real joy for me and I started to buy sets for more of that same enjoyment, I had forgotten how fun building with Lego was. Do you mean torso piece? Dareth's legs in this set are Dark Brown, not Reddish Brown, and on top of that they're unprinted and have appeared in many, many sets, including smaller ones. The higher numbers (from 10 I believe) arein the old format (i.e. Large nu,bers, thick white outlined, transparent) whereas the lower numbers have a more formal appearance: a grey banner with a smaller number written in the middle? For me the latter layout is new, never before seen in a set. The set itself by the way is gorgeous. You don't need to be a Ninjago fan to like this one. The fact that it says Ninjago on the box is completely irrelevant as far as I am concerned. Could just as well be Creator Expert which happens to be an oriental this time... I don't know why, but I like the asian architecture style. Maybe because of its zen feeling, I have this feeling. In the Ninjago line, I don't like that much the cars, bickes and other robots. But the destiny bounty (ref 70738) or the hybrifd jet (ref 70735) really appeals to me. I don't know why. Maybe due to the color scheme, the general design, which looks really great, with nice curves and a strong appealing feeling, even if I am not into the tv show. The latest wave is very excellent from my point! And the bad gsot ninjas look gorgeous too, with some nice colors too! A very nice wave, which catch the eyes, more than the first wave from 2015. Back to the temple, even if we are not into Ninjago, we can find this set very nice, like the Medievla market in its time. It could be seen like an asian version of the medieval market, targeted Ninjago for the fan of the licence, but not only. This is the adventage of a stand alone set like this one! But for me, ninjas and samurai of 1990-s are the best. which is your favourite set? You suggest to combine this with the temple of classic ninja of 1990-s.Actuall I don't remember there was a temple there. Can you write the set number, please?
