edited to put all final images in the first post...

After seeing the LEGO movie, I wanted to re-create buildings from Emmet's neighborhood. While researching, I realized a great deal of what was in the movie was based on previously-existing sets. I thought it would be interesting to do a project that compared the original LEGO sets to the modified movie versions.

Knowing how much time, money, and physical space it would take to build these out of real bricks, I decided to try my hand at LEGO Digital Designer (LDD). After having created a couple of the buildings in LDD, I ran across the post for Bluerender and used it to generate photo-real renderings.

Here are my results:

Awesome recreations!! My favourites are the Pet Shop Townhouses, particularly the pink one. Was there also a purple building somewhere in the movie?

I wonder how many of these buildings are actually buildable with real bricks? Surely some of the bricks are not made in the precise colours required...?

Keep 'em coming tho, they look great, happy recreating

I started on a Bricksburg Apartment building yesterday. It's till in LDD but I will be building it. I couldn't find anyone else that had undertaking the task, until now. Lovely images.

Thanks for the comments!

elleana & lightningtiger: I'd love to build these brick-wise, but time, money, and physical space prevent it. That's why I opted for LDD.

timmyc1983: There was a purple townhouse in the physical set in Finn's basement. I haven't seen one yet in the movie while I've been scouring it for screen grabs to build off of.

I'm trying to re-create these builds as closely as I can to what is in the movie. I find that some of them have "floating" pieces that aren't connected to anything. While it wouldn't take much to correct the "floaters," some builds use parts that aren't made in the color used on-screen. (Insert discussion on whether or not to use paint here... :-) ) And then there's WyldStyle's cycle with the non-existent LEGO gear for the rear wheel. (Insert discussion on 3D printing here... :-P )

For now, here's another one:

The issue I have found is the same as you mentioned, the non existent colours. In light of this, I am making some subs, which is a shame as i liked the colour scheme. I am also using thr builings from the video game as my subject matter, as they are slightly different to those shown in the movie. I am impressed with how quickly you seem to turn these out, I have spent about 12hours in LDD so far and i'd say its 1/2 complete.

Excellent work! Everything is truly awesome!

Any chance on sharing those LDD files? Not that I intend to build any of those in real bricks (money and space prevent that) but I would really like to see closely all the little details that you've managed to squeeze in.

This has me wondering if there has been a complete list made if the pieces shown in the movie that either have never been in the color it is shown being in, or just does not exist.

In keeping with comparing the LEGO Movie buildings with existing sets, here's a comparison between the Bricksburg church and the set that provided the church's tower. It's not mentioned in the images, but the the ice cream cart in this image and the one with the "fish" building comes from 10211 Grand Emporium.

mrbradford: edgeofpanic has already released an .lxf file of Emmet's apartment building and interior for his LEGO ideas proposals: https://ideas.lego.c...s/83089/updates

I'm still trying to decide which ones I'm going to release at this point.

Woah! You did great job on recreating all this buildings. I noticed some of the similarities movie models to official sets but didn't know there are so many of them!
