How would a reboot of RoboRiders look?

On your mark, get set! We're riding on the internet!

For those who aren't aware, the RoboRiders was one of two predecessor lines to Bionicle, and was launched in 1999 as a successor to the previous (and my personal favourite) Bionicle precursor, Slizers (otherwise known as "Throwbots" in the USA).

According to Brickipedia...

Somewhere in cyberspace, there lived an un-named, advanced species, on a world divided into six regions: Dust, Ice, Lava, Stone, Power, and Swamp. A mysterious enemy arrived on their world and unleashed a virus, which spread across their world.

Story

To counter the virus, the species created wheel-shaped armour for themselves, and six motorcycle-like machines, called RoboRiders, to travel in. The RoboRiders could fire elemental blasts by launching their rider. Eventually, the RoboRiders vanquished the virus and saved their world.

In regards to build, the RoboRiders were Technic-based, using a range of specialist pieces to form some semblance of a universal system, with two main kinds chassis and a universal front axle assembly. But these days, Technic has largely done away with highly specialist parts, with only a handful of designs breaking that rule. As for action figure franchises, the CCBS has certainly taken the reigns, and likely won't be letting go ever again.

So, if RoboRiders were to return (and I'm not implying that it will), how do you think it would be done? Or rather, how would you like it to be done?

I personally imagine that, if RoboRiders were to be brought back, it would be done so as a way to introduce younger builders to Technic - rather like LEGO Juniors is used to introduce younger kids to System parts. I could see rather simplistic builds pegged together with pins and axles, with slightly more complex areas utilising gears or other mechanisms, so as to introduce such concepts in a fun and non-stressful environment.

But thinking wishfully, it'd be cool to see CCBS based Roboriders. I'm not quite sure how that'd be done, but it'd be quite interesting to see. Maybe toys akin to Transformers, that can convert from bike to humanoid robot and back again?

I dunno. Lego nowadays isn't one for original and interesting concepts (of which the RoboRiders were a great example) and I don't think that the highly specialized launcher system would work in CCBS, except if they make them parts specially for these sets and then it will be too difficult to handle for smaller kids.

An idea that I had was that they could bring brack Galidor or Dinosaurs and that could serve as an introduction to CCBS and Technic.

I'd honestly love either a CCBS Roboriders reboot or a CCBS Dinosaur line, I've always loved those build able LEGO Dinos they had back in the day. (I once caught a spider in my Mosasaur's jaws.)

I could see CCBS working for RoboRider sets if you don't expect all of them to be motorcycles. Three and four wheeled vehicles seem much more plausible to me since CCBS lends itself well to bigger builds. Maybe do motorcycles in protector sized sets and trikes/quads in larger Master or Titan sizes.

On a slightly related note, a few months ago I purchased a sealed The Boss roborider set off of eBay. Upon opening it, I discovered it only had 2 of the 3 rubber tires. Thats my luck, that one lego set has sat on some shelf for 15 years only for me to open it and its short an uncommon part Lego doesn't use anymore. I had to laugh at that.

?????????????

If Roboriders were to return, I'm going say it'd probably be technic-based on the core and use CCBS to cover up the gaps, possibly even with some slight system integration to make and some shells/attachments specially made to accommodate the wheels. They'd also be bigger, CCBS shells in their current form would make Roboriders rather wide if they were placed on the sides of a Roborider at their original average size.

Lego nowadays isn't one for original and interesting concepts

So, we have an action figure line consisting of mechanoid characters who wear magic masks and can control the elements. We have a line in which magical Elves help their newfound human friend return to Earth. We have replicas of beautiful sports cars. We have Ninjas with motorcycles fighting against legions of skeletons, snake people and cyborgs. We have anthropomorphic animals fighting to restore balance in their land. We have amazing technical replicas of real-world vehicles. We have famous superheroes and their worlds explored in unique and fun ways. We even have a feature length motion picture, following the zany adventures of an average Joe character flung head-first into worlds he never knew of.

But nope, nothing original or interesting coming from Lego these days.

Yeah, because Elves, Speed Champions and Ninjago are so Technic.

An irrelevant comment. He didn't specify an area of Lego products, just Lego in general.

Anyway, let's not discuss that. Back on topic.

Oh well sorry, I read the quoted post which appears to have "Technic" in it, which the original post doesn't. My bad.

As of RoboRiders reboot, I don't know how that would be handled. And I don't think I really would like to see this series' return. It wasn't Lego's best, I'd more likely see Slizer/Throwbots' reboot, but then again, it would be really similar to Bionicle, considering both of those lines consists (mainly) of humanoid figures.

Remake of an old and worn-out story line, which is (so far ) inferior to the original.

We have a line in which magical Elves help their newfound human friend return to Earth.

That has been done over 9000 times. Pretty much 3/4 of all childeren's fantasy is based upon that.

We have replicas of beautiful sports cars.We have amazing technical replicas of real-world vehicles

Oh, wauw. Something that hasn't been done by every toy company ever.

We have Ninjas with motorcycles fighting against legions of skeletons, snake people and cyborgs. We have anthropomorphic animals fighting to restore balance in their land.

Okay, maybe that is the only good and not rehashed thing that has come from Lego. But the anthropomorphic animals thing has also been done a gazillion times.

. We have famous superheroes and their worlds explored in unique and fun ways.

They make just sets featuring one-or 2 "famous" characters and Batman.

We even have a feature length motion picture, following the zany adventures of an average Joe character flung head-first into worlds he never knew of.

That's not funny. Not funny at all. (But I have to admit, the movie was fun. )

But nope, nothing original or interesting coming from Lego these days.

Besides Ninjago and Chima, no. Edited by Frozen Assasin

Good. Like I said, the return of Galidor would be better in my opinion, since their general concept is much more marketable to little kids and they can even make a TV-series in vein of Ninjago based on it.

Ya know, I always said that Galidor could work really well with the CCBS system. I really liked Galidor.

I'd love a Roboriders reboot, on the condition that they were primarily of Technic construction.

The Roboriders of old, though closer to Technic than its fellow action themes, still possessed few versatile components, thanks to LEGO's tendency to create overspecialized molds during the late 1990s and early 2000s, so even though the gap between Technic and Technic-based action themes was smaller pre-CCBS, the non-Titan Roboriders were still rather simplistic in terms of Technic construction, with exception to Dust.

However, under LEGO's current philosophy of creating fewer, more versatile molds, Roboriders could be a rebirth of the action-based Technic theme, avoiding the pitfall of overspecialized parts, and perhaps making it into something similar to Competition, which married basic Technic components with fantastical, unique, and enjoyable designs perfectly.

I've always found this MOC by =Bitter Cold= on Flickr a pretty great melding of ccbs and the Roborider concept, with the addition of a great transformation!

hmm, something like this, maybe?

20738095950_429c7209b5_o.png

it has about 45 pieces. the gear-wheel will be replaced by a new wheel mold, and the yellow shell on the front will have a printing or sticker that depicts roborider's face, or could also be replaced by a new head mold.
