Ecclesiastes Posted August 10, 2015 Back in 2008 -yes it’s been 7 years already- there was a small robot that stole the hearts of many. Wall-E was his name, the small waste robot with the cute eyes. Wall-E followed his friend Eve on an adventure in outer space. And now Wall-E can have new adventures in our homes, because he became the 12th Lego Ideas set! Set Information: Set Name: Wall-E Number: 21303 Theme: Lego Ideas Year: September 2015 Pieces: 677 Price: $49,99,- USD/ €49,99,- Links: https://ideas.lego.c.../1-blog/post/38 Extra Info: Number 12 of the Lego Ideas series The Box As with all the Lego Ideas boxes, there’s a lot of attention to detail. The main colour of the box is Wall-E’s colour and it even shows the dirt or rusty parts he has. Of course it also shows the LEGO logo and the logo of Disney Pixar as that’s the studio that created Wall-E. The front and back of the box are showing different poses of Wall-E. This shows that there are a lot of possibilities to pose him in. The tall sides of the box are both showing parts of the movie. One with actual movie footage and one with the LEGO version The Parts When picking up the box you can feel it’s filled up quite nicely. There’s almost no room for the bags to fly through the box. Opening the box proves that it’s indeed stuffed with bricks. It contains a total of 9 bags. While sorting, it shows that there’s a lot of variety in parts and colours. Not just a bunch of basic bricks, but a lot of plates and (modified) tiles. Which is a good thing because that means it’s not just stacking basic bricks, so that means more attention to detail. There are also quite a lot of technic parts, which you wouldn’t expect when looking at the box. And of course the best parts: Printed tiles. It always makes me happy not seeing any stickers, because this means no trouble to put them on straight. And they won’t come off or tare in time. Of course the printed parts contain the name Wall-E, but it is also a nice surprise to see a tile showing the battery level. Wall-E can go nuts on waste, because he’s fully charged! The Instructions The front of the instructions has the same image as the box and the booklet is nicely bound containing 126 pages! The first page starts with explaining who Wall-E is and what he did in the movie. Of course everyone knows his name, but I for one didn’t know or forgot what it stands for. So for everyone else who forgot: Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class. The next page shows the designer of this set. And I was kind of surprised it was built by someone who was so closely involved with the movie and even built a Lego version during production! This proves again, AFOLs are everywhere. The last page shows all the moving abilities the model has. Building Step 1-7 Just starting, but it already shows snotting and a technic pin for the tracks. Step 8-14 In seven new steps there’s just little progress. There’s a hatch now which means playability! Step 15-31 The official model is not completely square. They made a crack with slopes to achieve a slightly off-square look. Step 32-42 His body starts coming together and the beginning of the neck is added. Step 47 Wall-E’s arms can move and you can see how it works. The pin connector hole just slides over a technic axle. Step 48-50 The body is almost complete here, just in need of a few tiles. Step 51-58 Now the body is complete and all the technic pins are in place to put the tracks on. Step 69-89 When looking at the box, you don’t expect that many technic parts, but as you can see, the frame that holds the tracks is completely technic and it looks really good. Step 90-91 And ready to drive! He’s even got a friend to join him. The cockroach. Which has a clever design as it should be tiny. Step 92-108 And the neck is finished. The neck turns out to be the weakest part of the model when finished. The pin that’s connected to the liftarm just sits too loose. And the hinge bricks aren’t capable of keeping the head up in most positions. Step 109-154 Both the eyes take up more than a quarter of the whole instructions booklet, which is no surprise as they contain a lot of pieces and a lot of SNOT. Step 155-177 The arms come last. And especially the hands are well made. They look like a replica of Wall-E’s hands in the movie. Step 178 Wall-E is done. Afther building is done, there's just a few basic spare pieces left. Finished Moving the eyes. Moving the arms. Rating: Design: 8/10 – The model is instantly recognizable as Wall-E. The right proportions and a lot of attention to detail. Although it does look like Wall-E just came rolling out of the factory because his paint job looks brand new, which is inconsistent with the movie. Also the head is a bit too heavy. When picking up the model, the head starts spinning on the technic pin and the hinge bricks aren’t able to hold the head up in several positions Parts: 8/10 – A great diversity in colours and parts and of course three exclusive printed tiles! Building: 6/10 – The box states 12+, but I’m convinced my neighbour’s eight year old should be able to make this model as well. Especially because the steps are quite small. Playability: 6/10 – This is clearly a set to put on display. It’s posable in a lot of different ways and you can drive it around, but again, when you do the head starts having a mind of its own. Price: 10/10 – 49,99,- USD/ €49,99,- is a very fair price considering the amount of pieces. Overall conclusion: 8/10 – While the neck is a weak point of this model it still looks amazing. It looks alot like the original from the movie and can move in a lot of different ways. So yes this is certainly a Lego IDEAS must have.
WhiteFang Posted August 16, 2015 Ecclesiastes, thank you for this wonderful review. It will be a welcoming set for Wall E fans and is deadly accurate to what I expect it to be. It will make a fine distinguish icon for Disney fans.
Amazing Bricks Posted August 16, 2015 Thanks for the review! It looks so much better in person, this has to be one of the better ideas sets.
Robert8 Posted August 16, 2015 Best LEGO Ideas set so far... A 6 for Playability is kinda low, IMO Thanks for the review
Graham Gidman Posted August 16, 2015 Most definitely the best LEGO Ideas set so far. I absolutely love this character and am very glad that the set does him justice.
Emmi Posted August 16, 2015 Without a doubt this is the best LEGO Ideas set to date. I can't wait to build this and hold it in my hands September 1st. I'd love to have more of this in the future - characters from other Disney Pixar movies would be great!

(1)Stein Posted August 16, 2015 A great review, thanks! I think Wall•E is one of the best idea sets. And I hope that TLG is releasing more of these quality sets! Now the lonely guy just needs an EVE!
Ceroknight Posted August 16, 2015 Thank you for the review! I definitely agree about this being a must have
Jern92 Posted August 16, 2015 I want this so bad. But I still have the Ferris Wheel and The Big Bang Theory on my wish list, and no money to fulfill it with.
Exetrius Posted August 16, 2015 Great review, very helpful! This set looks just amazing!
Erik Leppen Posted August 16, 2015 Great review. Thanks for the pictures and the explanations. I do wonder why the two #3 axles are yellow though. Any thoughts on that?
cesbrick Posted August 16, 2015 A must have for sure! Thanks Ecc, for the wonderful review. Can't wait to have it!
Lordofdragonss Posted August 16, 2015 (edited) Sadly the neck is build in the wrong way (should be closer to the back) and you can't do this: The head is a little too big and he can't retrack the wheels. Still it's an amazing looking model, and I really would love to get one! Edited August 16, 2015 by Lordofdragonss

therealjustin Posted August 16, 2015 (edited) My favorite Ideas set so far besides Curiosity! I think the eyes are a bit off though and I think there are better solutions but that is an easy fix. Thanks for the review! Edited August 16, 2015 by therealjustin
lightningtiger Posted August 16, 2015 Excellent review of an awesome set......if my money allows it, this will become my third Ideas purchase.
Younge Posted August 16, 2015 I definitely want one of these, but I'll have to wait for what the Australian pricing (tax!!!) is.
Zzz Posted August 16, 2015 Thanks for the great review! This might be my 2nd ideas purchase after the Ghostbusters set. And while it's not as spot on as the Ecto-1 and I wouldn't call myself a huge Wall-E fan, it somehow appeals to me. Still, with all the SW sets and interesting January sets coming out, it might be a tough decision what to get in the next 6 months.
Markalus Posted August 16, 2015 (edited) Great review! I love this set so much and I think it's cool that the original Ideas design is from the lead animator on the movie. I agree with what the reviewer said about the shiny newness of the model not being entirely accurate. I only wish Lego would do "aged" or non-monochromatic pieces. I dare not mention a rival brand here but there is one Canadian company does it very well to create authenticity in their collector sets ; ) I definitely want one of these, but I'll have to wait for what the Australian pricing (tax!!!) is. I suspect Aussie pricing will be in the $70-$80 AUD range...still extremely good value IMO. Shipping will be the killer though unless the $200 AUD free shipping threshold is reached. VBBN Posted August 16, 2015 Great review Ecc, and a great looking set as well. I agree with other's sentiments that is is one of the best (if not the best) Ideas set so far. Although that is an awful way to attach the head.
mzzl88 Posted August 16, 2015 Thanks for the review, the set looks really good and as said earlier in the comments I'm also very curious about the TLG to continue this kind of sets made...
