Chess Posted March 10, 2015 Hi there! I'm looking for a train set to supplement my 'Cargo and Supply route to the Arctic' theme. I have no experience what-so-ever thus I would like to educate myself on the matter of cargo trains. Modern and as complete as possible is what I was looking for. No preference of power functions. What set would be called 'interesting to look at'?
dr_spock Posted March 10, 2015 Are you looking for a particular color scheme to match the Artic orange sets? The easiest is to get the current 60052 cargo train set since it is readily available and you're not paying the premium for discontinued sets. Ther eis another cargo train supposedly coming out this year too.
Chess Posted March 10, 2015 No, the colours don't really matter :). Just would like to go Train depot-> small airfield-> Arctic airfield-> Arctic base. All in northern theme with ice and snow.... Have you seen ' Ice Road Truckers? ' . Somewhat like that but with trains, if you follow my train of thought/ I can't find any complaints of the current cargo train set, any complaints you guys know about? :) I like trains... /sheldon cooper
dr_spock Posted March 10, 2015 The current 60052 cargo train may be good for that. It has a "depot" with gantry crane and forklift to load and unload stuff. You can modify the cars to carry other types of supply besides the cow. I think it is good starting point to build upon.
Breakdown Posted March 10, 2015 Horizon Express modded to look like a cargo train would look pretty fantastic. It would definitely carry the whole orange - black colour scheme very well. Just be advised that the train does NOT contain a motor or track so there's some extra costs associated with it.
Chess Posted March 10, 2015 Already got 2 HE's ;). First Lego I bought in 16 years :D
Richfilth Posted March 10, 2015 For complete sets, I think 4512 has the best Cargo locomotive look, although it's ten years old now. For accessory wagons, the 10170 wagons are pretty cool for cargo, but there's also the older 4549 Double-stack cargo wagon, which is fairly cheap to build if you want more than one. If you want a Train depot, the 4512 had a green accessory crane 4514, and there is also Cargo depot 4555 which has an additional cargo wagon too. Wagon 4533 is a working snow blower
Breakdown Posted March 10, 2015 Already got 2 HE's ;). First Lego I bought in 16 years :D So . . . . buy a third and convert to cargo. Arctic stuff is just so orange-centric, would go well. Plus I would love to see someone's interpretation of HE in cargo.
davidmull Posted March 10, 2015 Iv recently got into trains and I have to say I prefer 7939 over 60052. Maybe it's the more euro look :)
Chess Posted March 10, 2015 Ok... It seems I'll need them all! :D No seriously, with the exception that I want diesels ( thanks though, David ) I can't choose... all mentioned trains are awesome Not even thinking about the maersk train I just discovered! Ps. Why I want diesel: electric trains require a high voltage line, which is quite sensitive to the cold ( snaps easily, and the ice damages the pantograph: it looks like they're welding! ). Diesels would be the smarter choice if you have a refueling station.

The red diesel locomotive will be European style versus North American for the current blue cargo train set. You can look at brickset.com for pictures of train sets and see which ones appeal to you. Chess Posted March 11, 2015 dr_spock, You might have a point. I'll wait for some reviews first. Besides that, I have a house to rebuild. A real-life one that is. So funds might get somewhat scarcer ;).
