Dragon Lands: The Faerie Wars

Howdy guys!

This is the topic for my "third wave" of (Not) LEGO Dragon Lands. (Not) LEGO Dragon Lands is a MOC series that's meant to be like a new theme of LEGO fantasy; as such, the creations below are designed to be as stable, functional, and reasonably-sized as real LEGO sets. The creations I make in my "themes" (I've done several like this in the past) are designed to complement each other, and be highly playable as a cohesive theme.

Like I said, this is the topic for the imaginary third wave of Dragon Lands (wave one can be seen in-depth here, wave two here, and wave 4 here). This arc is a lot of fun for me because it's a prequel story to the first two. The orc-like Ustokal race and the elegant woodland Faeries - allies of the humans of the Kingdom of Ardun - are in the throes of an age-old war where sorcerers, dragons, and magical artifacts become valuable weapons! For those of you who remember the first two waves, this is all happening a generation before them... Some of the oldest characters, like Althior, Scallow, and Rothut are visibly younger in this story (that was fun to play with!); the Ustokal Vorash is still a prince; the legendary fire drake Radgha - who appeared as an undead dragon in wave two - is still alive.

In making this wave, I wanted to implement more - and more diverse - play features in the dragons themselves. You'll see dragons with flapping wings, striking heads, and more; all of that was a real blast to design, on top of creating a few new dragon characters. I've also enjoyed building other types of fantastical creatures this time around, like the Golem in 64030, and exploring new locations and structures. The more I build in the Dragon Lands vein, the more easily it comes; I've just been having a blast with the project so far. Less than half is currently completed as of the time of my posting this topic, but I figured it'd be cool to share some of what I've made so far.

All images link to their larger versions on my Flickr. Newest content will be added to the top - keep checking back for more sets as they're published!

This is a really great series. I looked at the previous two waves when they were first posted, and I can honestly say that you never seem to run out of good ideas. Perhaps some of these sets should be put on Ideas, like Minas Tirith? I look forward to more.

My new favorite builder. i'm gonna spend all day on your stream, is that real lego cloth you use for the wings?

Do you have building instructions for any of the Dragon Lands sets?

I can answer that because I asked the same question of the ealier waves, the answer is no; Nuju builds in bricks.

However I did reverse engineer most of The Siege Of Issiad into LDD in order to build it. There are probably some minor differences and I haven't yet built the catapult nor assembled the minifigures in LDD. I could make it available if Nuju doesn't object. Having done that I can say that Nuju's sets are buildable and very close to TLG design guidelines. This bodes well from the perspective of Nuju's Minas Tirith Ideas project passing through the design review smoothly, it will be down to whether TLG want a last hurrah for the LOTR line and whether their license agreement will allow them.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, my forte is with minifigs, not so much with building. Could I possibly get the .LXFs from you that you have?

Why are you not a lego designer? Why?

My question exactly. These sets and story are breath taking.

I've never really planned to put any of my Dragon Lands creations on LEGO Ideas; I don't think they'd fare very well, being non-licensed builds, and I don't think they present as strongly as potential products without their fellow sets. I don't feel terribly compelled to see them become real LEGO kits, but I'm flattered you consider them worthy of that consideration!

My new favorite builder. i'm gonna spend all day on your stream, is that real lego cloth you use for the wings?

No, the wings on my dragons aren't LEGO cloth. I buy 1/4th yards of elastic fabrics (simple, mostly-cotton knits, if I remember right) in colors I want from a craft store, and then cut them to specific sizes based on the wing frames I've constructed.

I can answer that because I asked the same question of the ealier waves, the answer is no; Nuju builds in bricks.

The Cook is right: I don't have instructions for my Dragon Lands stuff. If sufficient demand surfaced, I might consider making some; however, since I've got next to no experience in LDD or programs that'd easily enable that sort of thing, it'd be a big undertaking for me. Also, not all of my older Dragon Lands sets are still extant, since I have to scrap much of what I build to use the same pieces on the next wave. (The central models of 64018, 64019, and 64020 from the first wave are exceptions to this, because I really adored how they came out and I wanted to keep them together.)

I've considered making pictorial instructions for my basic dragon frames a few times; those would be really easy for me to put together, compared to other instructions. Would you guys ever want to see something like that, or is there only interest in set-specific instructions?

Also, The Cook, feel free to make the 64019 LDD model available to people. I know I'd love to see how close you got to the real thing!

The LDD can be found on the following MOCPage's Page.

  • The siege engine is not complete.
  • There are no minifigs
  • I may have misrepresented the colours, particularly some of the metallics.
  • Some of the interior details not visible from the photo's might differ from Nuju's original.
  • Not all printed parts are available in LDD, particularly the main slopes that come from 8877 Vladek's Dark Fortress

Having built this I can say that Nuju's building style is very close to TLG's building style. If this were to go through TLG's design process there would be changes, principally the manufacturing department would be asking the design department to limit the number of unique elements in the design. As an example; 1x4 arches occur in Nuju's original build in 4 different colours, reducing them to just 2 colours would reduce the unique element count with minimal impact on the aesthetics of the design.

Without the Siege Engine and Minifigs it was coming in at 1200 bricks; compare that with say MMV at 1200 which includes Minifigures. If it were produced for real it would be in the $150 dollar range if not higher; therefore I would expect the marketing department to be asking whether one of the wall or tower segments could be left out in order to bring it back towards the $120 sweet spot for typical flagship sets in a theme.

If you're interested in building it you'll need at least:

Nuju will be able to comment which sets he utilised from his collection, assuming that the parts weren't sourced through Bricklink or PAB.

Yesh, more Dragon Lands goodness! Taking the fey folk into the equation is a great and very original move - and gives you a whole new color palette to work with.

The brick-built golem is an awesome start!

Glad to see this theme continue! Mayhaps they'll discover some dwarves during these Faerie Wars?

That golem is something else... lots of fun. Love the figures, too, and the use of the Heroica microfig as a little summoning totem!

It looks so good! And accurate. Great work, The Cook!

Well, I wasn't counting elements back when I made that, but I'm not terribly surprised to hear it's got more parts than I expected. Almost all of my pieces I get from kits, rather than Bricklink. I can confirm that:

  • The slopes are from VDF and other sets from that wave
  • 4183 is where I got all those plates
  • 7187 is also a set I own and took pieces from
  • HP castles are great - most of my tan parts are from there. The newest one, 4842, was particularly useful pieces-wise.
  • Fight for the Dagger is where I got the dome, and also the red awning in the market inside the wall
  • Chima sets, and Ninjago too, provide me with some of my favorite parts
  • The sais are actually dark pearl grey

Yesh, more Dragon Lands goodness! Taking the fey folk into the equation is a great and very original move - and gives you a whole new color palette to work with.

I hope so! I've not started on any sets that have dominantly Faerie structures/machines, but I look forward to playing with their aesthetic.

Glad to see this theme continue! Mayhaps they'll discover some dwarves during these Faerie Wars?

No dwarves on the roster this time around, but that's a great idea for a future wave!

Thanks, everyone. New set added to the first post - 64032 Frost Dragon. Go take a look!

Ah, this thread is still alive!

Nice work, Nuju. The frost dragon looks nice and unique, different from your other dragons. The placement of the horns is particularly aesthiticly pleasing.

A little belated - I had to wait on the right color wing parts to arrive in the mail - but the actual smallest set of the wave, 64029 War Bee, has been added to the first post! Go take a look!

Also, for those of you interested (just click the image for more info):
