MiloNelsiano Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 As my Smithy waits for parts, I've been trying to build some tools to go with it. I'm not very good at building such things and am really struggling to get the scale right on some of them. Any and all help is appreciated! I'll start with my bellows and forge as I'm most satisfied with them compared to the rest. Since taking these photos I changed the two brown 1x2 plates to tan as I feel this is a more realistic look. While I think the forge serves its purpose I feel like it could still use something else. Next I made a couple anvils. The smaller I planned to use as the shop's sign and the second as the actual anvil. However after making it it seems enormous and I really don't think it's even close to scale. After I decided it was too big I decided to check how the smaller one scaled. While it looks much closer to me it still seems a little small. Anyone have thoughts on this? Last I have a grinding wheel. It seems way too big currently. I this I can probably come up with a little smaller design (this was loosely based from Skyrim) but I'm also not entirely sure if the piece I used as the grinding stone is the best option or not. As I said I appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Thanks! Quote
Asphalt Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I really like these. I can't wait to see the environment you put them in. Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 These are really cool! Looking forward to seeing this develop into the smithy! Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Looks good. For the anvil I would suggest making the top section three studs long and tiling it. Quote
mccoyed Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) Great work. I'd love to see more stuff like this on GoH, actually. It can be hard to pick up smaller ideas in larger builds and something like an anvil can get overlooked in a massive layout or even with structures and figs that draw the eye more. This sort of smaller work should have a thread of its own, stickied, for everyone to share their techniques and designs on the "hardware" of medieval life. I know there's stuff like that out there, but anyway my $0.02. :P I managed a smaller grindstone in one of my Age of Mitgardia builds. Edited September 7, 2014 by mccoyed Quote
LordDan Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 check out the anvil in the orc forge set( sorry I don't have a picture or link to it) it's a double sided snot piece with a cheese slope on either side. Quote
mrcp6d Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 LEGO has actually put out some pretty good minifig-scale anvils in a few of the official sets. You might some of those out. Like LordDan said, I think the usually use some sort of SNOT piece. Great work. I'd love to see more stuff like this on GoH, actually. Gunman Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 The small anvil is cute :) Nicely made! Quote
vitreolum Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Nice, really like the sharpening tool. Quote
Bregir Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 And I third it! I personally feel challenged by these details. But yours are really good, I think. Both the small and big anvil are well-designed and a blacksmith probably needs more than one size :) Quote
Thomas of Tortuga Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Very nice work on the bellows. For the anvil, you could use a Travis brick (1x1 with studs on all sides) and put a cone on one side and a cheese slope on the other. I think that's scaled correctly. Quote
mccoyed Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I'll send Rogue Angel a message and see if he thinks the stickied section is already too busy for some kind of "Setting Details" type of thread where we can share ideas and techniques for stuff like this. Quote
MiloNelsiano Posted September 8, 2014 Author Posted September 8, 2014 Thank you all for the kind comments! Several have suggested trying the anvils from different Lego sets. Before starting in these I looked there for inspiration. I wanted to create something of my own if possible with these as a possible second option. While I think the bigger one I made is too big and I don't think I'll use it, I may play with the idea of multiple anvils, possibly with the ones mentioned by you guys. Mccoyed, I like your grindstone, and might play with that design a bit. And an index for this would be really nice, as I'm always looking for ideas on little things. I think the pirate section has a furniture building guide with some really amazing designs in it within their pinned index. Thanks again for all the compliments and advice! Quote
de Gothia Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 That bellow is such a win for me! Have to use that in my own mocs! Nice to see some wips of your tools! Quote
Gideon Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Nice objects, I agree that these kind of details often get lost in larger builds and don't get the attention/discussion they deserve. I really like the bellows, that's a very clever technique (the engineer in me is slways keeping me from thinking in those terms of half-attached pieces when I am building...). The grinding stone would probably be improved by adding a round tile with hole on the studded side (and turn this side towards the camera when using it in a build). I also think that wooden parts (like the sides of the frame for the grinding wheel) are better done studless with tiles. Quote
mccoyed Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Maybe we should take this opportunity to throw up some builds, variations, and ideas of our own in this thread. Quote
MiloNelsiano Posted September 10, 2014 Author Posted September 10, 2014 Quote button is still not working. I really don't understand my Computer sometimes...de Gothia, you're more than welcome to use it, please do so! Gideon, I will have to Keep an eye out for a round plate with a hole in a suitable Color. As for the Wood pieces, they will all be replaced by tiles whenever i can order some more (I go through reddish brown tiles way too fast, and most of mine are in another country currently). As for posting other ideas for similar tools, please do! I'd be very eager to see others. Quote
Hammerhand Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Ah, nice tools! I especially like the bellows, clever idea with those! I think I would put a 1x4 tile on top though, instead of the plate, but that's just me. Quote

I think I would put a 1x4 tile on top though, instead of the plate, but that's just me. There will be a plate there eventually, along with on the grinding stone. I never have enough reddish brown tiles though so it will have to wait until my next bricklink order. Quote
Jorrith Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 i'd say you are doing great on accesorizing the smithy! The large anvil is indeed a bit oversized, but the small one is spot on, though a bit small-ish. I think you will nail it though, those bellows are perfect! Quote
