Assembled this train yesterday and can't get it to work. Both green lights come on and one flickers to show it's the correct frequency, but nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Hmmm.

Make sure the cables are all properly connected to the IR receiver and Battery Box. Make sure you have checked all your batteries are fresh. Try it on and off the track. Also check that the receiver is on the right channel as the remote (#1 mistake by me  ). Also if you have more battery boxes/motors/receivers you can test different combos to see which piece isn't working/ faulty.

Hope any of these suggestions work!

You must check to have selected the same channel on the PF receiver and on the remote. On the remote you have to use the right color speed regulator (red or blu) because the motor is connected only to one color of the PF receiver.

You can also verify if the motor is ok connecting directly the motor to the battery box (and pressing the power on)

He now wants another train for Xmas to go on the track, I can use two can't i? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance x

Of course you can use two, you can in fact use up to eight trains, but I don't think that is manageable without computer control :). B.t.w. welcome to Eurobricks, why don't you also introduce yourself!

Yep, i have two remotes connected to eachother to control up to 4 trains simultaniously, but even that becomes a bit chaotic controlling all four. But two trains are no problem at all on one remote.
