Hello

I bought a NXT brick from eBay which was described as "very good condition" but what the seller conveniently forgot to mention was that they had at some point left batteries in the unit too long and they leaked and so the battery contacts and the compartment are covered in battery goo  The unit still works, just about.

What is a good technique and/or product for cleaning the box?

Can the contacts in a NXT unit be replaced? I think one or two of them might be too corroded to clean.

I would send them back to LEGO, see what they do with it, normally they have very good support! My brother in law had a Duplo train that had fallen into a bucket of water, LEGO replaced it (and he was honest enough to mention exactly what happened).

You can clean the goo with a cloth, lint free is best. Then rub the contacts with a fine grit wet and dry paper. It's not easy but it will work. Jopiek has a good idea, you never know you may get a new unit.

I bought a two 8043's from a seller on eBay but like EvilTwin, one of them had a battery box full of goo from leaking batteries.

One phone call to Lego Customer Services saw them send me a new battery box no questions asked, they didn't even ask me to send them the 'dud' one.

Brilliant service.

Good for you Grum64, I've been asked to return my 41999 copy to replace dead right out-of-the-box battery box.
