KateB Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I know real flowers have raised centers, but the center tends to be a different color than the flower itself so the little itty part of the green stem that pokes through the hole was the raised part for me when studs down. I'm confused now, which is not difficult for me! I meant that the center isn't really raised on real flowers, the petals should be the raised part otherwise it looks kinda weird. But good point about the green stem :-) I can't believe I'm having this conversation! I fear I am procrastinating as I'm supposed to be typing up my minutes at work right now and I HATE minutes!! Both! Seriously, I used to have the studs up, then I found some sets with them down, then changed mine to suit, as I thought I was doing it wrong, then spotted some sets with them up and thought damn it, I'll have it both ways! Sounds like Lego anarchy to me Quote
Legogal Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 This is a very, very serious topic! That said, I use them both ways to vary the looks of flowers because let's face it, LEGO flowers were extremely dull looking until our Friends appeared. And I never like to mix flower colors being a purist in my real garden, too, which has about 90 percent white flowers because they show up best in low light. The ones that are not white usually began as white and mutated over time OR hubby pulled a very dumb move and planted nonwhite flowers in my garden. My mind gets agitated if a garden has too many colors of flowers. Hmmmm...could this be a test for some weird mental disease?!!! Quote
Dr Leg O Brick Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) Yep, I'm an anarchist! Next my flag poles will be flapping the wrong way, my greens, greys and reds won't match, and people will be driving on the proper side of the road! Edited May 29, 2014 by Dr Leg O Brick Quote
pbat Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 My mind gets agitated if a garden has too many colors of flowers. Hmmmm...could this be a test for some weird mental disease?!!! White is total reflection, as it reflects back the full spectrum of the light. A large surface of white is a strain to look at, as white is no real colour but rather a shade of any colour. White is associated with purity. Uncompromising, clean, hygienic and sterile are some attributes commonly associated with white. White must be contrasted by some other colour to be experienced as pleasant; all-white rooms are considered generous and spacious, but in a cold and empty way. People wearing white clothes or uniforms are unconsciously perceived as noble, trustworthy and professional, e.g. nurses and doctors. People stating white as their favourite colour often tend to be neat, tidy, reserved, aloof, afraid of changes, maybe even latent xenophobic, in any case rather elitist. Sometimes they suffer from compulsive behaviour such as obsessive washing and cleaning or avoiding contaminants. Obsessions with exactness and symmetry are also quite frequent. I'm far from accusing you to suffer from OCD, but maybe some more colourful flowers were a good idea: Definitely studs down for me. When you look at a real flower which is higher, the middle of the flower or the petals? Case closed ;-) Almost every flower has an elevated centre. By having a look at those tulips it's hard to believe that studs down could be right, isn't it? Quote
Artanis I Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 By having a look at those tulips it's hard to believe that studs down could be right, isn't it? They are wider at the top than at the bottom, are they not? Quote
KateB Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 They are wider at the top than at the bottom, are they not? You took the words right out of my mouth ;-) (and now I'm mentally singing that darn Meatloaf song!) Quote
Covi Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 They are wider at the top than at the bottom, are they not? Spot on!!! Quote
Wodanis Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I've always placed the flowers in the official way, 'studs up'. For me studs up was obvious because it allows you to build on top of the flower. Simple thought. Quote

Lord Tyrus Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Oh, I must be a rebel too. I put them that way too... But I thought I was an imperial? Quote
Sebeus I Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 This is a surprisingly interesting discussion, I guess I'm a rebel too... Although I'm pretty sure I must have followed the instructions long ago when I put the studs down . Quote
gifinim Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I don't think I've ever seriously though about it before but I'm a studs up fan. If there are a lot of flowers close together I'll put some studs down or leave the flower head off completely to vary the effect. I'm trying to remember how my two children do theirs now... This is a wonderful diversion from work on a Monday Quote

emilstorm Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 Why is it that this thread, and this thread alone, always comes up as unread when i scroll through the forum? Highly annoying since it is such an important topic that you just can't help clicking on it Quote
Venunder Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 For me, it is either way. It depends on which flower you are trying to represent. Daisies and most other flowers, stud up. Lillies stud down. Maybe some roses too. Bell shaped flowers will need an extra stud added to them. The white, 1 stud flat round, with hole, works quite well for white bell flowers. Quote

Highly annoying since it is such an important topic that you just can't help clicking on it I've been wondering the same - and I suspect the answer is as simple as this: The board interprets any new vote in the poll as a new post. Which seems pretty unnecessary - I wonder if there's a way for the moderators to turn off that function? Quote

spzero Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Studs down for years but now I'm older I do mix it up a bit too P.S. Which mould variation are we discussing the newer mold has petals molded in and therefore to enable this to be seen by the minifigs they HAVE TO BE to be STUDS DOWN Edited June 3, 2014 by spzero Quote
BirdOPrey5 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 P.S. Which mould variation are we discussing the newer mold has petals molded in and therefore to enable this to be seen by the minifigs they HAVE TO BE to be STUDS DOWN The classic flowers that appear in the wide image at the top of the page, Quote
spzero Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Yes, but there is are 3 mold variations of the classic flower, (its not noted on bricklink or Brickowl or anywhere else that I have looked) the ones on the top of this page could be any, 1) the early one's had no mold marks at all and so would look fine either way around 2) one of the modern one's has LEGO copyright logo and a 3 digit mold stamp (on the non stud side) these should go stud up, 3) then some of the modern ones have mold lines to give the petals a more defined look this is molded on the non stud side, these are obviously intended to go studs down. So we have a definitive answer, as far as I am concerned, I should probably photograph the 3 variations will try if I get chance in the morning Edited June 4, 2014 by spzero Quote
