Does anybody build with those old light grey gears, old pneumatic cylinders, classic 12v motors and those good old blocky solid tires? I don't see a lot of it in here, so I am just wondering.

The reason I am asking is that I have a whole bunch of it just taking up space, and would rather trade it all off than go trough the trouble of registering it all at brick link to sell a part here and a part there.

I'm using old school studded beams in my current project to achieve a particular look while maintaining rigidity. Also using a number of old style pneumatics but only because I wanted the clear cylinders, it could have been the new style. All PF and NXT motors, no old 9V here. Mainly because the PF are so compact I guess.

As for the old gears, that depends solely on where it has to go and what it has to do :) I don't use the old style small bevel gears anymore. The newer ones are so much better.

Looking at a classic build of you own?

Whoops completely missed second part of OP.

How much you got?

I am going to have a closer look later at exactly how much I have accumulated. I am keeping the beams, plates, axles and stuff I can use in my 'regular' builds. I guess this post is kind of redundant... I will be back :)

Hej Emil

That's the ONLY stuff I use, all that fancy odd number liftarm stuff is not for me. I do have loads of it, maybe we should trade seeing I'm in DK as well ;)

Cheers,

I had tons of the old stuff and thought it was great, until i got TONS of the new stuff. Crowkillers responded to me on on youtube once and said something like: "Yea, the new stuff is kind of hard, and it helps to have a lot of it. But i would never go back to the old stuff" I completely agree. The new stuff is amazing. At least in terms of strength. I'm afraid to use my old stuff because i'm sure it will break :(

I'm the opposite .. bought a LOT of modern sets, but I just don't find any joy in building with that. Since I've been lucky enough to grab most of the newer flagships at hefty discount, I now make a rather decent profit at Bricklink

I use a fair amount of ordinary bricks'n'plates and whatnot to shape the look/functions of the model and that is important to me. I really do not dig that modern panel/flexy thing look. It reminds of a defleshed Terminator

Also, I can't stand bluish greys .. but hey, that means there'll be enough LEGO to all of us

The old gears interchangeably with the new ones. If you are talking about the really old single acting pneumatic cylinders, they are not used much but I think that is mostly due to scarcity. M_longer used the red ones for his Sandvik mining trucks. Dennis Bosman uses the old blocky tires for all his trucks.

If you are looking to unload old parts, I don't think you'll have any problem finding a buyer here.

Thanks for all the quick responses, the technic forum seems to be very active:)

I think I have found one already :)

The simple answer is yes. Though I rarely use the older motors at the moment they will become useful later. I can't imagine getting rid of any of my 90's technic.

I like the 64mm cylinders, but the whole first generation of pneumatics is rather week. And you need to fit in the distributer block also. The long pump is pretty powerfull though

I mostly use those old foam tires with the 20x30 being my favourite, the 2995s (mini Power Pullers) are also nice

The old 9V system is vastly more flexible and there are many more parts, like elektrical plates and flashing lights that suit my needs. I don't make RC (got Tamiya for that) or moving vehicles ('cept trains) so I don't need powerfull motors

And I like to build everything to Tech-fig scale

I totally forgot about the figures, I have 3 or 4 of those buried somewhere :) I never quite understood why Lego stopped with those.

Now, that is proper Technic LEGO

Well done, Sir

Edit : Ha, first thing I did back then was to put proper lights on my 8846

I LOVE those old parts, you were not precise, but if you talk about technic bricks and old 24x43 tires, I am that guy! :)

Yes, I do use the old stuff. Mostly late eighties and newer as I don't have anything older.

I always mix and match new and old as needed. The older and the new parts have different pros and cons, and you can always get a better result by mixing up as needed. That is one of the things I love about technic. A part will almost always have an advantage in a given situation, even if we get a new one. One example is the diffs (new 3 stud 90 degree connection, old 4 stud linear connection), another the different kind of pins (the old black is great for stuff that need to be fitted hard, while the new black is a lot easier to disconnect and move), old studded beams a great for rigidity, while new beams are good for compact 3D construction...

I seldom use the old 12 V stuff though, as I have standardized on 9 V. The old pneumatic how ever is great. You have got the long cylinder, and using the distribution block with its one way valves you can make a water pump without having to put any pumps or cylinders in water... So, as I said, I mix and match for what I need.

PS: I'm not in here as often as I would like do to time constrains. If you got any questions on use of old Technic Lego please don't hesitate to PM me.

Or we could keep it here for the benefit of all those young whippersnappers

Nice to see some other folkes who like this stuff

I still use my older stuff. There are times when you will be glad of an older part - toothed toggle joint, or 24x43 wheels. Plates and studded beams will always be needed in my collection.

I love the older stuff! My chassis from now on will include a combination of both old and new.:tongue:

As stated above, mixing the old and new to get the best from both is the only way to get the strongest yet lightest chassis and nice curves for body work.
