emilstorm Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Hello EB, I use my wife's old 2008 iMac sometimes, but I have a huge problem. When I try to make an underscore it won't, in stead it reads what I have written (in a creepy voice). It was kind of fun the first couple of times, but now I am kind of sick of it, and I need that underscore to type in my email adress. I have tried google but Couldn't find anything useful. Am I missing something embarrassingly obvious or is my wife's Mac possessed by an evil synthetic robot voiced underscore demon? Quote
Darkdragon Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Is this only happening in the web browser? If so, what browser is it using? Quote
emilstorm Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 I have only used underscore in the browser, it's safari. I am not near it right now so I can't try it out. Quote
emilstorm Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 I have just tried in word, still just Mr. Robotvoice... Quote
Brickdoctor Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Open System Preferences; click "Dictation and Speech"; click the tab "Text to Speech". Is the option, "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" checked, and, if so, what is the key combination set to? There's a button there to change the key. I can't imagine why someone would change it to "Shift+-" (The default on my computer appears to be "Option+Esc", and it's kind of amusing that OS X lets you change it to a combination that actually types a character.), but I just tried it, and it works for me. (And if you're typing in a text field, you don't have to select any text; it just starts reading what's been typed.) Quote
emilstorm Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 Dear Mr. Brickdoctor, i tried your suggestion, now it just makes a weird "dong" noise when i want my beloved underscore. And the key combination was "Shift+/" before i changed it. Thank you for your help though, i think my there is something up with the keyboard configuration... Some thing to work with I guess Quote
Brickdoctor Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 "Shift+/" is even funnier; if someone set it to that, he wouldn't have been able to type question marks. Quote
emilstorm Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 Apparently this person knew it all, no need for questions... It does sound a lot like my wife :) Quote
emilstorm Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 For all those people out there that have not been able to sleep, because of my Mac trouble: It's ok now! After a couple of days it just started working again ______________________! Quote
