Hello,

I'm just trying to exit my dark ages, after starting to buy Lego (duplo) sets for my kids.

I like castle/medieval builds, and looking for inspiration, I've found GoH.

I'd like to join, but before doing it, I'd like to check with you if totally newbie builders (I'm just starting with my first MOCs) are welcome.

I just don't stop seeing your wonderful creations, and I'm not sure if you aren't expecting a minimum level from new members.

Welcome to the AFOL world and GoH in particular!

As an important goal with GoH is to improve our building skills, if you are ready to receive some constructive criticism of your builds and their presentation this is probably the best place to be :classic: Many of the builders here have improved tremendously during their time in GoH (myself included).

So to join you just create a sigfig (signature figure) and post it along with some backstory of the figure in the main thread of the guild you want to join. As to which guild you want to join I would suggest a new builder to choose guild based on your collection and the style you want to build in.

Gideon has pretty much hit everything. I just want to epmhasize that there is absolutely no problem with beginning builders here. Welcome to GoH!

Thanks for your answers. I have absolutely no problems with (constructive) criticism. IMO, that is one of the main reasons for sharing any creative effort, so you can improve.

Again, thanks, and expect to hear from me soon in one of the guilds :)

It's funny you ask because so many of the amazing builders in GoH were beginners at the start and the improvements on the builds has been outstanding. Even some that have MOC Expert tags now, when GoH started they were just learning the skills to build nice castle mocs. All the challenges are a great way to keep one-upping yourself!

And now the advertisement campaign from various members promoting their guild starts

In order to avoid advertisement efforts, so the various members can focus in their MOCs :D I'll almost certain that I'll join Mitgardia. My collection is pretty limited, coming from buying some Hobbit sets, so that discards some of the guilds. Also, I find very interesting the AoM contest, that allows going at your own pace, and has some variety in the builds proposed.

So, first of all Welcome to GoH! We definitely encourage novice builders here in Historica! For an example:

I built this as my first build out of the dark ages. About 7 weeks later I joined GoH, and the builds from the people here, along with the advice and constructive criticism have helped me tremendously in my efforts as a builder. Every build I create is better than the last. I totally attribute that to this community that I was lucky enough to find here. So, build away, enjoy the sights and have fun!

See, we are so glorious we don`t even need to advertise anymore these days.

But ofc novices are welcome, they have me around after all ;-) (I`m just out of a 20 year dark age myself since november or such, the half year before that I`ve only been building out of the box sets as well)

I have just started up with Castle MOC stuff myself. Went to Lands Of Classic Castle but am now thinking about moving here. People seem nice and lots of great builders here. Good luck choosing a Guild by the way. I am still shopping around and these guys love a sale!

I haven't been here long myself but I think you'll find a very supportive and constructive crew around here. I've only shared a couple of MOCs since joining but I feel like they were a couple of the best I've ever done. I guess building in support of your guild and the others who make it up really strives one to push the limit of their building skills. That, and getting to see some of the best historical MOCs out there has a way of inspiring greatness in others! As much as I enjoy sharing my builds here, it is the chance to view the phenomenal work of others that has got me addicted to this forum!

If you are wanting to become a better builder of MOCs illuistrating pre-16th century or fantasy life, I would say there is no better place to join than GoH. As others have said, there is no minimum skill required to join GoH.

  Please don't let me ruin the fun (Let's see If I can help.)

I could pretend that I'm still considering other options, but it is obvious for everyone that Mitgardia is the best guild to join, and other "best " guilds are only the refugee for the owners of lots of sand-colored bricks or trans-orange round 1x1 plates

(Hope this gives everyone an opportunity for trash talking, if desired  )

If GoH were like the entry level jobs I am applying to, it would be like this:

Required Experience to participate in GoH:

3+ years experience in SNOT techniques

1+ years experience in tree building

Demonstrated ability to stack cheese tiles

Thankfully the above is not the case.

Welcome to GoH!

I am glad you joined because here you really can improve your building skills.

I came out of my dark ages last year and I have to admit with the help of LEGO RPGs like LCC/LoR and GoH I have improved a lot.

GoH is the best thing for improving your skill- helpful pointers along the way. I came from using pre fab wall pieces and BURPs to where I am now- I've still a long way to go, but each MOC is seeing me improve, and try new things.
