hello there, I am currently working on a technic 1967 Mustang Shelby GT500. To date I have built it on the size wheels you get in the last two supercar sets i.e. 8.5 studs with big rims. However I am looking for a better style wheel to the original car, still fitting to 8.5 studs. I think there is a bigger wheel which might have done but evidently the model has been built to a slightly smaller wheel. Very grateful for any recommendations. Picture attached for better explanation.

Would either of these work better?

41896c02.jpg?0 (wheel 68.8 x 36 H)

41896c03.jpg?1 (68.7 x 34 R)

I think what you're using now is

44772c01.jpg?0 (68.8 x 36 ZR)

All of these tires have similar outside dimensions so hopefully you could swap them out easily. The top two will look smaller, though, since they're balloon tires instead of racing slicks.

The Bricklink page I used to find them is here, and Sariel also put together a page on wheel sizes here.

62.4 wheels might look good simply because they have a good size sidewall.

I do like those wheels, but they might be too small for this MOC. The 68.8x24 would have the right diameter and sidewall, but they're rare and expensive :(

Hi Hrafn, thanks very much for your post.. very useful.. I had a further look at the wheel chart as well and you are right, these are the best option currently available for me.. visually they may well look fractionally smaller but the plus is the current ones are visually probably a fraction too big so.

In the first two set you mentioned, to be sure, what does the 2nd figure mean i.e. 36H and 34R?

Hi Hrafn, I'll look into the 68.8x24, I have been trying to get the right fit stuff as I have gone with this model.. however the advantage of the first sets of wheels you mentioned is that I know I can most likely just swap them out, whereas the 68.8x24 may well require another small rebuild of the model, of which I have lost count already how many has been done!

The number (36 or 34) should refer to the width of the tire in mm.

EDIT: The letters (more or less) match the speed rating on real-world tires. The tires with the same letter also tend to have very similar tread patterns and aspect ratios (height/width ratio); the one exception is the Unimog tires, which are "R" but are narrow with a tall sidewall and truck-style flat tread. Confusingly, not all tires have the letter in their Bricklink description.

R: 170 kph

H: 210 kph

VR: > 210 kph

Z: > 240 kph

ZR: apparently the same as Z for real-world tires

wow.. my hat off to you sir, you know your tyres! thank you.. it will be a great model (when done!), although admittedly finding time and working through a myriad of different interconnected 'challenges' is proving a good challenge
