Laura Beinbrech Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 My wife got the Rapunzel's Tower of creativity set a while back, but was kinda disappointed that it was completely open on the back. I therefore decided to buy another Tower of Creativity set (and thereby acquire my own Rapunzel, Flynn & Pascal figures) and see if I could do something about that. Here's the result: Rapunzel's Tower Front by Hikaro Takayama, on Flickr As you can see here, there isn't too much noticeably changed on the front, however if you turn it to the side: Rapunzel's Tower Side by Hikaro Takayama, on Flickr ...You can see it is now fully enclosed. It splits apart on the seam and is held together with 8 technic pins at strategic locations. I also decided to make it so that the back wasn't an exact duplicate of the front for a bit of variety: Rapunzel's Tower Back by Hikaro Takayama, on Flickr My wife, needless to say, was quite pleased with the results. The only thing I'd like to work a bit more on sometime is the interior... The back side is relatively bare at the moment. Quote
Ultron Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Neat! Does it have an inside? That'd be cool if you could get it to open up by a hinge piece! Quote
Jody Meyer Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I think it should have come this way...great job. Quote
iamste Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 nice! next project; add some extra height to it! :) Quote
Colossus Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Thank you for posting this! I have had the same idea for my daughter's birthday present, and it's good to see how it worked out.I plan on showing her how to mod it with a few hinges. Quote
Laura Beinbrech Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Thanks guys! I was originally planning on trying to go with the hinges, but then I realized that it would be rather difficult to get everything to line up right, considering how the top of the tower is wider than the base, so I went with the pins. It DOES have an interior: I used the extra space to place some of the "floating" mini builds, and was thinking about adding a bed later (I don't have enough parts to make a Friends-style bed unless I pull one of the ones from the Dolphin Cruiser). B Rick Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 It's always good to have two (or more) of one set. It gives you a lot of freedom to mod the original, or, in this case, make a complete tower. It looks good, but I agree with the critism on the hinges. It would be nice if you coul open it in classic dollhouse-style... You're right about the top part of the tower sticking out, but you could come up with something to build/expand in the lowerpart to place some hinges perfectly lined up with the ones in the top. Another idea is to make the tower 'modular', floorwise. Also I'm wondering... Isn't eight technic pins a bit too much just to hold the two halves together? I used them in my Haunted House (which has hinges!) but had a hard time opening and closing it. So I deleted some and now it works fine. But maybe you don't have that problem... Happy building! Quote
TheLazyChicken Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Great job, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Keep up the good work! Quote

I usually go for overkill, at least when structural integrity is involved. That being said, I'm considering taking out at least 2 of the pins (4 of them are those 1x2 bricks with 2 pins built-in), since it is a bit difficult to take apart and put together... Quote

Ah, my kind of builder! :) I do the same thing. I always end up finetuning my creation long after I posted pics for show'n'tell... That's exactly what I mean. I've used too many technic pins in my house and it became very hard to open it up without accidentally breaking it down... Even opening it up used to be a pain in the axle... Now I use only 3 pins and it's a grande improvement ...but I still kinda have to 'slam' it shut... ;-) Quote
