lilongwe Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hello, I have one Problem if I use Motors or the PF Servo for steering. Either the spring or Motor are like in the following picture or if they are straight then the steering isn't in the center. How can I fix that problem? Thanks. lilongwe Quote

Unlike with the other gears that have a number of teeth divisible by 4, the orientation of the 12t gear matters. Quote
DrJB Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) hmmm ... isn't 12 divisible by 4 as well? One option would be to put the hockey spring NOT on the shaft gearing with the rack ... but possibly on another shaft, itself gearing with the gear that engages the rack. And then, indexing the two parallel shafts should be easy. Another option would be to do a return-to-center with rubber bands. Edited March 21, 2014 by DrJB Quote
Captainowie Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) Really? Last time I checked, 12 was divisible by 4. :-) I know this was a problem with the old 14-tooth gears, but I haven't had issues with the 12-tooth ones. That said, I don't know what the issue is - perhaps the spring you've got doesn't centre with the axle in a 90 degree angle. I don't have any of that part to check. Edit: Beaten to it by DrJB by *that* much. Also, I had a closer look at the photos, and that's not the issue with the spring. I assume it's not just that you have your rack one tooth offset from centre? Edited March 21, 2014 by Captainowie Quote

imurvai Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Well, if you turn it by 90 degrees then you do nothing to solve it :) You need to turn it by 360/12 left or right (depends on the orientation). If possible leave a 1 stud hole on the steering axle to be able to slide the 12T to and you can adjust the steering rack after putting together the whole steering mechanism. The best would be the ability to calibrate the servo somehow. It would solve problems when the gearing ratio should be changed. Quote
Lipko Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) The gear rack is designed deliberately in a way that the 12-teeth gear should fit it when the gear is perfectly "centered". Probably the gear rack was off by 1 tooth and disassembling/reassembling the thing accidentally solved it. Since 12 is divisible by four, turning the gear with 90° does nothing by itself. This doesn't make any sense at all. That said, as others have written, it can work to take the gear off and put it on again if in doing so you also fix whatever misalignment was causing the problem.
