rzetlin Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 It's been a long time since I started to build my own lego town. I have a lot of bricks, but not a lot of doors or windows. I have been thinking about getting the creator sets or maybe the lego city sets. I am not sure which is the least expensive sets to get to start up my lego town. Quote
The Executive Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 The least expensive would be Lego city or if you need a few doors and windows pick-a-brick is another option. If you want your Lego town to be on a more grand scale the modular buildings are another option if you are willing to save up enough money to buy a few of them. Personally I love the modular buildings and they are worth every penny. Quote
Colossus Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Are you looking for just facades for building in your city or more modular buildings? I started out the modular route, but it's getting really expensive. At this point, I have the cinema, the pet shop/Victorian townhouse, the emporium, and the Parisian restaurant. I have yet to finish supplementing my own bricks with some from Bricklink to finish a custom police station. I need something much taller than the modulars I already own to break up the monotony, but the only way I see myself doing that is just by MOC'ing a.building's facade to save time and money.Good luck with your decision,.though! lightningtiger Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Last years town square set would be a good starting point, unless you are lucky to find even though $$$$$ town plan from 2008. Quote
Laphroag Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I came out of my dark ages not long ago and recently picked up 60031 City Corner on discount at TRU. The bus is awesome and the buildings are nice. Overall a good and cheap set to start off a town. Quote
Captain Settle Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 You could try Bricklinking some doors and windows. Quote
pinioncorp Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 The new creator set (31026) will be a good option for towns, it includes lots of doors and window parts. It launches later this year. Quote
melbs Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 All depends what kind of a lego town you want to put up. I wanted a modular/creator houses/city combined lego town hence i started with the oldest modulars i could find then lots of road plates and then purchased the sea side house and some city house and town square. 3BrickFriends Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 When I started to seriously look into building my collection of parts 2 years ago, I bought 3 copies of the Police Station 7498. It had tons of windows and doors, and lots of white bricks. Great for starting out building city offices, shops and houses. I picked them up at 50% off, so they were great value for money. There's a new Police Station now but the old one is still available, so next time there's a sale you might still get it cheap. Otherwise the new Police Station is very similar in parts if you want windows and doors. Quote
streifen Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Getting creator houses (the bigger ones) in quantities will yield you plenty of bricks, windows, doors for your city. If you are tight on budget forego the modular houses first, unless you want to part them out for more bricks. The bulk brick bins/sets should also be avoided as usually the colours available, though plentiful, are in small quantities and not able to help much in your houses unless you want a multi-coloured one. Agreeing with 3BrickFriends, Police stations are great sources of white bricks and parts. Quote
Xyver Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I would agree with the Police Stations, and the Fire Stations too, as they both contain plenty of doors/windows which are a great place to start when building City. Then, to get more basic bricks, the Creator houses and multiples of the Modular series so you can have one in your city and another for parts. I have a second Town Square in transit at the moment, it's a great addition and/or parts pack for any City. If you wanted to add a bit of colour, much of the Friends line is built in a similar style to City buildings. It just depends on what style you are building in. If you want to keep it open backed in the style of Lego City, the 6x5 panels are great, so any set that has lots of them is going to be good. If you want bigger buildings, more like the Modulars, then the Creator buildings are the best way to go. The Tower Bridge is a pretty good parts pack as well, plenty of smaller windows and tan bricks. Quote
3BrickFriends Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 The Tower Bridge set is a good suggestion. What you have to remember is the price per piece. It may look very expensive but if you bought the equivalent £200 in smaller sets you won't end up with anywhere near as many pieces to build with (especially if you want tan bricks and blue base plates) Quote
Matoro Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 While perhaps not as geared towards MOCing, one of my favorite touches to my city was 8404: public transport station. The sets it came with were great in design and color, and even the parts selection was pretty good. I don't know how much it sells for any more, but if you should find it for a reasonable price, it really adds some great details to your city! Quote
Klikstyle Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 If you're just looking for kits to get you doors/windows etc, the Friends sets can be had for relatively cheap (especially online), and contain a ton of those type of parts. They also offer a lot of great detail parts for interiors. Some of the smaller Creator houses might be a way to go as well. Both of those options are cheaper than the City fire or police stations, which are much more expensive by comparison. If you have the money, though, the modulars are a lot of fun, and it it's an easy way to set up a standard for you to build your town to. Quote
juzo Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I started collecting for mine 2 years ago and being that i'm heavily into trains, have since bought heaps of trains and sort of neglected my buildings! I do however have quite a few modulars, town square, bus and tram set (8404) which is a beauty of a set. I've also bought lots of the creator houses whenever they're on sale as they're a great source for parts, plus you can build 3 different houses with them! Quote
Blakstone Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Doors-Windows-6117 I know it just retired but it would meet your needs. Quote
whydoris Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) MY suggestion (based on my experiences): - if you want a building with no interiors, buy the creator houses - if you want a building with interiors, have to buy modulars I started with Family House 31012, added with others (such as Apple tree house and log cabin). But I got over them very quick as they don't have enough details. If you are after doors and windows, depending on the style, I suggest you take a look at the Friend sets as some of them offer great windows and doors. I just bought a juice bar for my MOC (maybe a cafe) because of the big clear windows Edited March 31, 2014 by whydoris Quote
