I see a lot of classic cars built in LEGO around here, but hardly any from more recent times. Has anyone tried to build anything like a New Bug? A Honda Pilot? A P.T. Cruiser? A Chevy van? A Mazda Minivan?

New Bug? Difficult enought to build an "old" one ...

Anyhow your impression is wrong. There are quite a few builders, even active here, who build great modern cars - danthaman11, Search Function, solta, Gabor Horvath, to name only a few. Should be easy to find their threads.

If a van built in our scale can be identified as a Mazda or a Chevy is a different question - in fact nowadays I often don't recognize the brand with real cars either ...

Wow, looked up some of their stuff, and it's fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for.

It's a quite difficult to build a minifig scale modern car (4 or 6 studs wide) that could be recognizable if you use only standard LEGO pieces (without entering in the license paying issue to the real car manufacturers). Smart was one of them due to the simple lines of the model. Police and firemen cars look alike quite modern but them aren't representing an specific real car.

Construblock built a realistic modern car using specific pieces, but without using any real car as reference (for avoiding licenses).

Other like Airfix and Megabloks opted for reproducing real models using specific pieces and paying the respective licenses.

If you go to a high scale there are on the net great MOCs of modern cars that bring to your mind an specific car at the first eyesight.
