garethjellis Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) I have a good amount of designs that work very well with 9v, and still keep a really nice style and feel of what the model is based off, however when I try and convert to PF i feel that some of the clean lines ETC are lost. Does any one have any clever solutions for adding the IR receivers to 7W models, also does any one know of PF IR receiver alternatives, 3rd party produced receivers that are smaller? Also I think (because of space issues with PF battery box) I am going to resort to a pair of AA Li-Ion 3.7v batteries wired to a PF plug with a battery / circuit protection circuit board in line.. see the photo examples for my personal PF challenges, 7W model. The first is with out and has nice roof lines http://www.flickr.co...08/12681497534/ The second is with PF and this is the widest part of the train so is the only location. makes the roof look ugly. http://www.flickr.co...08/12681026535/ Edited February 21, 2014 by garethjellis Quote
Lazarus Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) 9 high sounds a lot, is there a pic of the full model would like to see how it looks. I was thinking of PF a class 08 so I could use the tecnic rod to run the connection rod that the class 08s have between the wheels. Or maybe making a 50/50 PF and 9v motor. garethjellis Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 It is about 1 over size to keep it in scale, I had a really hard time deciding on less detail or slight non proportion. I decided to go for non proportion for now, maybe the MK2 will be 1 shorter. http://www.flickr.com/photos/118397526@N08/12686202133/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/118397526@N08/12686539274/ Quote
Lazarus Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Nice to see it has the connection rod :-) Ya looks about 1 to high and I would say 3-4 to long for a class 8. Cut 1-2 studs between the ladders on each end and the wheels and I think you there. All my 7 wide locos are 7 high also. But still nice work over all I like it. Quote
zephyr1934 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I don't think there is a good conversion of this design to pf without a major reworking. You are probably better off starting from scratch... well... build something that conceals the pf, then add back in as much of the existing features as possible from this model. I'd suggest trying to make most of the hood 6 wide so that you could comfortably hide the pf there. Then the running boards become 1/2 stud wide but still doable. You could then keep most of your hood detailing too. Quote
garethjellis Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 Thank you for all your GREAT advice, this has been the trickiest model I have attempted. I would love to see your class 8's see how you overcame some of the challenges. Quote
baard Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Hi, I've made a version of a Class 8 shunter that you can find here (scroll a little down and you will find more pictures): http://www.flickr.co.../115097068@N03/ I have solved the "PF receiver ugly protrusion through roof" issue by using trans clear plates. This works fine. My shunter is 6 studs wide and 22 stud long. It has one L motor for propulsion, and one M motor for the uncoupler mechanism as well as the PF battery built in. Good luck with your conversion! Baard Quote
garethjellis Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Thats a great solution with the clear tiles! I had never thought of that. Also I think your de coupler is ingenious.! Thank you for sharing! Quote
