Dans lego Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Hi , I got thinking the other day, how much better models/mocs would be with more realistic engines, so I was thinking why not post a whole topic of different engines , for example, Marine engines, diesel engines , aeroplane engines, petrol engines, high performance etc.. -Dan Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I think Barman's V8 is probably the most realistic I've seen: Here is a 16 cylinder radial engine I built: My engine isn't the most realistic though. There is no valve train, and the majority of double row radials were either 14 or 18 cylinder engines. There are a few other small scale engines with working valve trains, but I've never seen one that had a true four-stroke setup (valves open on every-other crank rotation). Quote
Brick_Sticker Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Are you looking for realism, or functionality? (or both?). It's sometimes hard to get both in Lego, at least on a moc friendly scale. This is an engine I built about a month ago, kind of a generic representation of a Cummins inline 6 cylinder: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=539768 It has an intake and exhaust manifold, turbo, brake air compressor, starter motor, oil and fuel filters and looks mostly like a Cummins. It also has an axle that runs through the entire motor to drive the crank pulley and front accessories. So while it is a 'technic' engine, you really can't see much except a spinning pulley. On the other hand, a real engine looks like this, and not a group of pistons with no valves or cylinder heads. I guess my point is, it really depends on what you're trying to do. This engine is based on the technic piston scale, i.e. it is 14 studs long (each cylinder is 2x2 x 6 cylinders). However, as it sits it's also physically too large (out of scale) to go into say, the 42009 crane. It would probably work fine in the Unimog. I love to see a mechanical engine such as the LPE engines, but I also like to try replicate as closely as possible something that is real. I'd love to see more ideas though. nicjasno Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Problem with barmans engine is, that it is too big for models of vehicles. :P Quote
Paul Boratko Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Last year I did a smaller 1:6 scale version of an engine similar to what Barry did... [/media]I made this Ferrari one back in 2007... Edited February 8, 2014 by Paul Boratko Quote
nicjasno Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Ah, yeah! I remember that. That is much more like it :P Quote
Lakop Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Nice engines! Is it possible to add sound effects with mindstorms? H Quote
cgg199 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Nice engines! Is it possible to add sound effects with mindstorms? H You can add sounds with Sound Bricks, all be it very simple sounds. Quote
