Vee Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I saw the set yesterday, plenty, available in the Lego store near here (Tysons Corner, VA). $200 + tax. It is also available for VIP's at S@H. Tempting... Quote
jodawill Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 It might be people in countries where it isn't available. Quote
Faefrost Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 If the seller is including shipping in that price, then that is still a great deal for some overseas locations. Quote

It includes shipping but only if delivery is to the US. He sends to other countries but then it is not free. I am curious to see the final price, shouldn't go too much higher than what it already is. Vee Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Plus, the buyer has to pay customs fees for the set. Indeed. If sent to Brazil, it is only 60% of import taxes calculated over the whole value (shipping included) plus 18% VAT. Edited January 19, 2014 by Vee Quote
antp Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I remember in 2008 when Corner Café was still available on Lego S@H it was already selling on Ebay for more than the retail value, probably because at that time not many people knew that Lego was selling sets directly (and back then in Belgium that set wasn't available elsewhere than on S@H). Quote
mostlytechnic Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 It's buyers who don't know that they'll be able to buy it direct from Lego in a few days, or otherwise are uninformed. Same as people who pay through the nose at Christmas for stuff, although then there's a time crunch and sold out issues to "justify" it. Basically, most people aren't hardcore Lego fans and don't know. The simpsons house is selling for almost $300 shipped on Amazon, so it's not just an ebay thing. Quote
Vee Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Thanks for all your thoughts. It ended up selling for almost 300. Quote
DrJB Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Well, very easy. More people know about eBay than they know about TLG and bricklink. Also keep in mind that not all locations in the US have a Lego Store ... Some small village near Kenosha in Wisconsin ... or in North Carolina's Outer-Banks has absolutely no access to a Lego Store ... Quote

Right, but they can still get VIP access for free and free shipping on all orders of $75 or more at Lego S@H so there really is no reason to pay almost $100 more than MSRP for this. These people obviously have no idea it's available to VIP members right now on the Lego S@H site... Edited January 20, 2014 by Deathleech Quote

How many, of all the people who buy Lego, know you can get them directly from Shop@Home? ... Better yet, how many people (not on here), know that Lego sells directly to end-users??? Yup, I was just agreeing with you and pointing out that if they didn't live near a store they could buy online. The people buying it have to be clueless or have some extreme circumstance. It's kind of ironic really.. they randomly find it online on eBay and rather than do a quick and simple search (from the INTERNET they are ALREADY USING to get on eBay!) to see when and where it will be available they jump on the auction and pay WAY more than it's worth. How do they even know it's up on eBay if they are so unaware you can buy it yourself? Seems almost like a contradiction. Quote
Doom2099 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I wonder if this isn't a case of casual fans of Lego jumping on this because they love the Simpsons? When the press release went out, people who don't care about Lego at all showed me the pictures of the Simpsons house to see if I had seen it. They might be the type who are floating around ebay. Either way, it's good to show there's demand for this. Lego may be on to a hot theme. Quote
elleana Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Does LEGO S@H ship to every country in the world? No, it definitely does not ship to my country.. Quote
KingPixels Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Does LEGO S@H ship to every country in the world? Maybe, but to New Zealand it's at frankly ludicrous prices. $50 is the minimum shipping price for small orders. Edited January 21, 2014 by KingPixels Quote
Vee Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Does LEGO S@H ship to every country in the world? That's a tricky question. Lego ships to _some_ countries and even so not everything it has to offer, worldwide. Quote
Deathleech Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Won't stores like Amazon and Wal-mart eventually get the D2C sets and they can be bought there if there is no Lego S@H store in your country (or they won't ship to you)? Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 It is most likely uninformed shoppers. Pretty typical. I thought that is how eBay made so much money. Plus, lots of prior have that "gotta win" mentality, so they end up paying way more than expected on auction sites just because they wanted the satisfaction of winning. I sell minifigures on Amazon for way more than they go on eBay. Just uninformed shopping mostly. Quote

Here is another one worth pondering: It is well known that lego prices at Toys-R-Us are HIGHER than those at Lego stores (sometimes 10-15%). And yet, here in Chicago, TRU sells a LOT of lego, and there are 3 Lego Stores ... I can't follow the logic, but I guess convenience and impulse-buy may be factors ... Paul Boratko Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) The average selling price seems to be around $265 with free shipping... Assuming the sellers bought them at retail price and paid tax, you are looking at around $215 on average.. After factoring in the 14% in fees to Ebay and Paypal($37 on $265) and then another $20 for shipping, I don't see anyone even making any money on these... The only ones really profitting are Ebay and Payal... I guess you get your V.I.P. points though... It would make more sense to split the set up and sell the house and figs separate... Vee Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 14% fees! Wow, they are stealing money from the sellers. I was excited about this set but upon some reflection I see now some negative points and I will almost certainly not buy it: - too expensive - I am not a fan of the Simpsons, never watched a single episode, and I would be paying for royalties of something that does not interest me at all - there are too much interior and too little exterior and the colors in the interior are mostly basic, basic yellow, green, etc... colors that don't please me so much - also, I like Lego as a display toy so I like the exterior, the interior is not important, and the exterior of this house is kind of simple; compare it to the haunted house and the haunted house is much nicer. - all minifigures are ugly to me (well, I could sell them in ebay but I have no idea how much I would make) All in all, I should pass. Maybe in a promotion with 40% discount that will never happen, I would think about it. Quote
