DonBrizzel Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Back again. This time with a TIE Advanced. I have to say that of all of the ones I have done, I am most proud of this one. Everything turned out perfectly! Here it is, criticism is always appreciated! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Looks pretty good! I like it. One thing that I'd change — and this is something that I had a lot of trouble with and still haven't fixed on my own TIE x1 (in minifig scale) — the cockpit is significantly larger than you would think it should be when you're building it, by at least a stud in this case. (See this shot of the studio model.) Quote
BEAVeR Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hi, I think you're right: this is a very succeeded model. But I think Brickdoctor is right as well. The cockpit doesn't have the right proportion. A small thing that would make this model a little more accurate, would be to make the inner side of the middle panels of the wings light grey. The actual TIE Advanced as a lot of greebling there as well. That way, those plates you used for structural support would get a aesthetical function as well. Too bad you couldn't recreate the horizontal grey stripes on the wings. Maybe with clips and bars it could be achieved... But that would mean you have to rework the way the wings are hinged. Finally, I think the greebling on the wings can be represented in a more accurate way. Instead of using grill tiles everywhere, consider using 1x1 round tiles maybe, or maybe a jumper plate... think about it. So what's next? I've come to expect my daily awesome mini ship here. A B-wing perhaps? Or even a MF? Quote

A B-wing perhaps? Or even a MF? You are both correct, I didn't even notice that the cockpit was bigger. I will see what I can do. Same with the inner middle panels. I can't believe I didn't pick up on these details. My wife was rushing me out the door and I wanted to get it posted before we left. I will work on that as well. I am having a problem with the greebling on both of my TIEs, and I don't think the grill tiles are the answer either. I am still fiddling with that to make them better on both fighters. I think the next thing is going to be a TIE Bomber. Honestly, I don't know if I am even going to do a B-wing, because I hate the thing. And the MF Midi that TLG came out with will suffice for me for scale. Same with the TLG Planet Series Snowspeeder. Quote
DonBrizzel Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Okay, updated with the changes. Bigger cockpit and wing connectors, and made the inside grey. I also went overboard on the wings, maybe not. What do you guys think? Go back to the old wings or keep them like they are now? Quote
BEAVeR Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) I am having a problem with the greebling on both of my TIEs, and I don't think the grill tiles are the answer either. Consider using those grey levers (the same ones you used to make those lovely cannons) to make the grey stripes on the wings. I've the feeling they don't stick out too much. Also, maybe you could add flower pieces as greebles? I wouldn't know how to attach those though... EDIT: as for your new design, good work on the scale of the cockpit, looks really good!!! You maybe overdid the grey stripings a bit. Because you made the horizontal lines both on the main panel as the sub panel. That double use of grey tiles makes it look a bit too thick. Brickdoctor Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I'd take out all but one hinge for each each piece of the wing, color that hinge light bley instead of black, and get rid of all the 2x2 and 1x2 black plates on the insides of the wings. (Use the tiles on the outside to hold the main plates of the wing together if you have to.) It won't be as sturdy, but it'll thin out the wing and I think it'll look better. (And coloring the remaining hinge grey instead of black will be more more accurate as well as giving the illusion that the remaining thick part is thinner.) Quote
DonBrizzel Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Okay, I think this is the final rendition. I need to fix the regular TIE's grey on the wings and then also move on to the bomber! I'd take out all but one hinge for each each piece of the wing, color that hinge light bley instead of black, and get rid of all the 2x2 and 1x2 black plates on the insides of the wings. (And coloring the remaining hinge grey instead of black will be more more accurate as well as giving the illusion that the remaining thick part is thinner.) I see what you are saying. Basically eliminate the inside layer and keep the outside tile layer, then it would still be only 2 layers thick. To be honest I didn't like all of those tiles. Just looked too weird to me. I did, however, just add a gray piece inside that I forgot about. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) Thislooks really nice and simple, yet detailed enough for its size. Something I struggle to work with at this size is showing the right amount of detail. Yo have pulled it off well! But I do agree about the cockpit, that jumped out at me. Just a tad bigger :) *edit* oops need to refresh before posting :P Good outcome on the cockpit, Im not sure im a fan of the tiled wings, perhaps tile just the gray bits and see how that looks as well? It is difficult at this size, I don't envy you! But you are sooo nearly there! Edited January 5, 2014 by Fuppylodders Quote
