Paul B Technic Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 (edited) http://paulstechnic....n-roll-off.html Following on from my last two MOCs which were both rubbish trucks: (http://paulstechnic.blogspot.com.au/p/mod-lego-technic-9395-b-model-wheel-bin.html) (http://paulstechnic.blogspot.com.au/p/moc-rubbish-truck-with-rear-binlifter.html) I have now built another LEGO Technic rubbish truck to add to my fleet, this is a MOC I designed and built from scratch, a LEGO Technic roll on roll off rubbish truck. This MOC is based on a type of rubbish truck which I see in use here in Australia, they are used at building sites and business for the removal of large and bulky items such as building materials and general rubbish. As the bin rolls on and off the back of the truck it is left on site to be loaded while the truck can be used for other work, the truck then returns when the bin is full to take it away to be emptied. In my case this is designed for carrying bulky goods (Tyres) This MOC has a number of features, these include: - Fake V4 engine connected to the rear wheels via a diff. - Hand of God (HOG) steering via the black knob on the back of the cabin roof. - Opening cabin doors. - Mechanism for loading and unloading the bin. This is controlled via the handle on the side of the chassis. I have spent about 27 hours researching, designing and building this MOC, I watched a number of videos on YouTube of this type of truck to get ideas for this and how it should work. With the bin loaded on the back the truck is 40cm long, 16cm wide and 19cm high. Due to the simple nature of the mechanism I have not included Power Functions. My LEGO Technic rubbish truck fleet continues to grow and I have already started some planning for my next one. The only issue I had with building this was that when I built the bin and tried to lift it I had too much free play in lifting setup, the bin would get a little off the ground and then drop. I had to pull this to pieces and add some extra beams and pin to reinforce it, now it lifts with no problems. My original plan was to make the cabin tilt forward however when I started building this I decided due to the position of the engine in the centre of the chassis that this was not needed. Overall I am happy with how this has turned out, it fits in well with the rest of my rubbish truck fleet and I quite enjoyed the design and building process. Junpei Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Very cool! Your MOCs are getting better and better! The turning radius looks a bit big though. Quote

I am planning on breaking down some sets to get some more pieces to improve these. I will have a look at the steering too. Quote
Rishab N Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 These all look very nice! I especially like them because rubbish trucks are not common MOCs Quote
Paul B Technic Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 These all look very nice! I especially like them because rubbish trucks are not common MOCs That was part of the reason why I decided to build them, something a bit different. I have some ideas for a couple of different ones. I am just lacking time and pieces at the moment :( Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Paul am I right that you entered mini dark age that lasted about 3 months? I hope you will try and update the cabs a bit more. Quote
Paul B Technic Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Paul am I right that you entered mini dark age that lasted about 3 months? I hope you will try and update the cabs a bit more. Yes I had a couple of months away from the hobby, nice to now be back in to it with a clearer focus. My parts collection is starting to get a bit low, once I break down some sets I will have some more pieces to fill these in more :) Quote
Rishab N Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) I'd love to see one of these next! Although the orange would be hard to get Edited January 5, 2014 by Rishab N Quote

Although the orange would be hard to get You must be a mind reader as this is what my next plan is. I am selling some sets off at the moment to buy the pieces for it. I am thinking I might make it in yellow to match my other one :) Edited January 5, 2014 by Paul B Quote
Junpei Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Make it pneumatic. If you haven't already, don't buy linear actuators, especially if it's in yellow. Unless you're looking for a smaller scale. But don't forget the Mercedes-Benz logo TLH Quote
Paul B Technic Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 I will see what I can come up with, I have another little project I am planning at the moment that I want to do first :) Quote

Balrog Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I like the idea, but I guess the loading mechanism is far from optimal, because you need a lot of force on the axle to actually lift the bin. I would expect a linkage with a actuator-style mechanism to work much better. Also, this would be less stressing the parts. Quote
legomuppet9 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Very nice MOC you have there Paul, as others have said, you've improved a lot Just use a mini steering wheel as the Mercedes Logo, works a treat you can see what I mean on my Unimog: Unimog U5000 by legomuppet9, on Flickr Quote

Yes, once I get some more pieces (I am buying some sets tonight to piece out) I am going to improve it, it works ok until you add the weight of the tyres in to the bin. Quote
Krize Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I really like your family of trucks, especially the black modified 9395-B. It is a pity that I never build the B-model as I see that it really looks cool and fun to play with. Looking forward to the front loading version. I think I will try the mechanics for the front loader by myself. Quote
Paul B Technic Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks :) I am buying another copy of 9395 tonight and I think this might be kept as the A model. I am also getting 8421 and 8436 which will be broken down for parts to build my front loader. Quote
