UniqueBuilder Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 (Why on heart did I not buy that scorpion palace?) Because it included a big, ugly, <insert that tiresome argument>, ball-rolling thingie, of course! :-P Anyways, I'd like to see some more of the classic Johnny Thunder series. *wub* Quote
Mr Hobbles Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 I definently like the return to the Castle sets, it's like a blast from the past. Back to the origins. I also agree that a return to Adventurers might not be bad, but they'd need to find a new subtheme for it. We've had Egypt and Jungle, and now we need a new original one. I don't think it would work if it was simple a remake of Egypt or Jungle. Quote

This could work fine with a search for ancient Greek and Roman treasures. Imagine a hunt in the Labyrinth of the Minotaur.... :'-) They could do a lot of great creatures too with that theme, avoiding that difficult human versus human conflict.... Quote
Joebot Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Actually, SW can be considered fantasy. SW might be better classified as Science Fiction, but based on the literary definition of the word Fantasy, SW does have element of the supernatural and/or magic. I would point out the power of the "force" that constitutes these elements. A book, movie, film, etc. does not have to have wizards, dragons, and sorcery to be considered fantasy. Science Fiction can contain fantasy elements. SW is a good example. I've also head science fiction called "modern fantasy". This is debatable depending on ones point of view. Excellent post, Brickster. I heartily agree. Anyone who says "Star Wars is not fantasy" doesn't understand what the literary term "fantasy" means. If what that person actually means is: "Star Wars is not a Tolkein-esque fantasy knock-off set in a quasi-medieval world populated by creatures out of European mythology," then sure, I guess they're right. However, that's the very narrow definition of "fantasy" created by publishers who like to pigeon-hole books into meaningless genre definitions. Star Wars is not science fiction. Good sci-fi is focused on SCIENCE (hence the name). The point of sci-fi is to explore the relationships between humanity and technology. Star Wars has never been about technology. All the cool spaceships and lightsabers are just empty window-dressing. They're not the focus of the story. Fantasy, on the other hand, uses mythological imagery to discuss themes of courage, bravery, Good vs. Evil, and Joseph Campbell's famous "Path of the Hero." Star Wars fits that definition perfectly. Anyway, to get back on topic ... YES! I'd love to see more fantasy / adventure Lego sets!! Whether licensed or original themes, bring 'em on. Oooh, any George R.R. Martin fans out there? How about a Song of Ice and Fire theme?? -Joebot Quote

BearHeart Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 That's awesome. Got any pics? I've thought about doing a set of mini-figs from the books, but just haven't gotten around to it. A lot of the old castle shields would work well. You've got the lions (Lannisters), Wolfpack (Starks), Dragon Knights (Targaryens), forestmen (Baratheons), etc. I've been kicking around some ideas for Winterfell, but most of my grey bricks are tied up elsewhere. As for an official Lego line ... no, we probably won't ever see that. The books are way too adult, what with all the swearing, murder, violence, incest, etc. Can you imagine a set based on the Red Wedding? HA! The books are so great though. Have you heard that Martin signed a deal with HBO to make a TV series based on the books? It's all very preliminary at this point, but that has the potential to be really cool. I agree that it's hard to find good epic fantasy. So much of what's out there are shallow Tolkien rip-offs. A couple of other authors that I would recommend are Steven Erikson, China Mieville, and Neil Gaiman. -Joebot If you want to read some excellent fantasy check out Scott R. Bakker's "Prince of Nothing" series. I've read the first and second book out of the three book series. Its EXTREMELY well written with an epic storyline and also definitely geared towards adults. ( Sidenote: Scott R. Bakker lives in my hometown X-O ). PS I know this post is OT but I just had to mention PoN *wub* Quote
