Hi, I am trying to learn about the older Modulex type bricks. I have found a few sites online about them but is there any good place to purchase any? I live in US and it is hard to find anyone selling over here where shipping won't get expensive.

I found some info on http://minibricksmadness.com

Thanks!

Hi rollerbones,

You can find Modulex parts available in Bricklink... under 4 Modulex headings... Modulex, Modulex - Bricks, Modulex - TIles, Decorated, and Modulex Windows....

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogTree.asp?itemType=P

Also, in my 2800 page, 73 chapter Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide... as DVD download... I have an appendix that explains the history of Modulex...

Thanks rollerbones!

What astonished me with Modulex was the fact that there are so many different Modulex parts in Bricklink under the decorated tiles heading. But then again... today the company that Modulex morphed itself into is now the worlds leading sign company!

And speaking of signs.. the Youblisher format that shows my LEGO guide chapter isn't the best way to show it. Here's a chapter on LEGO printed bricks that shows how my collectors guide is seen when downloaded to a computer...

Someone say Modulex? :look:

Yea, I understand your frustration with finding US sellers of it, most of the Modulex I have gotten was mainly from Europe.

Yea, my daughter and I have around 4500 bricks coming from a few stores in Europe. We bought the architecture studio and when we bought some extra brick we bought a few of the modulex to see how they were now we want to get all modulex! I have been selling off other toys/computer parts on ebay to get $$ for more.

Where is a good place to purchase Modulex bricks? I have found some on Brinklink but wondering if there is any other place to buy a big lot and not individual bricks?

I sold my Lego Architecture set on eBay would like to get around $325 worth. I looked on eBay but there are only a few auctions.

Thanks!

Tom

Alright? What's going on here??

I just posted on a Modulex thread about this exact subject just a few weeks ago... but the thread has vanished? I even posted a link to my Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide chapter on Modulex?? But the posts are all gone?? :sceptic:

It's right here, and it was started by the same member five days ago.

Gary - Do you have any information on the amount of Modulex that was produced? It's obviously more scarce than LEGO, but there seems to be a fair bit available. Was it ever sold in the US/Canada?

Modulex morphed from a subsidiary of TLG producting architectural and industrial systems, to a separate TLG owned company doing likewise, to a company producing signs. The documentation on this is surprisingly sparse, and the majority of Modulex architectural building parts seem to date to the 1960s. There is so little information available on the Modulex company since then. :sceptic:

But "LEGO" or "MM" logo'ed Modulex parts date mainly from the 1960s, all of which appears to originate from Europe. I've never heard of anyone in North America unearthing a trove of these parts that don't have a European provenance. Also, unlike old LEGO parts which were heavily played with, Modulex parts always seem to be in rather good condition. Much of these parts survived in great quantity, and in excellent condition. So the differentiation between new and used Modulex parts is very little.

I would assume that most Modulex parts originally were owned by businesses. Later when these became unneeded, the businesses divested themselves of these parts by giving them away, usually to employees. Because of the "play potential"... one would assume that little of the Modulex was discarded.

Interestingly enough, there are no Modulex "sets" such as there are LEGO sets... only what we would consider Modulex "parts packs"... sometimes grouped into a large assortment.

Are you ready for a horror story? If not don't read this post...

About five years ago I was still in the army, we were cleaning out an old HQ building. I came across this big "Lego-ish" posting board / calendar/ organizer- thingy, about 2x4 feet if my memory is correct. It had hundreds of tiles of different colors and sizes on it. Being an AFOL it initially caught my interest, but since it didn't have "Lego" on the studs I lost interest, and it was thrown out. These buildings were from the late 60's early 70's, and after reading this thread I am close to 100% certain it must have been modulex. This happened in Denmark, which would make it even more plausible for it to have been. I have build Lego for almost 30 years, and until 30 mins ago I had no idea about this "modulex"

-"the horror, the horror..."

LEGO horror stories are out there for the faint of heart.... :sceptic:

LEGO Australia once (back in the late 1990s) took their entire inventory of spare replacement parts, and wanted to get rid of them. They tried to package some up for cheap sale to customers, but someone complained about getting just random parts. So they decided to discard the entire remaining inventory... 3 dumpsters full of new (old) LEGO parts went into the trash!!

Also, somewhere I have a photo of old Miniland LEGOLAND models that were "weathered" and replaced by newer models. Someone took a photo of the resulting 6 ft. tall mound of discarded models, awaiting destruction.... :cry_sad:

What made the discarded mound even more heartbreaking is that as LEGOLAND models are replaced, they are replaced with models with more current parts. These discarded models had the old 1956-80 discontinued classic windows....

Is modulex the right size for being minifig scale Lego? I ask because I'm mocing up a house and want to have some sort of "Lego" room would modulex be good for that?

One of my German LEGO acquaintances, Olaf from Germany, came across what he said were Modulex cufflinks. Since he posted these on Flickr... I've been mulling it over on whether these "diminutive" brick 1960s cufflinks were actually representative of Modulex... or whether they were just smaller sized 2x4 LEGO bricks... since a full sized 2x4 LEGO brick would be too large for cufflinks...
