WhiteHexagon Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Hi All, As a newbie town builder I need some tips on how to grow a town once it reaches the edge of the table!? It seems most serious towns that I see pictures of are floor based. But I really don't want to rellocate to the floor, my knees and back won't take that, not 12 anymore ;) Also I would imagine the town is going to get much dustier on the floor!? I I can somehow appreciate it more at table top height. I guess the obvious answer is a new table, but then I'm sure I can't find one extactly the same height, which might look messy. Also has some space and cost issues. Has anyone tried a two tier town? I haven't seen pictures, actually it might not look that bad apart from having to have some sloped road plates between the levels... Maybe even a small shelf above the table would help. I don't really want to build upwards, prefer to stick with creator house type buildings, ie more Village than Town. I'm also tempted to buy a sheet of plywood or something and balance that on the table, but I think that would look messy too. And I'll probably get a splinter everytime I walk past it! or just knock the thing off. I guess every town builder has had this problem at some point, and there must be some good tips/advice out there??? Cheers Peter Quote
Corvus Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I agree, building upwards would be a bit odd. I would suggest finding a nice empty room (or take one over, as I have) and build a custom table for it. But, as you said space was an issue, I'd reccomend shelves. It may split up your town, but at least you'll have somewhere nice to set it. IKEA has some very nice 'Floating Shelves' (not quite sure what they're called) that are quite beautiful. Sorry I wasn't of much help. Quote
zeki Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Maybe you should try to build a bridge between two tables... If you place them on oppiside sides of room or maybe they are of different height, try building an oppening bridge (Tower bridge style). This would also be a good thing as you will be able to walk between two section of town and your gusts may get a more detailed look. If your 2 plates will be to far appart, you don't have to build the bridge that will actual be big enought for the whole crossing. Just make it look cool! Some links: bridge bridge Quote

Rayden Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Ditch the current table, custom tables are your best bet. Mine is just a wooden plate on top of a few supports like these: http://img.yezzz.com/zm2748765.jpeg If you need to expand the table, it's easy to add another plate. You'll never have height differences and can arange the tables in any way you like, square, L-shaped or whatever. Plus it's cheap, leaving you with more money to spend on Lego. ;-) Quote
zeki Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 WhiteHexagon do you have any pictures of this town of yours? I would like to see it *sweet* Quote
MatthewUSA Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 My suggestion is to look through model railroader magazines. I have a collection of them just for this reason. I was using ideas from these for a basement layout I was designing before I had to move. These types of magazines come in handy. Even though they show layouts of smaller proportions, you can still use them for ideas. They also show pictures of special tables called benchwork. You might be able to get an idea of how to construct benchwork that you can add to when able. Take a look, they just might be beneficial. Plus they also come in handy for builing ideas and vehicle ideas. Not to mention railcar & locomotive ideas (if your also into trains). Good luck and have fun. Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 WhiteHexagon do you have any pictures of this town of yours? I would like to see it *sweet* If we get some sunny weather this next week I'll try and take some more pix. Although I might wait until the weekend after when hopefully the town will include cafe corner :) just no idea how that is going to fit in at the moment... Quote
