It's the internals of an RC unit. You can take it out and put it in without damage, but if you used it I wouldn't consider it exactly legal.

Why would this not be considered "legal"? Seems like the textbook definition of legal, considering it's a Lego part, just re-purposed? Looks very useful!

While I consider that purist, I'd still hesitate before doing so - you're taking apart an RC unit, which could be used for something like an RC-unit powered car! I think a working, functional RC unit is way more useful than that.

Unless the RC-unit took a dump and beyond repair. Then you could use it. But legal is up to the user. Legal- it's a Technic piece, let's build! Illegal- it's an extension of a whole part, not released as a stand alone piece in a set. But like anything, it's up to the builder. I say I need one!

That's what I was trying to say, sorry. But you're right, if my RC unit broke (like many others), I'd at least take it out. But I wouldn't consider it really purist.

It really is the builder's decision tho. I myself wouldn't use it even if it was useful, just because I would prefer at least cataloged parts in my MOC's.

This part is part or RC's steering unit, not RC unit itself. So it really doesn't matter if you have working or broken RC unit.

It doesn't matter whether or not it's "legal" does it, unless you're entering it in a contest, right? I mean, most (if not all) if Nicjasno's creations could be considered to have "illegal" parts, couldn't they? However, I would consider this legal, since Lego produces it and it doesn't require any tools to remove it. Even if not considered legal, you're the builder, and if you want to use it, go for it!

I posted this piece last year: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=505115

I recommend it, very useful. It's a true 4x3 T piece.

You think, but it's not true. First of all: this T piece isn't in the RC remote control unit, it's in the steering unit: http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5494285

--> that steering unit is much more useless, than this piece. Anybody, who say it's "illegal", don't know technic theme well. Why is it illegal? Because you have to take apart (with screws --> no damage!) an RC steering unit? You can take it back to the steering unit anytime, screws again, and it's like it was before.

I used it many times, for example:

http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5634869 ( http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5634833 )

http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5375032 ( http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5374973 )

IMHO in a contest, it also would be legal. Lego produced, damage isn't needed to grab this piece. So simple, it's all about creativity to find parts like this.

(the use also depends on the contest rules, if only cataloged parts are allowed, then it's "illegal" to use of course)
