Lego's names for stuff are very often slapped with generic conflict titles to make them sound more action-packed, so I would not read too much into that. Remember "The Wizard Battle" is just Gandalf and Saruman. Battle should imply a larger scale, but for Lego, it's just a hot-button marketing tool.

Yeah, but it still bothers me.

Here are what I think are what the set titles SHOULD be, if they were true to the titles of the chapters of the book (and movies) and were not concerned with the effect on sales.

LOTR Wave 1

Gandalf Arrives: fine as it is.

Shelob Attacks: Shelob's Lair.

Uruk-Hai Army: fine as it is.

The Orc Forge: Isengard Orc Pit.

Attack on Weathertop: "A Knife In The Dark" is the chapter name, but maybe the official one is fine since it lets us know the location depicted.

Mines of Moria: "The Chamber of Marzabul" didn't include the well in the book, so maybe the set name is fine.

Battle of Helm's Deep: Siege of Helm's Deep

Hobbit Wave 1

Riddles for the Ring: Riddles in the Dark

Escape from the Mirkwood Spiders: fine as it is, as "Flies and Spiders" was a confusing title in the book.

Barrel Escape: Barrels out of Bond

Attack of the Wargs: Out of the frying Pan, Into the fire

An Unexpected Journey: An Unexpected Party

Goblin King Battle: Escape from Goblin Town

LOTR Wave 2

Wizard Battle: Wizard DUEL

The Council of Elrond: fine as it is

Battle at the Black Gate: Battle at one half of the Black Gate

Pirate Ship Ambush: Corsair Ship Ambush

The Tower of Orthanc: fine as it is

Hobbit Wave 2:

Too early to say if they are accurate to the movie, BUT there is no dol guldur in the book, nor any chase in lake town, nor any Orc attack on the mirkwood elves.

I believe Lego didn't use the book chapters as set names because they don't have the book rights. It's pretty evident with some of the sets where they named it something very similar.

I don't particularly mind most the set names, they describe the set fairly accurately. Some could use work though. I mean it's a bit silly naming something with 3-4 good guys and 2-3 bad guys a "battle" because most of us imagine WAY more participants than that, but it's understandable considering they want the set to be appealing and an interesting title.

I would rather be descriptive but avoid all the buzz talk. Some of the titles don't describe what is included in the set.

Gandalf's Cart

Shelob

Deeping Wall

Isengard/Orc Forge/Pit

Weathertop

Mines of Moria

Helm's Deep

---something--- you could even call it Bilbo & Gollum

Mirkwood Spiders

Elf Cellar or something

Warg Attack is a good description, but I'd rather it was called something like Placename Forest if the incident happened at a particular location that nothing else did.

Bag End

Goblin Town

Isengard/Orthanc Wizard Duel or Gandalf & Saruman

Council at Rivendell? Rivendell on its own is inaccurate. Council of Elrond isn't bad anyway

The Black Gate (of Morannon/Mordor?)

Corsair Ship?

Tower of Orthanc

I don't mind the official set names. Seeing 'Out of the frying pan, into the fire' as a title of a LEGO set would be hilarious.

Balin's Tomb would make much more sense for the set name than Mines of Moria since that's the specific place the set takes place in. I am guessing Lego didnt want a set named after a grave site though, or a character not in the set, lol

How could I forget that one!

not so hung up on the tomb, I imagine tolkien fans would only make up a small percentage of their target audience and they are going with scenes that are more recognisable to the lay person.

The official set names makes perfect sense in terms of marketing. And frankly, I fail to see how it can be *that* bothersome. In most cases, they're fairly accurate.
