In older sets lego used to include instructions on how to build some useful tools to pop out pins and undo other tricky sitations.

I used the "T" shaped pin popper many times to get out the black pins they could be very tight in old sets like 8865.

I remember those instructions, and how difficult it was to remove the black pins. Always just used an axle to remove them, and I still don't see much reason to build the T shape.

I've been swearing a lot about the pins in axle connectors in official sets lately, so I will definitely try the blowtorch method. Thank you for showing that page to me again; I forgot that method, as I never needed it then.

I've used my teeth on those old black pins. They were a pain to get out even compared to modern black friction pin.

Don't worry, the really old sets with my teeth marks are not going for sale as long as I still breathe. They have been kept separate from late 1990's/early 2000 when I resumed buying LEGO after I left college and had money, and also separate from late 2000 when I came back from the real dark age. Those pieces have different "feel"

What do most people use for stubborn axles etc.?

I was looking at some soft jaw pliers http://www.amazon.co...soft jaw pliers

But also need something to push axles without damage.

For stubborn axles I like to push it out with this part and then use some pliers to finished it off. You can put tape around the tips of the pliers If you think your going to do damage the axle end. If I have no Pliers around I will gradually push the axle out with another axle.
