cheeze Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Ok Quick question for you guys, im needing a make some winch drums for my crane, now the 3x3 discs are to small and the large 40 tooth gears to big, so can anyone else give me any ideas? do you get any other sizes of discs that can be used? Or know what ones these are? Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 They are train wheels....not drums,,,but they are round... Quote
nychase Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Are those Train drive wheels? Also, would the 36t gear be small enough? Quote
cheeze Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 Cheers Alasdair, now that youve said that ican see it, any idea on the size of them? bricklink doesnt say The only thing with using the 36 tooth is i lose the width of the drum, its only 6 studs wide and i need a lot of string on it Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Your best bet would be asking in the train forum.... I found this picture which may work as a reference. http://www.holgermatthes.de/bricks/data/images/trainwheels/trainwheels_lego_new.jpg Quote

Diameters vary from 23 to 37 mm (~3 to ~5 studs). Quote

paul_delahaye Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 (edited) They also look a bit like the technic balloon tire hub, http://www.bricklink...D=5&itemID=1541 Edited September 10, 2013 by paul_delahaye Quote
Junpei Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Darn, paul_delahaye beat me to it. Those are definitely the small balloon tyre wheels. Quote
Lakop Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 They look like wheel hubs to me. From what I remember, train wheel hubs were not much different but it's a long time since I saw train wheels. H Quote

weavil Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 They also look a bit like the technic balloon tire hub, http://www.bricklink...D=5&itemID=1541 Looked at the original size of this and that's what they are. It looks like there is something black in the small side of the wheel hub as a spacer. There is a groove for a tire on it too. I remember seeing this one before when looking for Lego cranes. Quote
Lakop Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 That's an amazing crane by the way. I would use a wheel hub myself as they are easier to get hold of (in my collection already) than an actual winch drum. H Quote
jantjeuh Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Do you have a link to that crane? Looks amazing. Quote
cheeze Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 (edited) Yeah here you are http://www.flickr.com/photos/rynning/sets/72157626708902819/detail/ Edited September 11, 2013 by cheeze Quote
jantjeuh Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 (edited) Pretty cool, thanks for the link :) Interesting to see that the lattice boom is constructed entirely with studded Lego, I guess because it's stronger and stiffer than studless beams. Edited September 11, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote
Lakop Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Stunning! A great model and shows the studded technic beams at their best. I still use a couple of studded beams to hang my various coats on for the past few years. H Quote
skriblez Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 This crane looks brilliant! Great work Quote
