Answer to your best ability. Not according to how you WISH there was a 3rd wave or more, but how likely it is.

1) Do they sell well? Store managers or Lego employees are in a good position to know this.

2) Do you know anything that can confirm for certain that there will be more sets next year?

This isn't proof at all, but the fact Gimli was shown on the back of the Azog box makes me think we'll see more from LOTR.

I've no idea if it sells well, but it's popularity on here and among AFOLs in general seems to be high. Probably not as high as Star Wars, maybe on a par with Super Heroes.

There is so much potential as well. There are so many interesting and attractive set opportunities; characters, locations, creatures, that is there is another wave, Lego won't have to scrape the barrel for set ideas.

Agree with Tolkien here. After the third wave all bets are off, but there's a gap that would logically be filled with a third LOTR wave, and they clearly planned on a third wave, since there are so many major scenes and characters missing right now.

I'm not too worried whether we'll be seeing a third wave or not. Its the fourth wave that really concerns me. There's too many essential sets to be covered in just one wave, and once the final Hobbit film is released in theatres Lego may decide it has no reason to continue on with the license and move onto a new more relevant IP.

It would be nice if they can squeeze one more year out of the license.

There were several reports claiming the theme wasnt doing so hot when it was first released, but I don't think a single one of them had any hard evidence, it was just random people hearing things from "friends who worked for Lego". The CEO mentioned the line was doing really well in interview, but other than that we haven't really heard much of anything. I do know in stores I don't see any of the older LotR waves where as I was seeing other themes like Dino and Monster Fighter sets easily a year later clogging shelves.

As of right now all signs seem to point to AT LEAST one more year of LotR sets. The absence of major characters like Faramir and Eowyn, and even whole factions like Gondor lead me to believe Lego is holding some stuff back for a future wave. Otherwise why didnt they include a fifth set this year that had Faramir or Eowyn and a Gondor setting?

Well, there are 2 more movies coming out -- 2013 and 2014. I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing new LotR sets at least till 2015.

I also expect one more wave. We have already seen a fully designed Lothlorien set in the video game, and I don't believe LEGO would miss the opportunity to release a balrog set. If I remember correctly, LEGO responded to a consumer complaint regarding the lack of female characters by promising the inclusion in future sets (via Facebook). Sure, we have seen Arwen and Tauriel, but Eowyn is arguably (actually hard to argue otherwise) the most heroic female character in the Hobbit/ Lord of the Rings. Finally, an Osgiliath set similar to the Uruk-hai Army would make sense from a financial standpoint. A Gondorian helmet would be the only new mold required. New printing for Faramir and Gondor soliders/ Rangers plus Gondorian shields, and the set is good to fly of the shelves all over the world!

After the last Hobbit movie all bets are off. I am not very optimistic, since I remember a report concerning the significant financial drop in sales of licensed sets in non-movie years. Hopefully we'll get confirmation of the continuation of the line with the new Hobbit instruction booklets!

3rd wave = 99.99999999% (or 100)

4th wave is currently 50-50 for me... I hope it will be done with some great locations and Grey Heavens ship set as the last bit of the LOTR line (after all others!)

Well, there's an empty spot between Hobbit 2 and 3. Why the hell wouldn't they.

Exactly. They'd never leave the summer slot free of Tolkien sets when anticipation is high for the final Hobbit film.

4th wave is definitely a risky proposition, but I think there's a pretty solid chance of one "final wave" that might have both Hobbit and LOTR. Even if it's just a Grey Havens ship that'd be nice.

One question, does Lego actually have the license for the final Hobbit film? It seems everyone just assumes they do. I have no idea what their agreement is or how it works, but what if they only signed a 2 year license agreement since that would have covered the two original movies? Then we wouldn't even see a third Hobbit wave unless they renewed it, much less a third LotR wave. I am hoping that's not the case though and their license was something more like they have the rights to all the new Hobbit films, and getting a third film just extended their license like so many people seem to believe.
