I found someone selling these on Ebay:

... and thought they looked interesting. Are they real Lego parts or third-party parts? If real, what's the part number?

Those are real parts, I don't know the part numbers though. The dark gray part is half of the torque tube found in 8110 and 9398, and the metal ball was released in the mindstorms ev3. This assembly is used in the mindstorms ev3 as a ball caster

I have two on their way to try out... I'm picturing them attached vertically to some suspension so they can swing easily but also pop up over small, low, obstacles (like 5mm high speed humps in robot trial tracks).

Dang, I can't wait for these pieces. I probably don't have the parts for it, but I would love to see some huge cranes with these pieces, they seem like they would be perfect. Too bad that store doesn't sell the rubber inserts..

I found their store, ile9os, and they are 10 USD. Actually, that store has much better deals than any lego site (except Ev3 bricks/sensors), especially with pneumatics and chain links.

It just looks like a ball bearing in a unimog joint. I think it would be cheaper to bricklink the part then find the right size bearing and put them together if you need multiple of the part then pay $15 for 2.
