neoconagenda Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Has anyone used the 8878 on this yet? My plan is to use one on the chasis and leave the standard pack on the turret to keep the counter weight in place. Quote
afol1969 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 when i open the file it says that 12 pieces was removed from the model, anybody know what pieces that was removed? Same here. If I don't know which parts are missing, surely I'm not able to build the model correctly before making instructions. Greetings Alex Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Same here. If I don't know which parts are missing, surely I'm not able to build the model correctly before making instructions. Greetings Alex I think it is the pins holding the mud guards on,you can see that the axles and bushes are all screwed up. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I am willing to help by converting this LDD file to LDraw and replacing any missing parts. The problem is that I am terrible with LDD. It is the least intuitive CAD software I have ever used. Before I export, I just want to rotate the boom so it is parallel to the ground, but I can't figure out how to do it. The hinge tool makes no sense to me. Can anyone give me some advice? After that I will create an LDraw file and make some renders. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Maybe we could do another community instruction process? Although I am having some problems with Lpub crashing... Blakbird you might be better exporting the arm and carrier separately and then rotating them in MLcad. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Blakbird you might be better exporting the arm and carrier separately and then rotating them in MLcad. How can you export them separately? I have my own LDraw.xml file for LDD that contains lots of extra LDraw part transformations so the exported file is not missing so many parts. Right now, the LDD file has 3776 parts and my LDraw file has 3604 so that is not too bad. Of the missing parts, I know what 60 of them are and can add them easily to the LDraw file, but I have not been able to identify what the other missing 112 parts are yet. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Here is a LXF of just the boom and hook. http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/alasdairryan/cadfiles/gmk6400_boom.lxf Edited June 17, 2014 by Alasdair Ryan Forgot the link.... Quote
Blakbird Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I am now muddling through LDD and exporting each group as a submodel into MLCAD individually. This will take a long time, but it will make the file much more usable for instructions later. I am interested to see the final parts list. In particular, I want to see how many parts have to be added to the basic 42009 and whether buying two copies would provide the majority of the parts. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I've completed the conversion of the superstructure, including replacing all parts which didn't convert and swapping the parts which don't exist in LDD (like the L motors). 1070 parts just in the superstructure. This file is broken into the same submodels as the groups in LDD, so it shouldn't be quite so terrible to add building steps. Quote
afol1969 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Hi Alasdair & blakbird, It would be great if you can create a CAD file from the LFX file. My offer to create the instructions is still valid The boom itself I think is quick made, because it only differs minimal from the extended Boom created by Christophe Moitte. Another thing is the turntable. Maybe I have to make a little modification what concerns the boom counterweight; I had to use a second battery box for a better balance. (see pictures in the extended boom instructions) But I'll see, if I've build the model, and maybe I still have to buy some parts.. But the the instruction project I'll not start before September, in August I'm in holidays, and before I'll have finished the instructions for the RC 8-leg Spider and Nico71s' Braiding machine. Greetings Alex Quote
gerger Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Hi guys, i need to apologize that I didn't show up for a while because my 1year old son love the crane so much that whenever he saw me disassemble the model, he will start crying and pulling my legs.. He is now checking everyday to make sure 'his' crane is still there.... I also found that the latest LDD brickset 1392 update will open my model with 12 bad part errors, which I identified they are the 12 yellow shock absorbers (76537). It's a LDD bug. At the moment, the program can't drag part 76537 onto screen and models using this part get a bad part error. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I finished converting the file to LDraw. This includes manually converting all the parts which LDD doesn't export as well as replacing all the parts which are missing/substituted in LDD such as L motors, LED lights, suspension arms, etc. I started with Gerger's groups and then added a few more. I also added the string. Final part count is 3575. I'm trying to make sure the file contains proper attributions. From what I can tell, the original mods were by Jurgen Krooshoop and much of his superstructure is maintained. Christophe Moittie designed the extended boom. Gerger totally redesigned the carrier to have an extra axle, independent suspension, driven axles, and a new cab. Does that cover everybody? Maybe we could do another community instruction process? I like the community project idea. I don't have time to step the file, but there is no reason it couldn't be parsed out to multiple members. If the file were fully stepped, I volunteer to create the instructions from there. Another thing is the turntable. Maybe I have to make a little modification what concerns the boom counterweight; I had to use a second battery box for a better balance. (see pictures in the extended boom instructions) But I'll see, if I've build the model, and maybe I still have to buy some parts.. I'm sure there are additional mods that could be made to make it even more perfect. I too thought that the turntable could probably use more support. A ring of rollers would be awesome. The only other thing I can think of is to more fully enclose the supersturcture like WR3KL3SS did here: I'll make a few more final adjustments to the file and then post it. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Well I will be happy to help add steps, but I can't finalize the complete instruction due to Lpub crashing when adjusting the settings. Quote
Blakbird Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Well I will be happy to help add steps, but I can't finalize the complete instruction due to Lpub crashing when adjusting the settings. LPub works on my end even with a file this size. If you want to step it, I'll do the LPub work. Of course, someone will have to the wires! Quote
grum64 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I don't have the head on me to understand fully what you guys are on about but I do like the look of the end result! That crane is awesome! Quote
Blakbird Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I've posted the Brickstore parts list. The final model has 3540 parts if you include the string. I'm not sure how many strings you need for the boom extension so that could be wrong. At average Bricklink prices, this model would cost almost $1100 USD! Of course, a large chunk of that is the Power Functions elements. If you happen to already have a copy of 42009, then you already have 2151 of the parts and only need 1389 more, but those parts will still cost you ~$700. Assuming you can buy 42009 for less than $400, it is a cheaper way to go than buying the parts individually. Adding a second 42009 doesn't help as much. It only gets you another 687 parts and you still need 702 more worth $575. I've also posted the LDraw file. I'd like to keep my file as the "master" file and collect any revisions that people make in one place. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) Blakbird there are some errors on the axles that need to be checked, see below..... Axle 1,axle 2 and 1&2 assembly. Edited June 20, 2014 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
Blakbird Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Neither issue exists on my computer. For the shocks and bracket, they look fine so I must have a different version of the parts library than you. For your other image, it looks like axle 1 in your assembly got moved back by two studs. In mine it is positioned correctly. Don't know how that would happen unless you bumped a key or something. Quote
afol1969 Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) After a first look, I have 95% of the part list available, only a few parts I've to buy. For perfect Instructions, I have to build the model - and to disassemble and rebuild it for control. @Alasdair: I don't think that LPUB crashes due to the parts amount, Madocas' Truck has more parts, and I didn't have any problems (except that LPUB is very slow) But sometimes LPUB crashes where I don't find the reason. I've opened the Cad file, and the are three unknown parts. But that's the minor problem. But first I' have to correct the position/rotation points for all parts. So let's begin Greetings Alex Edited June 20, 2014 by afol1969 Quote
Theo van Vroenhoven Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) If you throw in 42009 and 2x 9398 (you need 5L motors...) there are not that many parts left. However you still need a lot of relatively new parts: 20x http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=15459 14x http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=48496 14x http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=11954 10x http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=11949 This could be a nice project for the Christmas holidays... But first I' have to correct the position/rotation points for all parts. So let's begin I thought you said you didn't have time to work on it until September? Not that,I opened the file straight off the download. That's really odd. I've heard of parts having different origin points, but I don't know how a whole user-created assembly could move. EDIT: I just reopened the file and now have the same problem! It was fine when I made the pictures I posted earlier. My only guess is that I got one of those "Some parts have newer versions" messages when I opened MLCAD and some of the parts got replaced. Look below and you can see that the shocks are correct in the first image and wrong in the second. In any case, I fixed all the issues and re-posted the file. the boom seems longer than gergers images: when did it become longer? This is the way Gerger build the LDD file. If you look closely, you'll see that the outer boom is one panel (11L) longer, but the overall boom is the same length. The telescoping portion of the boom now retracts more fully. afol1969 Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 I thought you said you didn't have time to work on it until September? Right. But for correcting the parts positions, it goes rather quick. Next week I can send you the CAD file. The stepping work I'll start at the beginning of September, same for the build process. So first I've to check up the inventory and buy the necessary parts.
