Ummmmm.... LEGO collecting can be perilous to a relationship....

I know of 2 men who's wives divorced them at least partly over LEGO (a Dane and an American). Seems that the LEGO collecting got in the way of marital bliss. That's not to say that the marriages weren't already in trouble for other reasons.... but the spouses of these 2 men did not like their husbands collecting/building LEGO.

I also know of several people (mostly men), who have their online orders of LEGO sets/parts shipped to their work address partly because they didn't want their spouses to know that they made these purchases, or made so many purchases. This is more prevalent than you think!

So having a non-AFOL spouse can lead to difficulties on the home front! :sceptic: This is probably more true where there are no children in the family.

Funny, I picked up the exclusive 41999 set at the Lego Store yesterday. Thought very long and hard about my needs and family needs and decided to put it back on the shelf. The addiction can be managed.

"Bricking Bad"

Nice!

The girl issues that surrond the whole Lego collecting/building is also a pretty big issue, specially in the beginning of a relationship, if you are a bit older that let's say 16-25 you might get the "you still play with lego/toys" from a potential girlfriend, it's always tricky to manage expectations in the getting to know you phase, specially if she isn't in the scene and gets to your place and sees the little bricks of wonder (even worse if she steps on one Yikes!!!!) Your doomed after that, or not. It takes one hell of a gal to stick with you, thick and thin and brick.

The Lego test can be a doozie. I also know at least one guy whose wife left, but it was already a complicated situation and the Lego thing was just the proverbial straw. It tends to go with the blame game from there on.

As for the dealer he really should change markets, you can make a pretty penny with lego sets without the Drug dealing, plus you only have to worry with the IRS, not DEA (on second thought maybe he is safer doing what he's doing  )

Of this entire topic the one sentence that made me laugh the most was this one... " Once kids have handled their first brick, the parents are screwed."

As a followup to this sentiment I would add... "Once the parents of these kids handle the bricks and become AFOLs... then the kids are screwed"....

True that  My son have zero interest in Playmobil, Skylanders and whatever crap is offered in major chains (ToysRus etc) as it's "not LEGO" (<-- his words). Unfortunaly, he knows all about Bricklink/Ebay too so he knows we can get any set/brick anytime ... ("But dad if you don't have any money just go to the bank, the got plenty!")

I can blame only myself

Major bonus is that it's (it as collecting/building/playing) a HUGE father/son bonding thing that we both enjoy heavily

To be on topic, I have (in the way way back past) spend more on drugs than on LEGO. And I got 300k bricks/500 sets

Even as a kid, I avoided clone brands. Yes, I know, you're talking about toys in general, not just clones.

This is an opportunity to teach your kid about how banks and money works.

"But, son, only a small amount is mine" "Of course, I could borrow some, but it will cost me (interest) when I repay it".

"Hey kid, consider mowing a lawn for someone Then, you'll have some Bricklink/eBay shopping money."

There it is: Lessons about bank accounts, loans, and earning cash.

Give it a well-educated Splat!
