rebelego Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 A live steam contraption I made from an old Mamod SE.2a steam engine and LEGO. I have bin bit by the live steam garden railway bug. Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 That's really nice. Though couldn't you gear it up a bit? Haha. Quote
eurotrash Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 That's really well done. The sense that there's a high risk of explosion is definitely enhanced by the slow speed and the machinery shaking. I love it! Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Nice combination. Now all we need to do is figure out how to hide a boiler in a scaled Lego frame... Quote
Electricsteam Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Nice combination. Now all we need to do is figure out how to hide a boiler in a scaled Lego frame... You may need bigger drivers though... Quote
rebelego Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 Thanks! how does it work?! Not sure what you ask about. How a steam engine works is probably better described at Wikipedia. Though couldn't you gear it up a bit? I have tried, but the engine is way too weak. Here are the videos that gave me the inspiration to make this: http://www.youtube.c...mlord111/videos Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 That is a good thing to see! It does seem a bit slow going considering how fast that piston is whizzing up and down by comparison. Never mind it just adds to the weirdness of the overall theme. Quote
dvsntt Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 That is so cool. Can you help a person re-create this? I'd love to put something like this in the mini makerfaire coming up in my region in October. Thanks. Quote
rebelego Posted July 15, 2013 Author Posted July 15, 2013 A true maker shouldn't need more than the video to have enough inspiration to create his own version. I might bring this to the Oslo Mini Maker Faire next year. This year I had my lego train layout on display. Unless you have an old Mamod, Wilesco or similar steam engine or can get one for free, I wouldn't bother buying one. The engine runs only OK for about a minute or so. It is not something you can run continuously all day. Though, a lot of improvements can be done like - Replacing the solid fuel burner with a gas burner. - Add a steam valve. - Remove the useless whistle which leaks steam. - Add a water top-up valve. BTW: I am a bit surprised that the lego pneumatic hose doesn't melt. What would be really cool would be to make an engine using the pneumatic cylinders running on steam. Quote
