Bamos Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 (edited) Hello everybody just thought I would share a project for my LEGO railroad. As a fan of the Great Northern Railway I made a boxcar that is loosely based on one of the most numerous of the G.N. 40 foot Boxcars as they went through various rebuilds from the forties to t when they were scrapped in the eighty’s The first one is from when they were built in 1947. they were painted in all Mineral red which is a reddish brown with black under frames and trucks. There are no Reddish brown doors so I decided to use some black doors as a compromise. The roof walks were left unpainted for safety and soon weathered to a light grey Great Northern Boxcar 1947 Rebuild by diesinker87, on Flickr The cars were rebuilt in 1954 and repainted in vermillion red with black under frames and trucks and white safety stripes added along the bottom edge. At this time their roof walks were also changed to metal. This paint scheme is easier to recreate due to the necessary parts in red. Great Northern Boxcar 1954 Rebuild by diesinker87, on Flickr In 1970 the cars were rebuilt again this time painted Big Sky Blue with black under frames and trucks. At this time they also had their roof walks removed. But since the doors are not available in blue some more substitutions were needed. Eventually I want build these in real bricks soon and i have created a video of the blue boxcar instructions on YouTube. The rest are basically the same with just some color changes. DaveBey Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Nice boxcars, Bill! I really like the green boxcar you posted on Flickr. Is there a story behind the green? Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave Quote
eurotrash Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 They look great. Those 1x2 plate handles work very effectively as steps. I hope you share pictures when you build them in bricks. Quote
Bamos Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 (edited) Thank you everyone for your comments. The green boxcar was a series of cars that was repainted in pullman green and fitted with high speed trucks for their fast mail service in 1948 . The green should be much darker but there are not many parts available in dark green yet. The brown boxcar was the standard color for most railroads from the great depression to the bright paint jobs in the 50's .It was a cheaper paint made from iron ore. Bill.
