BlueberryWaffles Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I heard on the radio that over 970 baby girls in the U.S. were named after some Game of Thrones character. Odd. Quote
Legogal Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Good luck with the name game. You will come up with something eventually. (Yup, boy or girl child...I keep my LEGO stored up high. My son liked to chew on things until he was about 18...so I always made sure there was a generous supply of new rubber bands lying around when he was old enough to not swallow them. That meant that fewer of his LEGO were destroyed by chewing.) Quote
N-4K0 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I heard on the radio that over 970 baby girls in the U.S. were named after some Game of Thrones character. Odd. Did you get the name? If it was Daenerys, the babies could have been named after her nickname, Dani. I don't think neither are bad names, although Daenerys might appear strange to some. Quote
Sid Sidious Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 If I had a daughter, I'd name her Agatha. Or Gretchen. Maybe Helga. I like Agatha the best though. Quote
gryffindorcommonroom Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Joanne (Rowling) Katherine (Rowling) Julia (as in Romeo) James (as in Dean) Marty (as in Marty McFly) George Romeo (as in Julia) Quote
Grimmbeard Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I like Agatha the best though. That wouldn't have anything to do with your avatar, would it? Quote
LiamM32 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 That's right what some people here have said. Don't use character names that people would immediately recognize. However, I think that fiction has created some pretty good names. Just make sure that they sound like a persons name, and that they aren't too recognizable as the fictional character. Do you like Bionicle? I was surprised that Greg Farshety's daughter is named Alexandra. Bionicle characters are probably obscure enough. Here are some good ones: Hahli would be my personal favourite. I believe that there are real people with this name, and it doesn't sound too weird. Nokama sounds good, but it is still on the strange side. Macku For Star Wars, I like "Padme". Just have a survey first (or before any strange, character-derived name) to make sure the name is not too recognizable as the character. Quote
Sarah Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 DS's name is Theodore He was born just a couple of weeks after the last Harry Potter book was released... in which "Teddy" was born. (Teddy being a common nickname for Theodore) Truthfully, he was not named for the HP character. We had the name picked out already. But we certainly didn't mind the connection. And so far, though he's been asked many times if he was named for the Chipmunk, no one has ever said anything about HP (OTOH he isn't to the age where they read that series either) DD has no fandom connections in her name despite our geekiness. She does have a close-age friend whose name is Aurora though (in that case the little girl was named after a Canadian brand of tire, evidently) Quote
Chase McCain Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Lord of the Rings: I'd be careful drawing from here because of the fact that very few of the names sound sensible enough not to raise eyebrows. Sam, Merry (though it's used more as a feminine name), Rosie and names like that seem acceptable. Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Are you only looking at movie names? If you're open to other geeky names, here are some aviation related ones: Piper Whitney Trent Allison Jet Tay Electra Douglas Mriya Page Siddeley Avanti Or maybe a name from an airline name: Sabena Ana Cathay Braniff Avianca Just a few more options. If I ever have a daughter, Piper would be first on my list, followed by Katherine or Katie. Quote
