brickie Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 This year, the first model train show for BrisBricks was to be held at Doomben Race Course here in Brisbane. I was unsure as to what to build for my tables on the LEGO train display. Then it hit me; build the race course including the grandstands. The result has been very popular at train shows and a mini Expo. There has been much excitement from the audience as the horses race down the straight in the Doomben Cup. The starting barrier comes with flashing lights for the starting signal. We even had streakers attempt to disrupt the Cup. Luckily the judge had a camera ready in case there was a close finish. Each race had a random winner. Here is a video of the Doomben Cup. It was a lot of fun building the race course and even more fun seeing the smiles on faces when the horses 'gallop' down the track. lightningtiger Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Great work 'brickie', though don't the horses ever fall over ? Brick On 'brickie' ! Quote
timmyc1983 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 "And it's the black horse by a nose!!!!" That's pretty cool, and the stand looks great too! Does the same horse always win or is it totally random?? Great job and happy building Quote
Hoexbroe Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Excellent! This gives me so many good ideas! Quote
Missing Brick Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I was going to ask how you got the horses to move...maybe magnets under the track or something... then I spotted the technic reels at the finish line. Q. Does this mean the race is 'rigged'? Nice job with the build. Quote
eurotrash Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Each race had a random winner. That's what ALL the Carnie-folk say.... I like this a lot and I can see why it was such a crowd pleaser - there's something for everyone. Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Slow horses, I wouldn't bet on them! But apart from that, really well executed and very creative! Quote
brickie Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 Many thanks for all the kind comments. though don't the horses ever fall over ? Yes LT, especially if a tile lifts or the string for horse one gets hooked on the inside fence. Does the same horse always win or is it totally random?? Totally random, though sometimes the same horse will win a few races in a row Slow horses, I wouldn't bet on them! You should see them gallop when I turn the control on full power. Quote
tl8 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I saw this at the Toowoomba display. The (other) kids were impressed as always . I was also wondering if the results were random, glad to find out that they were. I am interested to see what you will have next year! Quote

Thanks for the encouraging comments. The next outing for Doomben is at the Gold Coast model train show in 3 weeks. Those horses certainly earn their money. I have not given next year a thought at this stage. Who knows what may crop up. Quote
brickie Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 Doomben race course had its final outing recently at Brickvention in Melbourne. We had 2 days to set up the display so I was able to add lots of little details. Now to pull it apart and build something for display at shows this year. Any suggestions? Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 So sad to hear the end of the race track......how about a footy or cricket match at an oval ? Brick On 'brickie' ! Quote
