Faefrost Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 (edited) I'm just curious. I had two of my friends young daughters visiting today. Ages 6 and 9. And they insisted on seeing my "Lego Room" (My Office). I always find their visits sort of fascinating as they pick up and perceive things very differently from how I do. A major part of my office display is a series of hear height shelves that wrap around the room supporting a street scene of modular buildings transitioning to Jabba the Hutt and the Lone Ranger, around to the Ninjago Temples, then wrapping to the a small market town of the MMV Mill Village Attack and some fill ins, around to the Joust and from there running accross the LotR sets and some final SW shelves.and a shelf of Pirate ships. Of these the girls spend some time poking around the Modular buildings and all of the various city and cmf minifigs wandering the streets there. They glance over everything thing else, and then just dive into The Kingdoms Joust with true joy. Knights. Horses. Queens and Princesses. Food. etc. It just seems to grab them more than anything else that I have. Is this fairly indicative of what others see with young relatives, etc? They liked the Lego sets in my room. They head over heals love that Joust set. Edited June 22, 2013 by Faefrost Quote
Kristel Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Yep for mine (6 y.o.) on the princesses, food and horses. She loves the horse-drawn cart from the mill village raid set. Not so much the minifgure knights, although she loves to watch "Mike the Knight". (I wish I hadn't typed that out. Now the "Mike the Knight" theme song is stuck in my head!) Quote
Darth Dino Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Hi all sets can be for girls. Unless you or somebody else is teaching them that particular sets are "for girls" or "not for girls". Even then. if somebody is interested you can not barely change that. Imy childhood i had a friend (a girl) that had more Lego technic than i had... So why not? Good thing, you have "all" themes those girls did not know but now have for the first time to play with. I have a boy and we both own togehter a lot of Lego. I now have a daughter too, and she will learn what kind of Lego we have (City, Technic, Star Wars, modulars...). I will not bump her into Friends until she wants it. "For girls and for boys" only appears in adults minds. Dino Quote
naf Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I'd just leave it up to the girls to tell you what sets they like, if any. My stepson is just getting into Lego, and I started him on some of the smaller Creator sets. Now he has things circled in the Lego catalog, and has picked things out at the Lego Store that grabbed his attention. His sister is a few years behind him, but when she gets old enough to start playing with Lego, I'm going to just bring her to the Lego Store to see what she gravitates towards. I can totally see girls being into the castle themes, especially Kingdoms, with the princesses, kings, and knights in shining armor. Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I don't know that you can generalize about it, but my 5YO is crazy in love with the Constitution train from the Lone Ranger. The Chima flyers have also been big hits. She loves that they are both birds and planes, and she loves Eris. She was not happy at all that the Ravens and the Eagles were at war with eachother, and in her story it soon turned out that the whole war was just a big misunderstanding. Now the Ravens happily fawn over Princess Eris, who is really good at repairing their broken Chi crystals. Also, Eris has a British accent. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I think it varies. I just found out my 13 year old niece is really into LEGO. We live in different cities so I don't see our disk to them too often. But she really likes the monster fighters and super heroes sets. Her 12 year old sister is really into friends. My 3 year old loves friends and super heroes and some of the CMF. I really think it varies. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I often see town to be very popular with girls in the supermarket and creator always sells when it is themed after more mundane items. Castle is not generally in the supermarkets. In the LEGO Store the PaB is very popular. Quote
Aanchir Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 AFOL-oriented playsets like the Kingdoms Joust will no doubt appeal to any girl or boy who has a passion for LEGO building. This is because AFOLs generally expect that a set be well-rounded. This lends itself to detailed models with a good balance of action play and more conventional role-play, and a good balance of interior and exterior detail. The modular buildings, for instance, are basically dollhouses when you really boil it down. So a girl interested in that type of role-play can surely enjoy them. Yet a boy can enjoy them just as easily, for similar reasons, without feeling ashamed of it. This isn't to say all AFOL-oriented sets will appeal to kids. Model sets like the Taj Mahal offer considerably less play potential of any kind once built. Other good sets for girls include any licensed set related to a brand that girl likes (I have no doubt that there are more girls involved in the focus group testing for themes like Harry Potter, since a lot of girls as well as boys tend to like those franchises and it is reflected in the set designs). And depending on the girl, she may like action-oriented themes like Ninjago or Hero Factory every bit as much as her male peers. If there were one "silver bullet" to make girls like a toy, it wouldn't have taken TLG nearly as long to win over that market. Quote
