CorneliusMurdock Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Can't believe I missed this topic before! Star Trek was my gateway drug to Star Wars. I grew up with TNG and that started my love of good Sci-Fi. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by the new movie. When I first heard about it, the nerd within almost threw up. It wasn't more than five minutes into it, though, that my inner nerd started doing a little nerdy dance of joy. Favorites Movie: Voyage Home. Absolute classic. Time travel was never done so well. Series: DS9. Being an English major and having to analyze so many plots and stories for class ruined a lot of average TV for me. DS9 is one of the few series that had such depth in it's character and plots that it withstood the analytical side of me. Character: Chief O'Brien. One of the few everymen ever spotlighted in the franchise. Episode: TNG's The Wounded. Quote
smittyfan Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 You're in for a treat then, because in DS9 there's an episode where they time travel into the Trouble With Tribbles episode. I can't remember which season, but I don't think it's the first. Time for you to watch DS9! cool! i seriously need to check that out! Quote
boki-san Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 (edited) What is your favorite Series: Next Gen, original series, and Enterprise Your Favorite films of the series: Reboot, Undiscovered Country and First Contact Your favorite Characthers from the shows: all, ... just all ... butcept for the voyager crew ;) And your favorite epsiode : way too many, unpossible to even list the top 10 a video made with my, then, 9 year old son Edited December 23, 2011 by boki-san Quote
-zenn Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 What is your favorite Series: TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise Your Favorite films of the series: First Contact, Nemesis and Star Trek Your favorite Characthers from the shows: Picard, Data, Neelix, EMH doctor, Tucker and T'Pol *drools* And your favorite epsiode: I mostly like those alternate reality episodes. That's why I bought all those fan collective boxes. I really hope that they're gonna make a new series soon. cool! i seriously need to check that out! It's called 'Trials and Tribble-ations' from season 5. Quote
loading... Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 What is your favorite Series: Definitely TNG, it's what I grew up on as a kid. It was my first insight into Star Trek and even though I believe Voyager is technically better (but not by much), the memories I associate with TNG make it a no contest. Your Favorite films of the series: It's hard to say. I've never got around to watching the TOS era movies for various reasons (mainly not wanting to have them interrupted by adverts). To be honest, I never really like the more action oriented TNG era movies. I think that something was lost from the series. Your favorite Characthers from the shows: Mot the barber of course... And your favorite epsiode : I'll get back to you. 02:47 is not the ideal time to answer such a question. I have a questions of my own. 1. What's your favourite ship and why? Quote
Mr Man Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 A bit of a bump, but I wasn't sure weather to ask here or start a new topic for it, but has anyone played the new Online Star Trek Game. I'm waiting until it goes FTP but does anyone know if it is worth buying an account? Quote
brickmack Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 Big Star Trek fan. My favorite series is probably TNG (Though so far I've only seen that, Enterprise, and the first few episodes of TOS, so I might change my mind later). My favorite movie is probably a tie between First Contact and Insurrection (I didn't like the new one much, the story was ok and everything, but I'm not a big fan of going back in time and messing everything up so the future is different. I'm hoping somehow the whole thing will be fixed in the next movie somehow...). My favorite character is a tie between Data and Wesley, both remind me of me in various ways. Quote
Nightcruise Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 I've seen several of the series, like TNG, DS9, Voy, and Ent. The main movie I've always liked was First Contact. Quote
Lothos Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Ds9, season 3-7 was probably the best "trek" I've ever watched. Still enjoy the films and a majority of the books. Quote
Mr Man Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Well I've watched all of Enterprise, DS9, and Voyager, and a few episodes here and there of TNG and TOS, and 1 episode of TAS. My favourites in order would have to be: 1) DS9 2) TOS Era Films (WOK and TUC) 3) First Contact 4) ST:2009 5) Enterprise 9000) Voyager Has anyone seen these reviews, mainly ST but also some Doctor Who and even Red Dwarf . Thea Neotera Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I am both a tremendous Star Trek and Star Wars fan. Many people often prefer one over the other, but I can honestly say that I like both way too much to choose a favorite. They're so different that I can appreciate them each in a unique way. I probably watch Star Trek a lot more often than Star Wars, but that might be because Star Trek has so much more video. Though I have to admit that I never saw more than just a handful of episodes of TOS and DS9, but I own the entire TNG, VOY, and ENT series, though Voyager is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite. Captain Janeway has been my favorite fictional character from any movie/tv show since I was in 5th grade (when I first started watching Voyager during its 3rd season). She's probably the reason that I began watching Star Trek at all... What an amazing character. What is your favorite Series: Voyager Your favorite film of the series: First Contact Your favorite character from the shows: Kathryn Janeway And your favorite epsiode : "Deadlock" - I've seen the entire Voyager series from start to finish 5 times, but I think I saw this episode at least 30 times by itself. It's just SOOO good, though "Coda" is probably a close second. Quote
Cwetqo Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 What is your favorite Series: Voyager Your Favorite films of the series: First Contact Your favorite Characthers from the shows: Janeway, 7of9, Doctor from Voyager And your favorite epsiode :The one from TNG where they find Borg and pretty much all Voyager cliffhanger episodes (last/first ones from each season) I've wacthed all Voyager seasons, all Enterpsise seasons and some DS9 episodes, but until now it didnt cought me . I am still preparing to wacth all TNG seasons (I've wacthed many parts thru last 15 years, but never as comlete seasons). Quote

Especially not Equinox. I think Unimatrix Zero was probably the best cliffhanger, though I tend to prefer stand-alone episodes. Quote
Mr Man Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I really didn't like Voyager at all. I never saw TOS or TAS, but I liked TNG, DS9 was something fresh form TNG after series 3, but VOY seemed to be rehashing TNG plots at much lower quality, full of plot holes and bad science (Threshold any one?) Janeway was a (IMO) poor character due to the inconsistency in writing for her, all of the main writers for VOY had their own take on her so it messed up her character no end . I liked the Doctor and his actor who managed to act brilliantly despite the crap he had to say (vaccinating using anti protons?), and 7 would have been a brilliant character if it wasn't for the fact she was dressed only to show off her 'Borg Spheres' instead of wearing a uniform. For me ENT was a bit hit and miss, especialy series 1 and 2, the biggest shame was canceling series 5, just when things started to get interesting. However I did dislike almost all the main characters (especialy Charles 'can't do simple algebra but is chief engineer' Tucker, and Archer) except Reed and T'Pol (if it wasn't for the fact she also wore definitely 'illogical' uniforms). Thea Neotera Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 (edited) It's too bad you didn't like Voyager, Mr. Man. But to each his own :) I, on the other hand, could not stand DS9. When I ran out of TNG, VOY, and ENT, I tried watching it. Each time I started Season 1, I could not even get past the first 8 or 9 episodes. The writing was just awful, especially for the O'Briens. But that's just my opinion. There is, however, one point on which I must disagree with... Janeway's character was extremely consistent. In fact, it was the most prominent complaint that the writers received about her character, and that's why they felt that they needed to express her "dark side" in Equinox. She didn't change AT ALL in Seasons 1-3, became somewhat more elusive during Season 4, but then reverted back to her normal self in Seasons 5-7. Of course, this doesn't bother me one bit since I love her character, lol. The Doctor, on the other hand, is the one who I feel got the shortest end of the stick with regard to consistent writing. He was perfect in Seasons 1-6. But whoever wrote for him in Season 7 was absolutely awful. He's like a completely different hologram. The writing for the Doctor is Season 7 is, in my opinion, the worst writing on the entire show. However, I must point out that a significant reason that I like Voyager so much more than the others is probably due to nostalgia. I grew up with it, and still remember what it was like seeing a few of the episodes for the first time. I did not watch any of the other Star Trek series until I was in college. That being said, every tv series has a few bad episodes. Over the years, I have compiled a list which I call "The Forgotten Fourteen." They are the 14 Voyager episodes which I don't like (either due to inconsistency, excessively dark subject matter, or just complete lack of interest in the story) and almost never watch, and Threshold is most definitely on that list :) Edited February 5, 2012 by Thea Neotera Quote

I'm re-watching them all now from series 4-7. As for Janeway just look at her approach to the prime directive from episode to episode, also when written by Jeri Taylor she is written as a woman, when written by others she is just a captain this is really quite noticeable series 4-7. As for the Doctor just watch the second to last episode for an example of how regressed his character is or the episode Author Author, it would have worked as a series 1 or 2 episode where him and the crew are slightly at odds with each other. I didn't grow up with any of them (well ENT was around when I was younger but I never saw it) and I only got into it in preparation for the latest film, so I may be more objective, but I really didn't like VOY, sorry . To be concise ST is about the ideals of humanity, ENT tries to to be perfect but with all the new frontiers they don't reach it, TOS, TAS, and early TNG is where humans have become Utopian moral creatures and have a 'comfort zone' late TNG, and DS9, show what happens when you push humans over the line and force them into conflict. VOY should have similar vibes to DS9 and late TNG because of the new frontier situation in the Delta Quadrant and Borg everywhere, but there's no internal conflict, hardly any moral decisions, no major deaths, and unlike TNG or especialy DS9, there's hardly any supporting characters, everything relies on the 6 main cast members with next to no input from others and no secondary cast. Oh if you want to try DS9 start from the last episode of series 3 and work onwards skipping ferengi episodes etc, and I really liked the O'Briens family dynamic, it was quite realistic. Quote

I'm sorry, but I just don't see it. She takes each situation in a different way because that's how normal people act. No one responds to every situation in the same way... it all depends on the circumstances, mood, prior experiences, etc. I agree with the lack of supporting characters. They tried to fix this up a bit in Season 7, where a lot more of the junior officers got speaking roles (even if it was only to say "aye sir" to Janeway's orders), but it is very noticeable for me as well. And I just might have to take your advice about DS9. Each time, I tried to start it from the very beginning, and it was just so awful... Quote

As for acting different ways, Picard would always try diplomacy you never saw him deliberately 'fire first ask later', smiley Sisko would generally fight his way out of a problem, Jane way was sometimes written as Picard, and sometimes a Sisko, not too bad a thing, as you say it's more realistic, but it just means she will do one thing one week and the total opposite the next week with no explanation as to why. I understand what you are saying, but I think that you're biased by the fact that you are comparing her to the other two. In truthfulness, Janeway very consistently walked the middle-ground. In each instance of threat, she tried diplomacy first, and only upon it failing did the phasers start firing. There isn't a single instance in Voyager's 7 years in which she fires phasers first as asks questions later. Quote

I suppose so, they probably are examples of what I mean, but that would involve watching it to find them . On another note, has anyone played the ST online game? It's now free to play. Quote

I played the trial when it first came out, but I don't remember being particularly thrilled. I am getting a much more powerful computer in a week, and was thinking of trying it back out again. Have they added any new features since its release? Quote

An absolute load, it's like a new game (acording to reviewers, I haven't played it since the beginning), but It's really quite enjoyable, unfortunately you need to have a level 25 fed character before playing as a Klingon.
