bord4kop Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I am having difficulties choosing what to get as next set; My whislist contains; The big truck (8258) Or the litle one (8052 Container Truck) And this one is on my list (8053 Mobile crane) Or the buggy (8297 off-roader) Or the 8265 Or should I get my hands on something completely different? Any idea 's and/or suggestions? BTW: I allready got: towtruck (8285) The digger (8043) The motor (8051) And the 4 in 1 pack (66318) The new JCB 8069 I will buy definately next year! jantjeuh Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) 8258 is definitely the best set out of those four. I didn't particularly enjoy the 8053, though the B-model is pretty good. The 8297 is nice if you don't have any big wheels/shock absorbers/etc. yet, but the motorized functions are pretty lame. I have no experience with the 8052. You're not considering the 8265 though? It's really an excellent set. Can't recommend it enough. Edited November 20, 2010 by jantjeuh Quote

I thought it was a small set, but it has more than 1000 parts. It 's about 80-90 euro in The Netherlands.. Hmm, I am adding it to the wish list too, and skip the buggy Besides I got enough motors and the lights from the 66318 super pack. (Tho I could use extra remote controls.) I was thinking just just now; The 8258 is about 130 euro, if I take this as budget maybe combining two sets gets me more? As in more parts and more interesting parts.. legolijntje Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) If you choose 8265 or 8069, I should wait for the 8069, becuase it has mini LA's. I have the 8258 and it's a great set, have you ever heard of Han's modification's of it (whit instructions):My link (rigt buttons, "original Mod's") A friend of me has 8297, it's a cool model, but it has almost the same PF pieces as in the 66318 PF set 8052 and 8053, what I heard is that it are good sets, but not special or something. So I should choose (top 3 from your list): 1-8258 2-8265/8069 (somewhat identical) 3-8297 Edited November 20, 2010 by legolijntje Quote
Marckeyh Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Get 8297, that set isn't gonna available for much longer. It's a great set anyway, looks even better in real life than the picture. Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 In my opinion, 8258 is the best of the sets you listed. Lots of gears and the functions work fairly well. Fun build too. 8265 would come in second. I just picked this up a week ago, and it is a great set. Good amount of gears and more detail than I've seen in just about any other Technic set currently being offered. Of all the sets listed, this seems to be the best value for the money. Only downside is that playability isn't very good unless you motorize it. Turning the crank can be tedious. The 8297 off-roader is ok. Not as good as the above sets, IMHO. However, it does have the large tires and cool suspension pieces. Lots of black and dark bley pieces as well. I will not be buying 8052 or 8053 unless I find them on sale. Anyways, that's just my $.02. -Daniel Quote
Pazoozoo Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) Ok guys and gals, I have finished the Green Grocer, the fire brigade and the Grand Emporium. What should I do next? Should I do them a second time to get the pieces? Edited November 20, 2010 by Pazoozoo Quote
Erik Leppen Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) I have 8258 and 8265 and I think both are great sets. I think 8258 is the best of them all. It has everything. Complex gear mechanisms that are very fun to build, cool functionality in the finished model, a great looking final product, and a good parts assortment in various colors. Also the B model is interesting. It uses one motor to drive four functions, so it is also quite playable. 8265 is also excellent. For its size it is quite complex and compact and I found it a joy to build. Also it has nice attention to detail like the railings, lights, mirrors. It has no motor, so you ahve the typical hand-driven Linear Actuator problem, so the playability is a bit less, but the build and looks more than make up for that (I don't mind limited playability, for me the build is the play). I have no experience about the other sets. The container truck 8052 looks interesting and blue is a rare color, but it seems a bit limited in functionality and the alternate model is outright stupid. I'm really looking forward to the mobile crane 8053, as both models look great to me and it seems to have a lot of functions and an interesting parts collection. The off roader 8297 doesn't really interest me, too much gray for my taste and I don't care for the motorized functions. I don't really care that much about off roaders anyway. EllieMental Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I'm temporarily emerging out of lurkdom to cheekily ask for advice. I have £50 (GBP) in Tesco reward vouchers to spend online. I'm a grown up, I shopped boringly for these vouchers and I'm going to spend it on lego. (see the range http://direct.tesco.com/homepage/toysgames.aspx) Generally speaking, I like buildings. I wanted to buy some of the new HP stuff partly to thank TLG for making them, after it seemed we would see no more. My first thought was, great! I can buy Hagrid's Hut, which I shrieked at the first time I saw it, mainly due to the mushrooms (really like mushrooms... ). On closer inspection, I really don't think there's much in it that I don't already have in quantity, and its lacking in the window department. I'm short on modern windows/doors, so... So the Burrow seems ideal. Cool, full of funky colours and accessories. One caveat, I don't like fleshies, and they seem to account for a huge part of the cost of the set (its 60GBP here, which is ~95USD ~70EUR). On a rough BL add up, I could sell the figs and come away with about 20GBP for them. (I'd prefer to keep the hair, and give myself a decent chance of remaking them in yellow, but obv they won't be worth much then). So is it worth what I'll pay? One way or another I'll spend the 50 on lego, even if its a completely different direction, such as making the purchase a "parts pack" , eg a creator 5868 (full of green, never have enough green) and some 6117 doors and windows. So, what to do ? Thanks! Quote

Since you don't like fleshies, go with a Creator set, though I don't see why you don't like fleshies on a licensed theme when they actually generally are flesh in the non-Lego versions. vexorian Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 (edited) I just found a retailer with a LEGO sale and some 2008 sets. Which means that there is 7707 and 7706 for 42.5 and ~49 USD respectively. This is considering that sales are unheard of in this place and that the prices usually stay at 1.42 times the US retailer price. So these sets would have been 71.0 USD two years ago. I am thinking of striking venom because it looks really great in the pics. Considering that this money could be used in newer sets, would you do it? Edited November 23, 2010 by vexorian Quote
prateek Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 I think Exo-Force is one of the best themes in recent years, and that set you've got pictured is pretty cool. Just my two cents. I'd get it for sure. Quote
The Soup Nazi Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 (edited) Eh. I got it when I was little (it's broken down now ), and it's OKAY. The parts are meh (but the dark green is AWESOME!), but if this for display, I'd go for it. Edited November 23, 2010 by The Soup Nazi Quote

To be honest, it all depends on whether you like Exo-Force or not in comparison to new or future sets. Personally, you should buy it now while it is on sale since you mentioned that Lego is much more expensive in Bolivia. Though what do you like more, Exo-Force or current licensed themes(Exo-Force is discontinued)? 200th post! Lord Embo Quote
RileyC Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Ok I got a bit of a conundrum for ya, I can either get the new AT-AT or Grievous Starfighter and the Emperor's Shuttle. The AT-AT looks like an awesome set but I feel the two others may total its awesomeness. I would love to hear what you guys think I should get. But please, dont bring up prices as I dont live in the US so they will be invalid for me. Quote

I'd personally get the Emperor's Shuttle as it has four(out of four) new figures(or at least redesigns of old ones) and a medical droid! But it depends on what you like most in reality. I wouldn't advise you to take my advice, since I'm biased. Seriously though, GG's SF is pretty cool, so I'd get that along with the RAS instead. IMO, it's way better. Quote
