I'm very excited for Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming sci-fi epic "Pacific Rim", about giant mecha fighting kaiju in the near future. So excited, in fact, that I decided to make the film's main mecha, called "Gipsy Danger", in LDD.

And in the way that any average person would see it, since the Jaegers are almost 90 meters tall...

I also wanted to include the interior of the Jaeger, since the pilots are the most important part. I couldn't fit them in the head like they do in the movie, however - that would have required an MOC bigger than me!

In the film, two pilots are synced together into a single mind to operate the Jaeger.

All I could fit in was a highly simplified version of the machinery.

This was my first real mecha build, so I'm not sure whether it'll be able to support its own weight or not - though I'm guessing 'not' is more likely. If I ever acquire the cash I would need to build it in real life I'd almost certainly have to add on some pistons to support the legs.

If anybody wants to try and build it, the LDD file is at my brickshelf: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=526069 I'd love to see what it looks like "in the brick"!

I'd recommend adding a little bit of bulk to cover up the joints. It might make it less accurate (or not, I've never heard of the movie), but it'll make the MOC more impressive. For a first attempt at a mech, it's better than most. Far better, considering the amount of articulation. It's rare to see proper articulated hands incorporated into a mech even by extremely experienced MOCcers.

I'll see what I can do about adding to the hips; I wouldn't want to sacrifice the range of motion afforded by the other semi-exposed joints though. The mech in the film isn't too much bulkier that this one, and its joints are exposed, it's just that its joints are larger in relation to its body than the equivalent LEGO parts are in relation to this MOC. Here's the blueprints image I worked off of: http://comicbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/gipsy-danger-hq.jpg

Also, here's the trailer for you and anyone else who hasn't heard of the movie. It looks like it's going to be great:

As I watch it again I'm noticing details that I should incorporate into the model... off to revise!

Those blueprints make me think you should try incorporating more Bionicle pieces, at least to make the shell look more interesting, because all the big wedges right now just look kinda "blah" lol

I would, but I was designing this with the intention of building it someday. Most of the appropriate Bionicle pieces were never produced in dark grey.

I like it. It looks like it will stand rather tall when built. The safety stripe pieces add some nice flair, and I love that you were able to get two side by side pilots into it. (If ever anyone feels ambitious enough to try and get the pilots into the head... I seem to recall that the end boss Jokerbot from the Batman 2 video game is actually build able in the brick. That might be an interesting starting point for a real big version of these mechs.)

Would this be a good time to mention that it is actually spelled "Gypsy"?

Thanks! I'm looking at stills from the trailer trying to find where I can add more dashes of color like that. I've also considered making it closer to Microfig scale if I do any other Jaegers. Two could fit in the head of this one pretty easy already.

I'd love to see if anybody actually built the Jokerbot. I'd bet it wouldn't stay upright very well on its own :P

Also, the word is spelled with a 'y', but the name is spelled with an 'i'. See for yourself: http://wpc.556e.edgecastcdn.net/80556E/img.site/PHrBJ77I8087tz_1_m.jpg

I think Travelers Tales actually did build it. Not in the correct colors, because the pieces weren't available for that, but the design is stable and build'able in the brick.

Aw, next best thing then is to try to get the pieces in white or light grey and simply spray-dye them all to the darker grey.

This does look pretty simiar to the one in the trailer, the enormous size necessary would make it difficult to fit two figs in the head. The joints are fine, and maybe a few armor pieces just to cover the gaps a little woud help fit the limb sections closer together without losing any flexibility.
